 Dare I say, it's all Greek to me.
 Dare I say, it's all Greek to me.

Surely, this is a new level of nerdy. According to Kotaku, this individual, Hacker Abw, has put out a patch translating all but a few of the original FINAL FANTASY (the one for the NES) into the Western world’s favorite root language - - Latin.  Not only has he already done this for THE LEGEND OF ZELDA, but he’s also doing it for FINAL FANTASY VI.  In fact, translating the first game was just a quick task he wanted to whip while taking a break from the later. That's what you call operating on another level. For sure.

As someone who went through four years of Latin in high school, I can’t decide if I admire this guy’s efforts. Latin is an exceptionally hard language to learn and I don’t believe it’s actually even spoken anywhere outside of Vatican City. I was so bad at the language, I had to put triple the usual amount of effort into Roman culture and mythology to make up for how my language tests and assignments were bringing my grade down. Really, if you had a gun to my head and told me I had to conjugate a verb or you’d blow my brains out… I’d have a big hole in my skull, right now. Even looking at these screenshots today, I can pick up on only just a few words that fit the context.

But I digress. I’ll step aside from the lectern and put the question to you, oh romance-derived Anime Vice community. Would this patch actually add something to your FINAL FANTASY experience or does this only be appeal to the narrowest of niches?

I sucked at Latin when I took it too -- though, as the course promised, it did help me a ton with my pretty horrible English skills. Though I don't think I can remember enough to actually approach a fully Latin version of any type of game [barring arcade games... >_>;;]

As someone who took 2 years of latin in highschool and can't remember a single thing besides puela, this does absolutely nothing for me.

However I do applaud the effort. Atleast now we can take a time machine to the renaissance with a laptop and show Leonardo Divinci what final fantasy is! Maybe then he'll figure out a logical way to explain the final boss in that game.

@thwak:
yeah, I applaud the effort as well, but to what end? Why gain is there to translating this game into a language that no one speaks, well, at least exclusively. I assume the game is readily available in the other romance languages.
