The age-old debate; subbed anime vs. dubbed anime! What's your preference?

Personally I mostly watch subbed anime because:

  1. Japanese sounds awesome
  2. It's the most "real" or "true" experience (next to learning to actually speak/understand Japanese)
  3. Lots of dubs are bad for one reason or another (voice acting, script, etc.)

Still, there are a few dubs I think are fantastic. The one I always mention is Dragon Ball Z Kai. Some people don't like it because some of the voices aren't the ones they remember from the older Z dubs, but the quality of voice acting is magnitudes higher, the script is worlds better and I personally find the new voices fine. Frieza is much more menacing.

I would only watch the dubbed version of Tenchi because I love the voices of the cast. Especially Ryoko. It all depends on the voices for me, if I feel they're right. Sometimes it's different. For instance, I watch the dubbed version of Dragon Ball Z, I like a lot of the voice actors, but I watch some episodes in Japanese because the voices for them episodes are better. The Bojack film I watch in Japanese because Gohan's voice in it at the end is marvellous!

So I'm not too bothered.

Only subbed here. Most dubs I watch have lazy/terrible voice acting. The only dub I really enjoyed where movies 1-3 of DBZ. Peter Kelamis was a really good early Goku.

I mostly watch subbed anime because I get a more "real" experience within watching it, and if I wind up enjoying it, I'll likely check out the dubbed version of said series. There are times when I want to check out the dubbed version of a series because I heard that it sounded real good by a lot of people..

I find myself watching roughly 95% of my anime subbed and occasionally 5% of it dubbed (when a dubbed version is available). I pass on the dubbed versions, however, mainly because the voices used in the dub are either terrible (see a episode of KanoKon dubbed and see what I mean o_O) or they just don't match the character.

I watch mostly subs. While I have enjoyed some dubs in the past, most of the time I find them to be weird. Mostly because I feel like the voices don't really match. Plus I do get the feeling a lot of the times that the English actors are overplaying their parts.

@Destinyheroknight: Hey now there is a small percentage:P 
But Hentai still has the worst dubbing I have ever heard. Bible Black still makes me cringe and it isn't because of the scenes.

I can understand why they have bad dubs, if I was a voice actor who have to do porn, I would phone it in LOL!

It can't be as bad as Garzey's Wing :)

I watch most of my anime subbed for the following reasons...

  • When I first got into anime, basically anything I saw dubbed that wasn't good enough to be on TV didn't get a quality dub so it turned me off
  • Even now, most dub voice acting just isn't as good as US cartoons as I remember them and when I occasionally watch them today. Maybe not fair since a US cartoon by a major network can spend a lot more for this stuff, but it's the only base of comparison I have
  • I got into foreign movies during college and got over any issues I ever had with not watching stuff in its native language
  • New anime comes out subbed often years before it's available dubbed so the subbed voices are what I get accustomed to and prefer
  • There are some really bizarre choices that seem to get made for dubs voices that can cast characters in a different light or just don't match
  • Some dub writing meticulously tries to match up lip movements so even if the VA is good and the writing was ok, words are changed and phrasing is altered... which is totally pointless when you consider that most JP voices aren't even as meticulously synced up to the animation as these foreign adaptations try to be

Dubbed hentai is the best. The bad voice acting adds an extra layer of cheese and comedy to stuff that's already pretty poor quality.
