I’d say one of facet of my all-encompassing life philosophy can best be described through a comparison to Reese’s Pieces. That is, if I like three different things, then why not combine them all into an amalgam that I’ll enjoy three times as much.  Why consume M&M’s, peanut butter and chocolate separately when I can consume them all at once, you know? The same principle applies to the traveling act Kaiju Big Battel.  It combines my interests of pro-wrestling, giant Japanese monsters and performance art into an entertainment juggernaut that fires on no less than three cylinders at once.

Basically, this is a GODZILLA movie acted out right before your eyes. Imagine pro-wrestlers dressed up as characters a lot like Ultraman, Mothra, Rodan, Mechagodzilla and their ilk slugging it out in a chicken-wire cage full of plywood boxes made to look like skyscrapers. They’ve got names like the Sinister Dr. Cube, Kung Fu Chicken Noodle, Pedro Plantain, MC Louden Noxious and they put on a hell of show as they rampage through one faux-cityscape after another. The whole show just draws attention to how profoundly dull contemporary pro-wrestling is, how there are no larger-than-life personalities around anymore. More so, after watching one of these events, you’ll be acutely aware of just how much more savage and exciting LARPing can be (C’mon, the LARPers in this video never even make contact).

I never got to see a show while I was going to school in Boston - - something else always came up - - but I finally got to see a free show at the San Diego Comic Con last year. It wasn’t just a highlight of the convention for me, it was one of the best times I had that whole year. There was even part where the MC was baiting the crowd, asking who amongst the audience would jump into the cage and take on the bad guy. I was seriously just about to answer the clarion call and dive in, getting only maybe an inch away from doing so before they brought in the performer they intended. That’s how into the show I got. Check out their website and find out if they’re ever going to perform near you. I swear, you’ll never see such an explosive collision of Eastern and Western pop culture in your life.
