Sasuke wins. He has Susanoo which makes for a far better defense than Gaara's sand. Then he should make quick work of him with his Amaterasu which can easily burn through Gaara's sand.

@mavfan626: "First 2 seasons"? What are you talking about?

@GIRUGAMESH: Maybe he means the first and second part of the 1st season of Naruto? Like up to the chuunin exams and the Sasuke retrieval arc. Lol I dunno.

Sasuke and any other Genin from the original lose badly to Gaara.

If we're talking up to the end of the Chuunin exams, Sasuke would lose rather badly to Gaara. If we're talking after the timeskip though, then we might be able to have a decent debate on the matter.

@othus12: Gaara's still a formidable foe with his sand, even with the loss of Shukaku. In the Kage Summit arc, he was capable of quickly blocking a high-speed attack from the Raikage and even Sasuke's Amaterasu without the flames going through his sand. Also in the Shinobi World War arc, he was capable of fending off blows from the sword swings of Madara's Susanoo. Gaara would have to be concerned if Sasuke makes use of his Chidori variants. But ever since gaining Magenkyo Sharingan and later EMS, Sasuke's mostly resorted to techniques focused around them like variants of Amaterasu and Susanoo which Gaara's been shown to withstand with his sand. Think after time skip, a battle between the two would be fairly tight depending on which points of the series each one makes use of abilities and knowledge from.

If it's before Shippuden then Gaara absolutely destroys.

However if it's during shippuden at the point where sasuke finishes his training with orochimaru then sasuke wins as Deidara loses to sasuke, while Gaara loses to Deidara.

If we compare the two fights Deidara was pretty much toying with Gaara the entire time (even though he did lose his arm to achieve his victory).

Deidara threw everything he had at Sasuke even using some very unique abilities that not even Gaara went up against and still lost (even blowing himself up in a humongous explosion to try and beat him).

So Sasuke wins imo.

@jazmac : Deidara beating Gaara had more to do with the former setting up a scenario to pull it off as Gaara's overwhelming sand attacks forced the Akatsuki member on the defensive and had driven Deidara in exhausting nearly his entire supply of clay. If not for exploiting Gaara's concern for the well-being of the Sand Village, Deidara would very likely have lost in the fight with Gaara. Gaara's sand jutsu provides him with more flexible options in engaging his foes from various ranges and using them for both offense and defense. On the other hand, Deidara is mostly a ranged combat specialist with his clay jutsu who tries to avoid close quarters combat where possible since his options would be very limited if a foe managed to close in on him. Deidara was fortunate he had the perfect scenario before him to allow him to beat Gaara.

@Dream: Yes but Deidara was at a big disadvantage in that he wasn't allowed to kill Gaara, quite a setback for an explosions specialist. Deidara only ever used C3 as a distraction, before that all he was using was C1. Deidara did resort to attacking the sand in order to win, but he didn't go close to showing off everything he had in that fight.

@GIRUGAMESH: Deidara's stronger clay attacks take more time to prepare compared to his C1 attacks and require him to put distance between him and his foe if he wishes to use them. Capturing or killing, Gaara's sand attacks would still be a problem for Deidara to deal with, even while in flight via clay bird.

@Dream: Of course they would still be a problem, but based on what he's shown and how he handled Gaara's attacks during their fight I think he could easily pull off a C2 dragon/C4 garuda.
