Gia has promised us super awesome Final Fantasy trailers (with sound), but has left us high and dry; so your buddy God Len is here to set things right. Final Fantasy, and Square-Enix in general has had a pretty big showing at this year’s E3. Not only are they showing more of Final Fantasy XIII, but a new Final Fantasy game, Final Fantasy XIV as well. Move over World of Warcraft, XIV will be a MMORPG as well. Seeing as how Final Fantasy XI still is being played with lots of followers, I can imagine XIV becoming real popular, real fast. That and they had all this time learning what works and what doesn’t work in regards to creating an MMORPG.

Other than those two, I have for you a new Wii title, Final Fantasy Crystal Bearers, and a new trailer for Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days. I wish I can just wake up tomorrow, and all these games will be released and in my hands. We’ve been hearing about Final Fantasy XIV forever now, and I just can’t take it anymore. Seriously, someone could start and graduate high school while this game was in development. Anyways, check out all the trailers below.

Thanks for the vids! Final Fantasy XIII is looking good and I do have more interest in it now. Might look into XIV if it allows for a solo experience (which XI was limited on from what I've been told).

No real interest in the Crystal Bears (just couldn't get into the Crystal Chronicles series, and is one of the only Final Fantasies I've never completed). Kingdom Hearts was great, but lost interest in that series as well.

I don't know if that 358/2 video can really be called a trailer. So short.

You did actually watch the Crystal Bearers trailer, right? It has very little to do with the main CC series and is set in the far steampunkish future where magic is a lost art. It's not even an RPG but a straight-up action/adventure game as it will not have a leveling system.

I thought the original CC was horrible and I never bothered with any other games in the main series, but this is something I could get into provided the combat doesn't feel too gimmicky.

I'll be looking forward to KH 358/2 Days as well (I was originally going to import it but I think I'll just wait till September), but I don't have much interest in FF13 and especially not FF14.

I'm a pretty big FF fan (you couldn't tell)
And I've played MMOs since Everquest was new.
FFXI was for all intents and purposed terrible as far as MMOs go and really it still is.
If they actually think FFXI has taught them what works and what doesn't they certainly aren't putting any of it to good use. XIV needs to go in a whole new direction or it's going to be another stateside flop.

Every MMO that comes out with any sort of money behind it have had the same tag lines "The WoW killer" etc etc. The last one of those I was onboard for was the launch of Warhammer: Age of Reckoning.
WAR had a massive fan base built in
Lore deep enough to work with for YEARS
More money than WoW+EQ+EQ2+FFXI combined
The largest development team in MMO history
An army of paid, professional beta testers
The development team of previous successful MMO's such as DAoC
Development awards and RAVE reviews from all gaming magazines, etc etc etc

I was there on launch day along with 1.2 million subscribers, and was one of the first Iron Breakers in the world to hit max level of 40. Many from my guild were world firsts, and we continued, to dominate our enemies capturing keeps, sacking cities, and defeating entire dungeons, first in the world for many... then there was nothing... nothing to do, the game was empty at the end.

My guild quit, as did many people, dwindling the numbers to 300,000 and causing Mythic  to report a net loss of over 1 BILLION dollars.

I wish FFXIV the best but if you don't give Western gamers a chance at world competition you can kiss them all goodbye, none of this release it in Japan first, let them take / kill / dominate everything THEN let us join the fun as noobs in pros world. (I litterally refused to play XI for this reason) You also have to somehow win the hearts of Chinese and Korean gamers, (as most of WoW's inflated numbers are chinese subscriptions, as well as the largest MMO is never credited publicly for some reason is actually Perfect World, a game that has FAR exceeded WoW's subscriber base with almost nothing BUT chinese gamers. China reports that in thier estimation 1/3 of thier citizens are ADDICTED to the internet, if you can't win china, you'll never be on top of the MMO pile.

FUCK Final Fantasy XIV and its fucking MMOness. I don't have any interest in MMOs (I don't have anything against people who play them, it's just not my thing). That means I'm just stuck waiting for XV. Just like I was stuck waiting for XII. WHICH SUCKED. Holy shit, Squenix.

I guess I'm part of the minority of people that acually liked 12... Concerning 13, I hope they manage to fit a Japanese voice track in. I wasn't too impressed by what I've seen, but it might not be that bad... We'll see. As for 14, it has the possibility of succeeding because of its predecessor, which Squeenix can look to and build upon their successes and try to fix their mistakes. While 11 had some great storytelling going on, it suffered from bland gameplay, a terrible leveling system, and an exhausting, tedious endgame. The fact that Yoshida Akihiko of Tactics and 12 fame is the art director is a nice plus. We'll just have to wait and see.

@Sigue: I wasn't super-fond of 12, I just felt like the whole point of the gameplay was to take the player out of the equation as much as possible...no way to affect the story, the characters, and then all the auto-battle stuff? Didn't really feel like it was in the spirit of a "role-playing" game, though I still give Square Enix points for continually trying to do different things.

I wasn't a fan of XII either, not only was the story kind of bland, but the game started to feel more like a grind than an adventure, the characters were boring as well in my opinion. I never even made it though the entire game. XIII looks better, and I'm actually kind of impressed by the english dub, it sounds pretty good to me.

@gia: When have you really been able to affect the story or characters in a meaningful fashion in a Final Fantasy game? That's more of a criticism towards JRPGs in general than it is to FF12. The Gambit system did take most of the menial tasks out of the battles, but people wanted faster battles instead of having to choose Attack over and over again. When they got an auto-attack and a system to take some of the load off the player to make it faster, people complained about that. You either get a faster system where your control is limited or a slower system where you have more control. A fast-paced battle system where you control three characters at once isn't viable unless you dumb down the fights to what I would consider an unacceptable level.

Speaking of Kingdom Hearts - the VA for Mickey Mouse (a man named Allwine) passed away recently so if they have VA's on 358 then its a new VA and not him - his wife was Minnie fyi

@Sigue: Agreed, but XII brought lack of player involvement to a whole new level. No interesting sidequests (and no, trying to defeat four differe level 99 monsters doesn't count as "interesting"), no interesting characters and nothing you could do with them because you could give them all the exact same everything, the story was okay but overblown...

There weren't even the little sparks of life that VII had in terms of, say, dressing Cloud up as a girl having an effect on who Don Corneo selects, and how you interact with the girls has an effect on who you take out on a date later, etc. I miss that shit.

I really wanted to get my hands on a version that only Japan got, where each of the characters was relegated to a certain class. I think you could switch behind the classes though.

@gia: So what you're saying is that Final Fantasy needs more cross-dressing?
Post by Baku_Sensei (464 posts) See mini bio Level 10
Also, Gia, where you said that all the characters can do the same thing, the same is true for 7 and 8. Give anyone any materia, link anyone to any summon. I know they're different, but it's kind of the same thing.

@Sigue: Well, duh.
Post by gia (3,032 posts) See mini bio Level 13
@Baku_Sensei: Yeah, but the way you jumble everything up actually results somewhat differently. That's true in XII too...except that in XII, if it's not sort of what the character was "meant" for it only results terribly. >_>;
