How would you have written Bleach?

With bleach going down the drain and disappointment of about 90% of its fans how would you rewrite this series.

I would have cut some of the parts, and make it a little faster (so it won't drag)

I'll add some more character develpment

I'd be much more interested in something a little less shonen-like. :P
 
When I first started reading Bleach I thought "Oh, cool. A manga about a high school kid who becomes a "shinigami" and has to save ghosts from being eaten".
 
Then I read a little further and found a typical shonen with sub-par characterization. :(
