As Soichiro looks as his daughter, Sayu, still recovering from being kidnapped by Mello, he ponders about what is he going to do with his life.
Ryuk is alone at Light's hotel room when a Shinigami named Sidoh appears asking him for his Death Note. As he flies, Sidoh also flies with him, demanding to get his Death Note back. Ryuk replies that he doesn't know where it is and that Sidoh should look for it by himself.
Meanwhile, Aizawa and Matsuda are filing a report on Wammy House. It is a school for gifted children, but the real purpose is to turn children into like L. The top two students are Near and Mello. Light realizes that Near is N and that he is still fighting L.
In order to find out which mafia Mello is in, Light has Misa check the mafia members with their photos. Using her Shinigami eyes, she finds out that Kal Snyder owns the Death Note because his lifespan is not shown. Light begins to manipulate Synder's actions into mailing Mello's hideout within 23 days and dying on November 10 at 11:59 PM. Soon enough, he gets the address: 945 Clydown Ave. Los Angeles, CA 90103. Light burns the paper after remembering the address and unknown to him, Sidoh is spying on him for the location of the mafia.
When getting to the hideout, Sidoh puts the Death Note in to Snyder, the owner. He orders him touch the Death Note in order to make everyone see him. The mafia shoots him, but Sidoh still stands, proving he is a real Shinigami.
Meanwhile, Light forfeit ownership of his Death Note, but knowing that he will lose his memories, he borrows Misa's notebook and keep it on his body until he gets his back.
At the mafia hideout, Sidoh tells that the two rules that Light made up are fake. He guessed that some Shinigami put up these fake rules as a prank. Mello wonders if Kira is using the two rules in his advantage and orders Sidoh to guard the front entrance as the others don't see him.
Later, Soichiro gets a call from Kira, who is happened to be Misa, about offering the Death Note to him and the rest of the Task Force. With the notebook with Soichiro, he rejoins with them and he will be the one to get the Shinigami eyes from Ryuk, who is now seen by the everyone. At 11:47 PM on November 10, the Task Force hides in front of the mafia hideout, prepared with face shields weapons and the necessary armor, with Light guiding them at the hotel. Light then orders his father to make the eye trade with Ryuk at that time. Soichiro then takes out the pictures of the known mafia members. Once their names and life spans disappear, they blast open the entrance and move into the building.
Mello concludes that Kira is behind the attack. While fleeing, he orders one of the members to take the note from one of the bodies. While the two mafia members get the note, the Task Force bursts in, throws a smoke bomb, and shoots the note out of their hands. With the notebook finally retrieved, the Task Force is about to head out, when Light stops them. Suspecting that Mello is still in the building, he wants the Task Force to find him. Suddenly, an explosion occurs within the building-Mello sealed off the two remaining exits and threatens to destroy the entire building next if the Task Force does not do as he commands.
Soichiro reveals himself to Mello by removing his helmet. Mello mocks him for his attempt on getting the Death Note back. With the Shinigami eyes, Soichiro sees Mello's real name, Mihael Keehl.
Light, listening from the speaker, is surprised that his father has no intention to kill Mello. Instead, he just threatened him to write his name down. With Mello armed with a hand gun and an explosive, the two are at a stalemate, until one of the supposed dead mafia members grabs a gun on the floor and fires at Soichiro. Hearing the gunshots, the rest of the Task Force runs into the room and aims at Mello, who is now masked. But at that moment, Mello detonates his explosive, leveling the entire building.
The entire Task Force is at the hospital, tending their wounds. Soichiro looks at Light and sees him with his lifespan, concluding that he is not Kira, and he is so glad of him. Light hysterically tells his father to write Mello's name, but he dies. Light and the rest of the Task Force are saddened by his death.
Afterwards, the Task Force and Light return the notebook to Sidoh, who immediately flies off. Ryuk then thinks to himself that humans who actually use the Death Note are destined for a life of misery. Since Soichiro never wrote a name down in the note, he was able to die happy, believing that his only son was not Kira.
