Some of you hard core wiki contributors may already follow my blog about the state of our wiki articles and images uploads.  If not, you should.  One month ago I wrote about the importance of adding image captions and now I'm going to do it again!   Remember when the task queue was filled to the brim with tasks asking you to caption images?
 


As a result of our wiki task queue initiative, In two weeks we had 6539 captions added to our image galleries.  That's over 500 captions added per day!  Why is this important?  Well captions help tell search engines what an image is about.  Then when people search for "dragon ball bulma fanart" we get listed in the results. Try it, Anime Vice shows up in the first page of Google search results -- for me image 2 and 3 are from Anime Vice. 
 
FInally, check out the graph below.   The blue line is the last 30 days and the green line is the 30 days before that. Both lines represent the amount of people Google image search sent to Anime Vice.  Around January 31 you can see the blue line go up and up and up.  It ends at 3,000 visits per day compared to 2000 per day for the green line.  That's 50% growth.  


I don't know for sure if the new captions added to the images help us grow our google search traffic.  But hey let's see if we can make that blue line go up to 4000 over the next month.  If you want to add some descriptive captions head over to our TASK QUEUE. 
 
 
[UPDATE] Hey guys PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do not just caption the image with the characters name.  That adds no value.  I can do that with code since the image is already attached to the character.  
 
Make the captions descriptive.  Like "Yoko holding a gun" or "Princess flying Voltron".  Not to bum anyone out, but this is the type of captions that don't help:  http://www.animevice.com/hakufu-sonsaku/18-17743/images/

@Newten: Google is a mystery and I've learned never to say traffic is up absolutely because of this, unless you can point to one page that had huge numbers.  In this case its up across all images. 
  
Also, "fanart" is a big search term, so I'd be more lenient with that one even though it may seem a little redundant.

@Newten: Oh we'll know for sure in another month.  We just need more data to be sure.

Thanks to the last queue, I've been doing image cleanups for quite some time now, and will continue to do so.

@EganTheVile1: @adoggz: Yah it takes a week or two before something you do has an effect on the search results at google.

We'll continue to add female characters to the task queue all week.

ALSO, make sure you're captions are descriptive of the image.  Don't just type in the character name, I can do that with code.  Sorry, but these captions are not helpful in identifying what the image is about:  http://www.animevice.com/hakufu-sonsaku/18-17743/images/
