 You know, normally I wouldn't condone thievery, but if it gets this girl out enough that she gets some much-needed color, I'm all for it.

I can’t help feeling some sense of irony over the announcement that the English name for FINAL FANTASY XIV’s “Dark Elves” is “Duskwight Elezen.” Yeah yeah.  I know that the previous name for this race was likely an unofficial fan translation from the Japanese website, but still… that name sounds a lot more German than English.  Either way, the American website for the next FF game has the official description of this race up and it breaks down a little something like this…

The Duskwight Elezen have spent centuries in the peace and seclusion of Eorzea's caves and caverns...Many of the reclusive Duskwight resort to robbery and pillaging to survive, earning them the scorn of their woodland relatives.

What? Am I REALLY supposed to be believed that caves and caverns are so lacking in plentiful natural resources that this proud, majestic race must stoop to something as base as theft? I suppose that’s the row every goth has to tow, right? You want to spend all your time in the dark, the dank and the gloom but, sooner or later, you’ve got to come out and brave the burning sunlight to get something good to eat, huh?

Anyway, check out the official site for the game, view the Duskwight Elezen description on your own and come up with some snarky comments that best suit your point of view. And big ups to Kotaku for the head's up.

@Tom_Pinchuk:  Since you said in the story that you copied the news from another site, then it would depend on your point of view of who is the bigger fool give the situation.The fool who was fooled in the first place, or the fool that followed the fool. Ether way, it wouldn't be the first time some one got tricked by an April fools joke and i doubt it would be the last.

 “Duskwight Elezen" ?

Sounds like someone who should be going at it with Phoenix Wright or Travis Trouchdown.

Sounds about on par for that world's naming conventions.  Not that I necessarily like them, but it doesn't seem that out of the ordinary.  Anytime I see dark elves/pale people who live in caves, it makes me want to play Exile/Avernum.

Hmmm...Avernum 6 i haven't played yet.

I'm pretty sure everyone's just going to call them "elves", no?  Although "DUSKWIGHT" has a certain deliciousness to it.  I imagine a chocolate-covered treat... for some reason.

I like the translations of weird fantastical names for XIII and XII, but this is... urrkk.

@gia:
As Addfyn said it sounds about right, FFXI the elves were called the Elvaan. Keeping in mind that this is in a differerent world (or at least a different version of a previous) like every numbered Final Fantasy (with the exclusion of FFX-2) changing up the name a bit makes sense.

In fact if you look at the site they changed the names of all the races, which given that the world isn't in Vana'diel it makes sense that the names of the different races in Hydaelyn that are similar but not the same as those in Vana'diel have different names.
