Hey guys, I've noticed the episode pages on the site aren't very consistent and in lots of cases just plain untidy with too many header 3s and such. The wiki guide doesn't offer a template other than "Plot Summary" so that doesn't help much either.

So, I've been messing with some pages and looking at other anime wikis. I came up with a template but I want feedback from you guys. After all, I may be a moderator, but that doesn't mean I should run around changing too many things without talking to everyone else first. Below is my proposed template, I think I've covered pretty much everything, some sections are optional and mostly for shounen series. I've used this template here as an example (below I've left the last section unchanged as it's self-explanatory).

Tell me what you think and if anything should be changed/renamed or added, thanks!

Synopsis

A short (generally a couple of sentences) synopsis goes here. An "official" synopsis is recommended if available, like the ones found on the FUNimation website, Hulu or Crunchyroll. These are usually short and give a brief overview for those who don't want to read the full plot summary to find out what the episode is about. This is one of the few places in the wiki where we allow content from other websites.

via FUNimation (or whoever)

Plot Summary

This is where the bulk of text goes on an episode page. Plot Summaries should be long and detailed, much longer than the synopsis above it. Include links to other wiki pages in this text and feel free to insert some screen captures too, just not too many. Images should float right, as with other pages in the wiki. Grids of images may be used if necessary.

Next Episode Preview

Briefly describe the preview for the next episode here. Usually this should be something like "Character X talks about something while preview clips play in the background." See the example page linked above.

Omake

If the episode features an omake (bonus content) of some sort, write about it here. These often happen after the next episode preview.

Points of Interest

  • Major plot points and such go here.
  • A point of interest might be when a character learns a new ability.
  • Or is seen using an ability or move for the very first time.
  • Or maybe if a couple kiss for the first time, that sort of stuff.

Fights (shounen anime)

  • Character X vs. Character Y (started, continued and/or concluded)

Brief notes on the fight, if it involved more than two characters write about who delivered the final blow, what roles each character played and so on.

Powers & Abilities Used (shounen anime)

Character X

  • Spell
  • Ability
  • Super Power
  • Whatever

Character Y

  • Attack (unnamed) <-- If the move is unnamed in the anime but has a fan term, put unnamed in brackets.

Sub & Dub Differences

Note which scripts the differences are from (i.e: FUNimation's sub and dub scripts)

  • Make sure these are significant changes, for example when dialogue has been removed or added for the dub.
  • Listing minor differences will make this a million miles long.

Manga & Anime Differences

  • Like the sub/dub differences, these should generally be notable or significant in some way.
  • Like extended scenes or changes to outfits or poses.
  • Or maybe they cut entire scenes from the source material, or added new ones in.
  • A row of images below helps. The screen caps should be in the episode's gallery, manga images in the manga gallery on the franchise page.

Miscellaneous

  • Japanese Episode Name: "Yōsei no Shippo" (妖精の尻尾)
  • Story Arc: Macao arc
  • Manga Chapter: 001
  • Opening Theme: "Snow Fairy" by FUNKIST
  • Ending Theme: "Kanpeki Gū no ne" (完璧ぐ〜のね, "Complete Loss for Words") by Watarirouka Hashiri Tai
  • Eyecatches: See all Fairy Tail eyecatches here. The eyecatches for this episode feature Happy:

Under points of interest does there need to be a run down of major plot points? Isn't that what the synopsis and plot summary do? Synopsis should be enough to not need a major plot points section imo.

Looks good to me, but good luck on getting everyone to go back and re-edit all their pages to match it, espcially afte they had to do it a few months back to conform to the last revision. I don't think there will be mass conformity until the actual template of episodes is altered and rather than one massive text field there are a bunch of small ones that are pre-labeled.

@finaldasa: They're kind of for different things. Take a look at the example link I included to see what I mean. It lists stuff that won't appear in the synopsis and it's easier to read through than going through a big plot summary.

@sickVisionz: Thanks. Wait, when did this "revision" happen? As far as I know the only templates to go by are either the wiki guide which just says plot summary or using layouts from other episode pages. I've noticed some trends in episode pages, but lots of them are different. Anyway, I don't expect everyone to immediately go back and edit all the episode pages on the site, but if this is better than what people are using at the moment then it can't hurt to use it for future pages. I'll certainly go back and fix up a few shows.

@Daniel_Newton: Ah ok. Well it certainly looks really good.

I been working on anime wikia sites this month.

Anna, my team, and I pretty much follow this formula. It's like yours.

  • Synopsis ( or Arc name if Anime has story arcs) - short plot (no spoilers)

Synopsis

Summer Breeze - "Kunpū" (薫風)

Hime transfers to a new school to get away from the Onihime rumors; she can't run from her past when her two friends, Bossun and Chiaki, are involved in a tight situation. Will Hime let things begone and accept her Onihime identity?

  • Plot Summary - I list the theme songs while inserting the plot between like

Opening Theme

"Graffiti" by Gackt

At school, the girls gossip about Onihime when Hime pass by. A counselor asks Hime if she hit Arisa, and Hime just left without a definite answer. She left her two friends hanging. On the way home, trouble still follows her. She pulls out her hockey stick to beat some cocky girls. Hime narrates about all the fights she has been

Closing Theme

"HERO" by The Sketchbook

  • Points of Interest
  • Anime and Manga Differences - Include what chapters it covered

Link: Sket Dance ep. 37

A few days ago, I remember you did this section:

Arc & Themes

  • Japanese Episode Name: "Karyū to Saru to Ushi" (火竜と猿と牛)
  • Story Arc: Macao arc
  • Opening Theme: "Snow Fairy" by FUNKIST
  • Ending Theme: "Kanpeki Gū no ne" (完璧ぐ〜のね, "Complete Loss for Words") by Watarirouka Hashiri Tai

I liked what my team did was to incorporate the theme songs in the full plot summary and the Japanese name under synopsis H3 header.

I was debating on the wiki style of the episodes a few months ago. Ethan resolved it with me and my colleagues.

He told me to always begin with Plot Summary in H3. After that, he says it's up to the wiki editor as long as they use H3.

This looks very nice, Dan. Should be more than good enough for a new episode format guide for AV.

I'm just adding in more ideas, but what do you think about Screened's TV episode format? Do you think it's fine as it is, or should there be some tweaks within the format?

@takashichea: I think you mean H2, not H3.

This is one of the things I wanted to change, I think immediately using a H3 under a H2 kind of looks bad. The other reason I wanted to move the Japanese episode name from there is because the wiki does have a separate field for the Japanese names, it's just been broken for a long time so we can't use it right now. Eventually I imagine it will be fixed.

I'm the one who started this trend on episode pages. Technically, if the themes were added where they appear in the episode there would be a little bit of plot summary before the opening theme in most episodes, which would look bad.

Anyway, I think all the names, arcs, themes and stuff should go in the miscellaneous section at the bottom. Eventually that stuff should all get separate sections on built in on episode pages (the episode pages are really bad and need redesigning anyway in my opinion). I think for now that stuff looks better as neat bullet points at the bottom of the page than scattered over the page as headers.

@Bigheart711: Thanks. I Hadn't thought about Screened. I dunno, the episode pages are different over there and episodes of western TV shows don't follow suit as much as anime tends to so it's harder to make templates for them. I guess Points of Interest and Miscellaneous could be used over there too.

Post by takashichea (3,517 posts) See mini bio Level 21

@Daniel_Newton:

I agree that these things should be separated and that the episode page needs reorganization.

When I worked on the Anime Wikia sites, they solved this problem with an infobox or template.

Maybe the engineers can insert this style like how Screened has their episode pages outlined.

@takashichea: Yeah exactly, the pages need fields on the right side to add this stuff too. Until then though, I think it looks better neatly listed in the Miscellaneous section. It kind of serves as an info box until the episode page gets redesigned at some point.

Post by takashichea (3,517 posts) See mini bio Level 21

@Daniel_Newton:

If I take Screened episode page and manipulate it this way, you have your info box that organizes everything.

Is this idea good or not?

@takashichea: Yeah, that's the right sort of idea. I'm sure we can sort something like that out with the engineers at some point when they're not busy.

@takashichea: That would be a great idea. Would make it easier for the work we do on the pages.

Then What Should we Deny?

  • Plagiarism -
  • The big, obvious one, AV is purely for original content - if someone is copy pasting content from somewhere - it doesn't belong here.
Taken from the submission guidelines thread

@Daniel_Newton: I just saw changes to Panty & Stocking episodes, which I believe you may have added, where content was copied directly from another website and posted into the wiki. When did the no copying rule get nullified?

Post by Daniel_Newton (2,381 posts) See mini bio Level 20
Moderator

@sickVisionz: Episode and book pages are the only places copied content is allowed, it's just not outlined in the site FAQ. It's just always been that way. I guess we spoke with staff about this stuff before you were a moderator, so you didn't know. Still, it's outlined in this template now, so problem solved I guess.

Post by sickVisionz (3,779 posts) See mini bio Level 24

@Daniel_Newton: Is it ok for copied content to be anywhere on these pages or just in the short synopsis area?

Post by Daniel_Newton (2,381 posts) See mini bio Level 20
Moderator

@sickVisionz: Just the short synopsis, and it has to be an "official" synopsis from a publisher or distributor like FUNimation or Crunchyroll, so it shouldn't be from wikipedia or any other wiki.

The rest of the page has to be filled in like everything else.
