I know robots are science fiction. But in anime, mecha and science fiction are two different things since mecha has it's own genre.

Mecha = Gundam
Science Fiction = Ghost in the Shell

Anyone can correct this?

I agree.

Animes like The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya can be considered Science Fiction, but you wouldn't call it mecha at all.

Mecha is more of a subgenre of Science Fiction, though there are probably more Mecha series than Science Fiction if you were to consider them seperate. Mechs are also listed as a theme, so there is SOME way to distinguish between a mecha anime and non-mecha. It seems strange to people who have been watching anime for a long time, but to people who are just getting started, it's probably easier for them to see it as science fiction rather than mecha.

But most people would be thrown off if they discovered that the anime was full of robots and few science fiction.
