 Nerd Rage!
 Nerd Rage!
Famitsu is officially dead to me. I'm sorry we've been overwhelming everyone with Final Fantasy XIII tidbits, but I couldn't not post this.

Famitsu, the once holy grail of difficult game scoring... has been so excitedly over eager with their "perfect" scores of late. Where once the sheer news of a perfect score would open the ground from under us, this is not the case anymore. The 23 year old publication has published 13 "perfect" scores... which doesn't sound too unreasonable, until you realize that there have been 4 "perfect" games this year alone. 7 of the 13 games have been 2008-2009 alone... YET FINAL FANTASY IS UNDESERVING?!?!

Oh man, I want to be understanding, but I get such nerd outrage looking at things like this.

1. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (1998)
2. Soulcalibur (1999)
3. Vagrant Story (2000)
4. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (2003)
5. Nintendogs (2005)
6. Final Fantasy XII (2006)
7. Super Mash Bros. Brawl (2008)
8. Metal Gear Solid 4 (2008)
9. 428: Fusasareta Shibuya de (2008)
10. Dragon Quest IX (2009)
11. Monster Hunter 3 (2009)
12. Bayonetta (2009)
13. New Super Mario Brothers Wii (2009)

Either gaming is entering a New Renaissance, that games were just simply terrible for the last two decades, or everyone has forgot what the definition of perfection means.

These games are all fun and all, but many don't strike me as the pinnacles of gaming that will be remembered forever. Sooooo if we are going to water down the value of a perfect score with the likes of Old Super Mario Brothers Made New and Generic Hunter 3 (to say the least) why are we not watering it down with Final Fantasy's mark!

P.S. Final Fantasy 12 didn't deserve full marks either.

EDIT: Forgot to meantion. Final Fantasy got a 39/40

So, wait, what score DID Final Fantasy XIII get out of 5? All I can see is that one reviewer gave it only a 9/10. Does that automatically drop it down to a 4/5?

Ii just cant get existed for FFXIII, it just looks like generic FF with a bland cliche story and uninteresting character and world designs. The combat looks interesting because it reminds me of FFX which was the only non tactics FF i liked, but i don't see me being able to stand the character designs and settings enough to enjoy the game on its combat alone.

Well maybe the game isn't as good as it looks, from the demo i've seen of Bayotnetta it looks like it could be a lot of fun, lets what other games got perfect.... Nintendogs?! what the hell.

I lost respect for Famistu since they gave Final Fantasy XII 40/40.

Just wait until we get the game.

39/40 is still a good score.  I don't see what the problem is.

@zyn: Yeah, I was pretty weirded out by that myself. I mean...really? What game did THEY play? >_> Maybe the Famitsu writers just have grand delusions of being game programmers, so the IF:THEN "basic"-style programming of the battle system appeaeld. I dunno...

why is this news?
also FFXII wasn't bad and at least it wasn't the same ol'bullshit that Square had been producing. so the gameplay was that of a MMO at least we didn't get stuck with a crappy Trun-based structure or the awful ATB system.
but back on-topic the 7 to 10 scale needs to die.

@JJOR64: 39/40 is still a good score, but when games like nintendogs and monster hunter 3 are "better" it makes you question. Its just nerdrage

I hope they don't just give us another FF12, what made the series so great in the bast is how every title felt like a new IP, no two FF games (main series) felt similar beyond the basic RPG elements,

Ha, even FF X and X-2 felt like completely different games ^_^

Eh, gamescores never impact whether or not i'll buy/play a game. FF13 looks good to me and i'll check out, that's all that matters to me.

Couldn't have said it better than that. Plus 39 is a damn good score. I don't really care if any games I enjoyed didn't get a perfect score. If I like most of what the game has to offer, I'll take a 39 than a 40 any day. Simple as that.

Plus I don't even think Famitsu is legit IMO. I disagree with almost all of their scores anyway. I mean FFXII a perfect score? They're way off track, because that game was not perfect at all.

I going wait in till I played it to see if it deserve a 10 out of 10.

I can't rate or even discuss something I've never played.

Squaresoft is no longer the greatest thing sense sliced Chocobo. Even Enix has sort of taken a hit as a great developer in the last couple of years. FF6 is my favorite JRPG of all time. FF7 was a great game I'll remember for all time. FFX was a fun JRPG and the last FF game I've actually finished. FF12 sucked ass ... I never even got past the 10 hour mark before throwing the DVD-R out the window.

This one you can take it or leave it. I honestly don't trust Square to come threw this time.

LOL John you're so melodramatic. Famitsu scores haven't really mattered for the past 5 years or so. Also this is myself personally but I believe the actual text of a review is more helpful in if I need an opinion on the game than some arbitrary score. Especially when games media in particular doesn't realise if they are using a 10 point scale that the worst a game can get is 0 and a 5 is average. (usually 7 is considered more average) I'm looking forward to EGM coming back soon.  Now there is an awesome videogame magazine that is highly regarded but was unfortunatly closed in Janurary because their parent company went bankrupt, hopefully the tradtition of fine journalism continues in it's revival though.

Either way I disagree with the afront on FFXII that was a fine game and a drastically different take on the same basic combat engine. Also, while eventually it did turn into group of teens has to save the world the story had this interesting political drama to it as well that again was something that hadn't been seen in a long time.

Although I realise different strokes for different folks and that quite a few people didn't like FFXII because it was too different from the same formula they have been using for the past ones and the seeming loss of control of having only one player in direct control at a time. The same thing happened with FFVIII when all the newcomers that got into Final Fantasy after VII were all weirded out when it was much different and none of them cared to figure out drawing (even though once you did it was so exploitable I was doing like 2K damage by the end of disc 1) and missed out on the awesomeness that occured. The whole game was one set piece after another, whether it was the Battle of the Garden, The Lunatic Pandora, Edea's Parade, etc. Oh and the way the cut scenes transitioned from the game, the soundtrack. That game was so amazing especially in comparison to VII, which is the most overrated Final Fantasy game ever.

Reviews are always subjective there is no such thing as an objective review. Everyone has their own opinions and biases based on their own likes, dislikes and events that have happened to them. So no matter what a review is just that it's an opinion and all you can do is try to find someone with the same tastes as you that reviews [insert entertainment product here] for a living and if they say it's good chances are you'll probably enjoy it. I mean take this who article for an example, some of the people here (myself included) think that you're totally wrong about FFXII being undeservant of the highest score and some people have even said FFVII was one of the best games in the series (IV, VI, VIII, XII, X, [X and XII are tied for me] V, VII, X-2, IX,  I, III, II) *Not including XI or tatics since they are fairly different from the mainline* where I would say it's about the middle for me.

Anyway the point is.

Don't believe in the you who believes in reviews! Believe in the you who believes in the game!
