That white strip in the center, there? That's what I'm talking about.
That white strip in the center, there? That's what I'm talking about.

Ah… the corpus collosum. That mysterious bridge between the left and right hemispheres of the brain that has captured the imagination of so many writers of sci-fi and fantasy. The plot of Philip K. Dick’s novel, A SCANNER DARKLY, concerned an undercover narc whose corpus collosum was eroded by a drug.  The fissure led to his right and left brains becoming independent enough to develop their own separate consciousnesses. This fourth episode of FLCL never actually comes out and says that Naota’s corpus collosum has been severed, but that's clearly what is being referred. It's a brilliant idea - - seriously, I wish I'd thought of, myself - - to have a black hole arising in that gap and the hole subsequently serving as a portal through which all these bio-mecahnoids have sprouted into Naota's head.

Considering that I already noted the Freudian subtext lurking within the previous episodes, it was only natural that the notorious Oedipus complex would eventually work its way into this show.  Actually, considering how baseball factors so heavily into this episode, I’m kind of surprised that there were no jokes about Naota getting to second base with all the girls coming on to him so aggressively throughout this series.  C'mon... just listen to the way Haruko talks about how the kid needs to "wield his baseball" and tell me there's no subtext there.

I must note, as well, that we’re going to have to ad sub-branch to the larger “What the F@#$ Did I Just Watch?!” umbrella.  Namely, it should be called, “What the F@#$ Are You Watching!?”, because that’s exactly what my roommate asked as he walked past me while I was watching this episode. The scene in question was when the android duplicate of Naota’s dad (or, at least, that was I understood him to be) was being used by Haruko as a giant electric razor. Clever, I’ll admit, given that the guy’s chin hairs are probably sharper than the blades of my Mach 5, but I can’t help wondering if it was that efficient given the amount of dead weight (that is, the whole rest of the guy’s body) that’s towed around during the shaving process.

I’m so glad that this anime is putting my mind on such bizarre logic tracks. I hope the madness only escalates in these two remaining episodes.

Hmmm... when watching FLCL, one should just remember words of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson:

"Buy the ticket, take the ride."

It also wouldn't hurt to take some mescaline and start swatting at imaginary bats.

FLCL does not follow any logic. Period.

@constanzadellarosa: Dream logic stills counts as logic.
