I won't dress it up. Most of my favs will probably come out of this crop.

Having just completed another furlong in my journey of anime discovery, I reckon the time’s right for some reflection. My thoughts thusly turn to the individuals who have touched my heart throughout this ongoing social experiment of watching and learning. Specifically, my favorite characters and scenes. Ergo, over this week, I'm going to share my top choices from this 2D multiverse with you lunatics. If you agree, let me know. If you disagree, let me know. Let's get a discussion going, and start right here...

 "I have a suspicion, but it&squot;s only a 98% probability."
 "I have a suspicion, but it's only a 98% probability."

L from DEATH NOTE

Here’s a guy you’d just love to grab some tea (and a lot of coffee cake) with and hear his thoughts on, well, basically everything in the world. Whether you saw him as the hero or villain of DEATH NOTE depends on your own moral compass but, for me, he stole every single scene he was in. Just highway robbery. I’ve frequently described him as Japan’s answer to Batman and I find him fascinating for being probably the most realistic depiction I've seen of a master detective in fiction. Here's a man who’s spectacularly cunning and brilliant, yet so lacking in such basic fundamentals of grooming and social skills that you seriously wonder if he’s autistic. And the fact that we only ever get hints about his background makes him all the more tragic and intriguing.

 "This is the Briggs way."
 "This is the Briggs way."

Olivier Armstrong from FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST: BROTHERHOOD

So often, when girls kick ass on screen, their dainty 90 lbs physique and carefree attitudes stretch your suspension of disbelief to the breaking point. Not so with General Armstrong who, for my money, is the most credible lady badass since Sarah Connor. Other characters in FMA may have powers of alchemy or bestial transformation; her’s is an indomitable will. While practically every bigwig in the Amestris government is on the Homunculi's conspiracy, she’ll only put up with their evil nonsense for exactly as long as she needs to before she finds an angle to take the bad guys out. When it comes to the greatest hits," her taking on Sloth or shooting down Ed are only close runners-up behind the part where she buries a corrupt bureaucrat alive in concrete at the mere suggestion that she collude with Father's evil plan. That's what a "Never suffer fools" attitude is all about.

"Don&squot;t believe in me, or yourself. Believe in the me who believes in you!" Or something like that.
"Don't believe in me, or yourself. Believe in the me who believes in you!" Or something like that.

Kamina from GURREN LAGANN

Messages in anime can run a wee ostentatious, so it’s freshing to hear such an insightful, applicable message come from the mouth of a dude with such a limited vocabulary. Indeed, Kamina may be the first “bro” philosopher: a hero with an indefatigable spirit whose message of self-belief really feels like it’s coming from the heart instead of some bag of trite platitudes. Like L, Kamina is a personality big enough to be felt even in his absence, proving to be the wind beneath Team Gurren Lagann’s wings and the nitro in their fuel tanks.

That’s all for today, but keep your eyes peeled for more through the week. I'm making sure that all of my favorites are getting their proper space and attention. Now, let's see some of yours!

I say it is a little too early to lay down your favorites but nice choices so far.

I think now is a great time for him to do it, that way in a year or so he can do another one and we get to see how Tom evolves as a fan.

Three good characters here Tom. My favorite of them is Kamina. L is cool and all but I'm a Light man.

Of all of these my favorite is Kamina, L being second.

L was definitely one for the records but YUS KAMINA FTW!!!!
Shizuo Heiwajima from Durarara - Funny, overpowered yet still relatable.
Spike Speigal from Cowboy Bebop - This guy wrote the book on "cool"
Alucard from Hellsing - Just plain win...its hard these days to make pure evil look soooo good.

Also I loved Gai Daigoji from Nadesico, although he was extremely short lived to only the first three episodes I feel he was the original Kamina of the Giant mecha genre....I also think his english voice "Brett Weaver" SHOULD have been the voice for our beloved Kamina.
Heres a link to a clip of him...he appears in the clip at around 0:25

I'm definitely with you on Olivier.

While watching One Piece, Naruto, and Bleach it is rare to find a decent strong female character. I would fall for a woman like Olivier any day.

@AgentJ: You really should have spoiler tagged that.

If I had to choose 3, a quick list with little thought put into it would be Light, Makoto Itou and Aizen.

Currently my top 5 favorite characters.

  1. Rock from Black Lagoon. As much as I love bad-ass anti-heroes, I also love characters who can project "soft force" through knowing the right things to say and generally being persuasive. He doesn't win all the time, and he's not the kind of manipulative chessmaster that L, Light, and Lelouch are, but I still like him anyway.
  2. Captain Harlock - a list like this needs at least one stoic hero, and who else who else then probably the most popular character Leiji Matsumoto ever created. As with everything else Matsumoto has done, the personality of Harlock has changed from series to series, but one thing has stayed constant - he's a character who maintains a cold, calculating demeanor where other heroes would go hot-blooded, but in turn he also becomes a character who will stare a gigantic alien armada in the eye and not blink.
  3. Char Aznable - Every good list like this needs one villain, so why not the on-again, off-again villain/anti-hero of Gundam's Universal Century (as an aside, why isn't that page part of the wiki villain project. Oh, well, I'll get to that myself later) - who is also the prototype for Lelouch, in more ways than one.
  4. Well, we've got a little sausage fest here, which I'll now break up with Motoko Kusanagi. Ghost in the shell is the first manga I ever read - and I read it before I saw the film (which was why I was disappointed by the absolute lack of Fuchikomas).
  5. To wrap up my First 5, I'm going with Rally Vincent. Gunsmith Cats had a significant influence in me in my high school years. To this day, my dream car is a Shelby Cobra Mustang GT because of that manga.

Some of my favorite characters are Spike and Ed from Cowboy Bebop, Mugen from Samurai Champloo, Dilandau from Escaflowne, Sora from .hack//Sign, and Osaka from Azumanga Daioh.

There are a lot of series' that I like an awful lot, but there aren't a ton of characters that stand out on their own within those series.

After looking over my list I see that I apparently have a lot of affection for crazy people.

L is a great choice. I like Batou from Ghost in the Shell because he is so down to earth, Goku from the Dragonball series because of his pure exuberance, and of course Vincent Law from Ergo Proxy because of his everyman sensibilities in such a strange series of events.

Death Note and Gurren Lagaan are awful; again you show why you know nothing about anime.

Ryoma Batshit Nagare (Shin Getter Version is my favourite character)

Next year, I might spice it up while listing my favorites... in the sauna.

Here's the real question, then... would Kamina be able to outwit Light at anything?

She would boss you around ALL THE TIME, though.
