Just recently I got Final Fantasy XIII, and playing it has made me think about the past games in the series and how they relate to my view on gaming today.
being born in the early 90's my first view of the Final Fantasy games was like most other people FFVII, which I hated i can never really explain why but i guess it has something to do with my friend loving it and building it up to the pinnacle of gaming history only for it be fine. In retrospect i think my views on FFVII are filtered through a pair of the black tinted glasses of hatred.
After taking a break from the series I finally gave it another try with FFX, which to date is my favorite Japanese RPG of all time. Now i know there are some things in the game that are really retarded, Tidus, Wakka, Tidus, Blitzball and Tidus come to mind, and the voice acting is god awful at times, and the whole game suffers from the need to over-explain everything, and Rikku is only 15 yet is the most sexualised thing in the game (if you ignore Lulu's boobs). But on a whole i really like the flow of the game, the fact that it is not until around the last 30 percent of the game until it opens up location wise, and it is a great idea, you know almost everywhere in the game before it throws you to the wolves.
Then comes FFXII, in theory i should love FFXII the game got rid of the crappy love stories, the main character is blatantly not the main character, and there is Balthier (AKA the leading man), however when it came to gameplay i hated FFXII so much, from the battle system to the constant need to do side quests. needless to say i didn't finish FFXII in fact i got to a point where I'm walking across stupid spires in a desert when i said enough.
Since the release of FFXII i have gone and played the FFII remake and FFIX both of which were fine, FFIX is quite a good game and really should not get the grief that it gets, but then i could see why people whoud dislike it after playing VII and VIII.

Hmm, but what do you think of Final Fantasy XIII? I think it has a lot more in common with with X than XII.

But I'll agree with you, I was not a XII supporter. I felt so unmotivated and unrewarded for any action that I took.

I like Snow a lot actually, he's one of my favourites.  I can sorta relate to his optimistic idealism, plus his beard is just so sexy.

I feel old, in that I started Final Fantasy with FF1, but I can relate to some of what you said.  I sort of agree with FFXII in that while I think it succeeds wonderfully as a dungeon crawler, it fails as a JRPG.  There's just so much disconnect in the game, I feel like I am going from one dungeon to the next for no real reason.  Combine that with a cast of characters with zero purpose (Ashe is the only character actually relevant to the story) and it just felt a bit...disjointed.  Every FF has done something different though, even FF2 did (doing away with the level system of typical RPGs) so I don't begrudge 12 that.  It just wasn't really my thing.

I have to disagree that IX is a good game, Zidane can die in a fire and be tormented for a hundred years, and it will still not relieve the hatred I have for him (Making it my least favourite FF ever made, by a long shot).

Ha "This shit just got real." You know, Vanille and snow have grown on me. Particularly chapter 8 for Vanille, but I did note how much abuse Snow takes, and comes off feeling like "that dude who is obsessed with matching the hero trope" Though, I do hate how everyone really treats it like everything is his fault. I mean, I guess we could find out that he's secretly to blame... for like, everything, but I severely doubt that.

@John_Martone: I always liked Vanille, it was just her english VA that was throwing folks off (and her eidolon's ultimate ability which makes her...well, yeah).   I love Snow though, he is always there to pull people out of their pessimistic slumps with his optimism and certainty, it's a bit refreshing.  Plus he is such a nice guy/sweet to Serah.

@Addfwyn: Oh, I'm team Snow right now. He's so overly supportive that its hard (imo) to not like him. I'm just about done with Chapter 10, and I'm even cool with Hope more than I was before. Everyone's just kinda chill now. Even if the plot is feeling more and more like FFX

I'm just about to start Chapter 11 and well I still dislike Snow, Vanille is less annoying, Sahz I couldn't care less about, but Hope Fang and Lightning are great.
The only battles I've died in are the Goddamned eidolon battles.
Story wise I like it but i still wish it would explain a bit more, but I guess that's what the not-Codex is for.
Oh and the enemies in chapter 10 are all of the worse enemies in one area.
