The Final Fantasy franchise encompasses a number of video games, manga, movies and anime from the Final Fantasy universe. The franchise was created by Squaresoft (now Square Enix). At the time, Square was on its last legs, and considered the first game their "Final Fantasy" of success.

 Final Fantasy is a franchise created by Squaresoft that began as a video game, then moved into anime and manga. The franchise began in 1987 as an ambitious role playing game. Final Fantasy was meant to be the last desperate attempt by Square, so they decided to name the game "Final Fantasy.''
