ICv2 has issued its latest Anime & Manga guide for retailers, and they note that publishers are planning to release 10% fewer manga titles in '09 than what was released in '08. Both indie and chain retailers also saw slowing sales in Q4 '08, so they've started ordering less, of course. And then of course there was that whole TOKYOPOP laying people off again and Broccoli USA closing its doors entirely thing. That's a bit of a hit for the manga world.
And then there's anime, which has been seeing declining sales for some years. ICv2 focuses on the strength of the remaining companies-- FUNimation has those deep Navarre pockets to work with, Bandai Entertainment has Bandai's and some big titles, VIZ has Naruto and Bleach, and Media Blasters does reasonably well with its array of widespread niche titles.
