As the title says...a reader pointed me to the Amazon.com listing for Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children on Blu-Ray, with the same features as the Japanese release-- including the "Legacy of FINAL FANTASY VII" featurette, and the recently-announced OVA episode about Denzel. Also, a “sneak peek” at Final Fantasy XIII, though I'm not sure if that's a trailer or the playable demo that's coming with the Japanese version. Here's hoping for the demo.

The BD is due out in North America on June 2 for $38.96 MSRP (Amazon's is on sale, natch, for $27.49)-- a pretty reasonable price, if you ask me.

Do, so, completely want. I am such a sucker for this stuff.

I am so sick and tired of FF7 already...I mean, how many times now has Advent Children been re-released in the US alone!? I mean, it's not that old!

Will get on Amazon only if it comes with the FFXIII demo.

Already have this (recycled) movie on DVD. Even in HD, I'm not so sure if I want it for the movie itself anymore.

The film is very pretty and will probably look great on anyone's HD/BD setup. But I'm not convinced that the additional footage (thirty minutes?) will repair Advent Children's rather broken storytelling.

When I watched Advent Children a couple of years ago, it was a bit annoying watching several "music video cum tech demos" be strung together with a rather limping story. The movie just felt rushed and unpolished. Things were happening just to get Cloud and company to next "oarsum fight scene".

Of course, some could argue that popcorn action flicks don't need to worry about explaining its reasoning or its Macguffins because the audience just wants to watch some well-choreographed badassery. And y'know what? I agree. I like watching a good ass-kicking too, even though I roll my eyes and chuckle at an action movie's attempt to squeeze in "heartfelt storytelling".

But Advent Children felt different than the usual popcorn action flick. Square's production team was very much influenced by those very same action flicks (the good), but it seemed like they wanted the storytelling to be taken very seriously (the bad). I'm not sure if that makes sense to anyone reading this. The Geostigma threat never felt very threatening. Neither did the obvious "end-boss" arrival of Sephiroth.

Don't get it twisted though, some of those action set-pieces were VERY entertaining. But that's all they seemed to me: pieces. I didn't care if Cloud won or lost those battles. I didn't feel emotionally involved in the rest of the cast either; which is why I felt like I was watching an entertaining Black Mages music video and Square tech demo.
