In order to compensate for the damage to the hangar they caused, Chamber is put to work hauling around heavy cargo, but that leaves Ledo on the sidelines with nothing to do. Amy takes him around the fleet and introduces Ledo to the knowledgeable Dr. Oldham as well as her sickly but wise younger brother, Bebel.
After helping the Gargantia defeat the pirates, Ledo finds adjusting to life aboard the vessel to be very difficult. Now, living on the boat, Ledo is given quarters and must work to pay off the damage he had done to the hanger. With the help of Chamber, he assists the crew in moving cargo from ship to ship. After some mishaps with the cargo, Ledo is forced to switch control of Chamber to the crew members in the name of efficiency.
While Ledo is standing by, he shoots lasers into his Hideauez nail while he watches the children. He wonders why the people on the ship are so unorganized and care free. When Amy stops by, she asks why Ledo is carving holes into the nail. Ledo tells her that he does not know and gives her the nail as a gift.
Amy then asks Ledo to take a walk with her. As they walk, she begins to tell Ledo about her brother and his frail condition. Ledo becomes confused because his society does not have families and those who cannot fight are put down. Ledo then asks Amy if there is anyone who can provide him with information and she suggests that he should see Dr. Oldham.
When they enter Dr.Oldham's office, Amy leaves Ledo to finish her deliveries. Alone with Dr.Oldham, Ledo asks the doctor if he has any information that may allow him to go back into space. However, Dr. Oldham only has old texts that would not help Ledo; Ledo then decides to ask why fleet does inefficient things such as caring for the weak. Dr. Oldham laughs and tells Ledo that such thinking is narrow; he then recommends that Ledo should Amy's brother, Bevel.
When Ledo does talk to Bevel, he poses the same question to him. Bevel tells him that what Ledo sees as inefficient is simply how the people on Gargantia is how they live. Then bevel asks Ledo what he would do if the Galactic Alliance defeats the Hideeauez. Ledo replies that he would be on stand by when that happens, Bevel concludes that standing by is the same as continuing to live.
As Ledo broods about his role on the Gargantia, Bellows tells him to stop thinking like a soldier and then rains starts to pour. After collecting the rain, Amy invites Ledo to dry off at her home. Bevel then explains that his existence is nessary because his sister needs him and he needs her. He then takes the nail and begins playing it like a flute. Hearing the sound, Ledo recalls a memory where a person like him shows him a nail similar to the one he has and is then ejected out a chute. At that thought Ledo begins to cry. Later, Chamber assures that Ledo will rejoin the fleet after Ledo decides that he must learn more about his new world.
