THIS is the kind of coverage anime gets now, and it is not nearly as bad as it used to be....

http://www.cnn.com/video/data/2.0/video/world/2014/06/18/pkg-ripley-japan-child-porn-laws.cnn.html

Stuff like this is why when ever I tell people I watch anime I have to worry about them immediately assuming I am evil...

(note I put this here as not sure where else to put it if a better forum for this exists please move it there)

At least CNN finally stopped reporting on that missing plane

@zaldar:

Off-Topic is for threads that are not anime or manga related. Since the topic deals with censorship in anime and manga, it goes in the General Discussion.

LOL.

Anyways, topic is whatever. Tom is old enough to where I assume he's not worried that if he tells people that he likes anime he won't be considered cool anymore. He's a professional comic book writer isn't he? He can't be too shy about letting his nerd flag fly proudly considering he makes his income making comic books and being the primary personality on an anime site... an anime site that he and his friends make goofball YouTube videos for.

@sickVisionz:

Yeah, he's a writer of Hybrid Bastards and a screen writer for a cartoon show called Max Steel.

You know, I been watching and reading Anime/Manga for years. I will not hide, I'm a fan of it, if someone think I the devil for liking Anime then so be it. (I know I don't watch/read the stuff they think I watch/read) . Anyway, I have friends and family that understand me (that all I really need), I don't need to justify myself to a stranger who watch CNN.

I'm actually the opposite when I first started out in this site. I kept my love of anime and manga a secret from everyone even my wiki editing hobbies. As time went on, I discover friends in college who loved anime and folks from Church who loved it as well. At AX Expo, I was found out at a hentai booth, searching for Gia (our former Anime Vice staff)'s friend, Yoko, a sale representative of Project H. John was happy to find out that I was a hentai freak.

I'm still ashamed of liking Hentai. I kept that a secret from everyone in Anime Vice until Daniel and Sonata broke me in with the The Hentai Club thread.

@takashichea: im not saying i greet people by talking about anime unless they are my friends, but if anyone asked me i would tell them im a fan of the media. As for my family, all my older brothers watch naruto and are current with the manga, but sadly that is the only anime/manga that they will every get into.

Back then, I would have said I was not interested. These days, I just reply what I like about the media and the shows. I won't mention adult stuff.

@takashichea:

LOL! I know what you mean, I have Anime and Manga I keep secret from my friends and family (like harem and ecchi), but then again they can find out pretty easy. But the biggest secret I keep (that I don't tell anyone, until now) is that I love Musume (like Daily Monster Girls) Anime/Manga. (but I do leave little clues that I like Musume LOL!) I'm ashamed at watching/reading those show. It kind of funny that I like those types of shows, but I can't watch Hentai and I always get mad at Fairy Tail for doing the same thing but lighter LOL! I always find that crazy (I guess you can call me a Musume freak). But you are braver then me, I still don't talk about ecchi or Musume that much

Any who, I know how you feel. When I was a freshmen in high school, people at my high school have stop playing Pokemon. And always saying it for kids, that make me really ashamed for like it and I quit playing it for awhile. But then one of my friends who was older then me was still playing it and wasn't ashamed by it and that give me courage to keep playing (I still playing Pokemon at the age of 27).

But, now I only feel ashamed to family or friends, I learning to accept my crazy hobby one step at a time

@Destinyheroknight:

Don't get me started with harem and ecchi shows. My little sis got me into anime. I avoided those things like a plague when watching anime with my little sister. Ironically, Rosario Vampire was my little sister's most favorite harem show. We watched it together. The second one would be Astarotte's Toy. She got curious why I was laughing so hard on that series.

It's okay, I loved Monster Musume no Iru Nichijou, so does too!

I thought I was too old for Pokemon as well. I passed it my brother and my sister who are younger than me. I quit after Platinum. I got back on it when X and Y came out. I missed the thrills of playing Pokemon.

@waybig1010101:

What I loved about Anime Vice, you get out of your comfort zone and meet folks who have the same hobbies.

I'm grateful for that. I would just have been a closet nerd.

@takashichea: Very interesting story. I actually have many friends and family that watch anime and read manga. I like this place though because I can actually talk more about different series with some people that have great minds here.

@IndridCold:

You're lucky. I only had my little sister back in the past. I met people who haven't seen anime or read manga called it cartoon, treating it as an ordinary thing. Some of them confused it with cartoon porn without realizing there is a vast genre and themes in the medium. That's what Anime Vice is for:

  • To meet people who have the same hobbies
  • To get new folks into anime
  • Clear myths surrounding anime, culture, and the people who loved it.

We accomplished that in the An Entire World of Anime Fans! -- THE VICE PIT project where Tom Pinchuk thank the folks who shared their stories with the community.

@takashichea: Actually, this just happened to me when I entered high school. Back in middle school, there were very few who liked it, but they were mostly gamers. In high school, I met a lot of people who like anime and manga. Surprised me actually.

@takashichea: I also kept my anime fandom a secret until my folks caught on with the manga I was reading. They've been perfectly fine with it ever since I told them about how my post-homeless depression was cured. Thankfully, they hardly know jack about hentai since I never even speak of it IRL with anyone. I actually ended up meeting other anime fans in high school and in college as I went on with it and met very few people who thought it was either all some porno BS or was all some demonic BS (with the latter being the most false). It's actually cool knowing that there were other anime fans besides me.

@takashichea:

oh wow you watched lotts toy with your little sister.....*blink* wow....that I would not have done. Though the show did become a very cute father daughter story the whole set up with her needing uh...sperm....was a bit much for a child. I mean how old was your sister here?

Still the mainstream media seems to think all anime is like the above child kidnap rape and murder. Of course this is ridiculous it is like saying all American movies are saw but until the shows that have this stuff go away the perception will remain and if we want to spread the culture AND keep getting new stuff aka have people keep getting paid for making it we should worry about that. I expect my parents still are a little worried about my anime hobby (and I am 35) and it certainly isn't something i talk about with anyone I want to give me a job.

@zaldar:

Well, I watched that show on Sotyfan16 and maybe Daniel Newton's recommendation back in Summer of 2012. My little sis would be 17 years old at the time. Sorry for dragging your thread off-tangent.

Yeah, mainstream media doesn't have the right view of anime and manga industry.

@Bigheart711:

Yes! You know the pain and the shame I been through. :) It's a good thing they never heard of hentai. For some odd reason, folks who don't know anime confuse with hentai a lot.
