They're so cute when they're serious.

As I’ve let people know, my biggest exposure to the FINAL FANTASY saga came with game #8. The one with Squall and Rinoa and SEED and those eye-catching cinematics they used for the TV commercials. Alas, I was never able to finish the game because I got to a dead end and found out it was because I didn’t summon some obscure spirit earlier on. I didn’t really want to invest another 40 hours into the thing, so that was the end of that. I mention that because I’ll always think of FFIX as Square’s return to cartooniness for the series, and I mention that game because #9’s making a comeback.

Siliconera’s let us know that Square Enix’s producer, Shinji Hashimoto, let it slip on Twitter that FFIX is now finished for a digital re-release. It’ll be available in the Japanese PlayStation store real soon, depending on how the test play goes. There are supposed to be more announcements throughout this week and I don’t imagine an American release is far behind, either.

What I’m more curious about is how FINAL FANTASY fans rank game #9. I know that game #7 is basically the pinnacle… the most loved, the most respected, the most revisited. But what about this one? Is it worth it to bring this back, even digitally?

From what I've seen it's split down the middle. Fans either love the return to the series roots or hate the abandonment of the sci-fi theme that the last few games had. I haven't played 9 yet but i would definitely pick it up maybe 7 and 8 too because my PS3 won't play my disc copies for some reason. :(

I really liked Final Fantasy IX because the main character was a nice guy unlike Cloud and Squall. Every moment I spent playing 8 I wanted to hurt Squall. Will definitely get this when (I say when because they already released 7 and 8 as a download so this will mostly likely get released too) it gets released on the US store.

9 is my absolute favorite. Vivi ftw

I enjoyed IX but it didn't stick with me the way VII did (in a positive way) or VIII did (in a not-so-positive way). It was a return/homage in many ways and was really cute, but I didn't think of it as a particularly stand-out.

Then again I'd rather they made more stuff like IX than like XII-- or even XIII, which I had more fun with the characters of than XII at least, but whose gameplay style eventually lost my interest. :/

I absolutely loved 9.  The characters in 9 still seem to be the most colorful and well-developed out of all the other Final Fantasy games.  If this game gets released in the US, I am definitely going to pick it up.  I miss playing with Zidane and Vivi and Freya and all the rest of the characters!  Yes, even Quina. XD;;

9 is my personal favorite of the PS1 trio. That said though I probably would not buy it again since i've honestly played through the entire thing 5 or 6 times back in the day.

IX is better than VII but not as good as VIII. Also add most overated to VII as well Tom. My personal top three are IV, VI and VIII.

Out of the 3 PS1 FF's 9 was on the bottom of my list. I liked a lot but not as much as 7 or 8.

FFIX was not my favorite Final Fantasy game, but I still really liked it.  Very laid back style and mostly comical.  It was a nice change of pace for the series.  I definitely like it better than FFXII and FFXIII.  I miss the old turn based RPG's of the FF franchise, instead of the auto-combat of the secondary characters.  I dont hate the new combat systems, it just makes it too easy to play, especially FFXIII.

IX Better than VII? Nooooo. I have nothing bad to say about FF IX, but it did catch me off guard, like it did to so many others, when it was first revealed. Then I bought it and couldn't put it down. I had a HORRIBLE experience when my save game got wiped. I'm so glad we don't live in memory card days anymore.

IX was way better than VII. VII is a overrated game that created unnecessary fanboys, and IX is so underrated.

"Unnecessary fanboys?" :) What's that? Many of those who liked IX started with VII. Isn't that fanbase very necessary, especially if you were a fan of IX?

From what I've seen and heard, FFIX has a reputation for being looked down upon in the wake of fan favorites VII and VIII, but in reality it is still fairly well liked, though oft overlooked. For what it's worth, FFIX was the first Final Fantasy game that I had the opportunity to experience on a current-generation console, and I had a ton of fun being the designated walkthrough reader whenever I went over to my friend's house after school. I recently bought a used copy of it at a local resale store, and I'll probably pick this version up too. It's just too convenient to not have waiting on my hard drive, rather than digging out discs.

Of course it's worth bringing FFIX back, not even a question. In my opinion best final fantasy games were the PS1 ones.

Well personally I think this is one of the lesser games in the series.  I would put it over 13 or even 12 (maybe) but there are plenty of better RPG's out there.  Why don't I like it?  Forgettable characters save 1-3 of them, a very boring story, Vegeta is the final boss, the main character was not likeable in the least he was basically a Locke wannabe that was then crossbred with Goku and trained to  be as inane and annoying as humanly possible, did I mention the game is completely forgettable in just about every way?

That said who said 8 was a fan favorite?  It was one of the worst FF's ever made and most polls I see about ranking the various games almost always put it low on the list.  The two that are consistently favorites are FF VI and obviously FF VII.

I'll never understand why other FF fans didn't like this game. It has to be one of if not my favorite game in the series. There's just so much heart, and it's just plain fun to play and explore. I will gladly throw down $9.99 for a digital copy!
