As I’ve let people know, my biggest exposure to the FINAL FANTASY saga came with game #8. The one with Squall and Rinoa and SEED and those eye-catching cinematics they used for the TV commercials. Alas, I was never able to finish the game because I got to a dead end and found out it was because I didn’t summon some obscure spirit earlier on. I didn’t really want to invest another 40 hours into the thing, so that was the end of that. I mention that because I’ll always think of FFIX as Square’s return to cartooniness for the series, and I mention that game because #9’s making a comeback.
Siliconera’s let us know that Square Enix’s producer, Shinji Hashimoto, let it slip on Twitter that FFIX is now finished for a digital re-release. It’ll be available in the Japanese PlayStation store real soon, depending on how the test play goes. There are supposed to be more announcements throughout this week and I don’t imagine an American release is far behind, either.
What I’m more curious about is how FINAL FANTASY fans rank game #9. I know that game #7 is basically the pinnacle… the most loved, the most respected, the most revisited. But what about this one? Is it worth it to bring this back, even digitally?
