Welcome to the Kokoro Connect anime discussion.

For those who are new to the series. Here's a plot synopsis.

The love and teen pentagonal comedy follows the strange phenomena at the Yamahoshi Academy's Culture Club, starting with the five male and female club members switching bodies with each other.

By Anime News Network

In short, it's like Freaky Friday as most people nickname this show.

I'm going to bump this. I know for sure that some of you folks out there love Kokoro Connect and the whole Freaky Friday and gender swapping thing.

Don't be shy. Oh, don't let it be like Rock Lee's thread. Sometimes, I just add images to my old post.

I haven't tried the show, so I can't contribute yet.

@takashichea: I suprised that no one has commented one this discussion thread. Well, I guess I'll be the first with some info on the show.

So far I have only finished episode one and is pretty decent. Anyway here are some of my thoughts.

Characters

The show was created by the same guy who created K-ON! and because of that I was coming to the show with the expectation that the characters were going to be 9th graders acting like nine year olds. Luckily that was not the case and I felt they acted their age for the most part. Then again, that is still not saying much since they are like 13 years old. The characters are a couple of misfits who are in a club because they either don't know which club to join or they were rejected from the other clubs. The club is kind of similar to K-ON!'s club but they have boys in it. So far the characters are pretty much defined by their one trait, but it is still early in the season and hopefully they develop them well. Otherwise I'm going to wonder if Inaba has a rock in shoe the hole time and isn't willing to get it out.

Pros

  • Most of the jokes were funny.
  • When one of the boys gets switched to a girl's body, and he gropes her body. I was disturbed by that scene (good thing I was not in a public place.), but I felt that was handled realistically. It is too bad they destroy that realism by adding a really unrealistic scene following that one.
  • The episode was able to effectively convey the main character's attribute(s).
  • There was one part where two of the girls ask Taichi which one he would like to see naked. I thought he handled that situation quite well. If I was in that situation, things would have ended up more awkward.

Cons

  • That scene after the self grope scene was just crazy. So, after the male character gropes himself in his female body, the stock lesbian character comes in and some dialogue that sounded like it came from a bad porn makes an appearance. It kind of sounded like this:
Lesbian stock character: I see you're touching yourself.
Aoki: No, I'm not!
Lesbian Stock Character: You know, it is even better when you have someone else do it. Let me demonstrate.

Then Lori comes in and chases away the Lesbian Stock Character by molesting her.

After thinking about my comments, I think I may have been too harsh or sounded like I hated the anime. I rather enjoyed this one and found myself laughing alot.

@Acura_Max:

Thanks for commenting. I'll contribute once I get to watch the first two episodes.

Most guys can't resist the urge/ curiosity. I do wonder how they will manage to fool their parents, loved ones, and others who really know them. Body language is a big thing since both men and women have different gestures such as closing and opening legs when sitting down.

@takashichea: You definitely brought up a good point. (Spolier Alert) In the second episode, even though the characters know that they are in different bodies, all of them except Inaba go to the wrong bathroom. It is definitely hard to to change habits you have been doing for years. For characters who don't spend alot of time with their family like Iori this probably won't be a problem, but Yui looks like she will have the most trouble with this due to having a sister and spending more time with other friends.

The second episode also brought another very interesting point. There is one part where Iori makes a comment about identity. Usually when a story brings in a question about philosophy, it ends up being pretentious or it just sounds stupid ( ex. "Is giving cpr considered a kiss"). For this anime, I thought it was not only appropriate, but it made alot of sense. If the characters keep changing their bodies, will they lose their identity?

What did you think about that Heartseed guy?

thanks for lettin me know about this . well, I wouldn't really push the bodyswapping as the focal point of the show, it's just the premise for the first arc. I really enjoy this show, haven't felt like this about a show since I watched Gosick last year. Its rather drama heavy, but It works well with the flow of the story. Also, Himeko <3

though I will say although Fujishima starts as a stock lesbian character, she gets a lot more in depth later on, and is effectively the sixth main character aside from heartseed.

@Halberdierv2: I can tell that you love this show. That is a nice Kokoro wallpaper you have there. Thanks for joining us in the discussion. Also, I'm glad to hear that Fujishima gets more developed.

@Acura_Max: thanks! also, the characters get a whole lot more developed as the show goes on, and personally, I feel that heartseed may say he's doing this for his amusement, but he seems to be helping the group to develop into genuine people, so maybe he isn't as evil as he first seems.

@Halberdierv2: I was actually thinking the same thing when I thought about Heartseed. His name kind of spells out what kind of character he is. On a side note, when Heartseed appears, he is kind of like the director in anime form. Like if the director/writer jumped into the anime and decided to teach these teens about life.

Edit: Remember how I said Taichi had a witty retort in episode one? Well, in episode two he just lost all his awesome points. After he molests Iori and accidently gives Fujishima the wrong impression, he asks Iori: "What's wrong?" Please refer to this image for appropriate response.

Post by Halberdierv2 (1,295 posts) See mini bio Level 17

@Acura_Max: granted, I think Taichi was just being any normal teenage boy being exposed to boobies. I don't think he realized he was Iori at that moment (though I could be wrong). and besides, Iori rips at him for doing so. but this whole thing sorts itself out in ep 3.

@Halberdierv2: Good thing she does. Anyway I have to watch episode 3. I'll get back to you after I'm done.

@Halberdierv2: Just finished episode 3; I have to say, each episode gets better than the last. From what I hear episode six is the one that really grabs you. Here are some quick thoughts on the episode.

Good

  • Wow, things got really dark when the episode got to Yui's background. That one came out of left field. In fact, if it weren't for this, I would have asked why Heartseed was choosing these people.
  • Great chemistry between the characters. It was definitely fun seeing the characters interact with each other.
  • More shipping between the characters.
  • The jokes were funny as always. Inaba's revenge against Taichi was particularly funny. Good thing I was not in public; my laughter would have made me look weirder than I already am.

Bad

  • Nothing I can think of. Although, I can help but think that Yui got over her trauma a little too quickly. Although I have a feeling they will elaborate on this plot line later. Don't confirm or deny this; I think the person who tried to rape her was a former boyfriend. Somewhere along the line, he will show up.

bad news, schoolwork is getting heavy, so I'm not going to be able to write up the episode summaries like I did any more. I'm still going to watch the show, so I'm not out of the loop of things, and when Christmas break reaches, I'll see about filling in the remaining episodes.

@Halberdierv2:

Don't worry about it. I'm in the situation, too.

Edit:

Thank you and for keeping this discussion thread alive.

@Halberdierv2: At least you have your priorities straight. It was fun discussing stuff with you. If you don't mind I could fill out those episode summaries for you. It shouldn't take long for me to catch up.

Post by Halberdierv2 (1,295 posts) See mini bio Level 17

@Acura_Max: sure, go ahead. I was gonna write just a paragraph summary for the episodes a la my Ranma quickies, but I'll be glad for the help. #5, 10-12 need to be filled. i've done everything else. you should also let know that you're taking over.
