Pretty much anything set in post modern Japan. 1800 and earlier. Something that has drama, action, and historical accuracy (to some degree). Something like Shiriguri, Ooku, or House of Five Leaves. It would also be nice for it to have unique art and what-not. Must have a good story. XD

Please don't suggest:

  • Naruto
  • Sengoku Basara
  • Inuyasha

Thank you darlings!

The first series that come to mind for me are:

  • Blade of the Immortal
  • Lone Wolf and Cub

I've never read either of these yet (they've been sitting on my plan to read list forever), but I do know that they're very well-regarded and take place in the time period you're looking for.

oneoff the top of my head is Ruroni kenshin. Samurai deeper kyo is also a great read, and even though its not a manga, samurai champloo is worth it as well

Vagabond is obligatory in the list, as well as the others works from Goseki Kojima (lone wolf and cub)
