Visual Novel and Anime versions

I kinda started getting interested in visual novels (the biggest reason for that is the amazing Ever 17, check it out if you like VNs), and I am aware that a lot of people hold Fate/Stay Night visual novel on high regard. 
 
But the thing is, I've already watched the anime series, and I hated it. It was plain and boring, mostly due to Shiro whose stupidity annoyed me to no end. Saber was also kind of lame (just my personal opinion, don't hate). 
 
The question is for people who have played the visual novel, will I be able to like it? I'm really interested in trying it out if it's different from the anime. Will I still have the same problems I had with the anime series?

Hrm, tough to say. I went into the visual novel having really enjoyed Fate (despite Emiya for the most part...) and I did enjoy the visual novel, though it took me a while to get through. Something to keep in mind is that the visual novel has many different paths you can take, so if you don't like saber so much, you can hang with Tohsaka or Sakura instead. Emiya, like many protagonists of visual novels, is uninteresting in the anime because he's supposed to be a vehicle for the player, and as such in the original source material he doesn't do a whole lot. Maybe you won't mind him as much in the visual novel because you won't be watching him, but BEING him.

I also watched the anime before playing the game. While I didn't hate the series, I don't really have any particular fondness for it either. I liked Saber, but everyone else in the series came off as a bit dull and uninteresting. When I started playing the game, I was curious to see if it would appeal to me any more than the series did. Unfortunately, it didn't really. By the end my opinion of the game pretty much mirrored my opinion of the series.
 
While my opinion of the game is identical to the series, it may be different for you. It's a well made game and it's enjoyable in that sense. There are also a variety of versions, as well as non-visual novel games, in the series.
 
Have you tried Tsukihime? It's done by the same people that did Fate/Stay Night, but I enjoyed it more. I found the characters to be more interesting, even if some of the plot twists were a little ridiculous.

@AgentJ: It seems to me that I might be able to like it then, since you actually take the role of Shiro. Thanks, I'm going to try and see how much will I like it! :)

@AgentJ: It's been quite some time, so I thought I'd report back.

It seems most of the problems I had with the anime are not so prevalent in the game. I feel the game does a much better job explaining Shirou's motives and reasons for his ideals. I also liked Saber a lot more in the game than in the anime. Overall, I'm definitely having fun with it, so far it isn't even close to Ever17 (which has the most amazing story I ever experienced, it's like the Inception of videogames). Although that might change for the better, since I still have one more route to do. I'd definitely recommend this visual novel to anyone. Also, the localization is really, really good. Almost no spelling/grammar errors, and everything is easy to read and comprehend.

Really glad to hear you liked it! They did a movie for Unlimited Blade Works, so maybe you should take a look. I only did one route (the anime route) just because I rarely have the patience for multiple play throughs of anything. But I already knew about Archer, so don't worry about whether you spoiled anything for me :P
If you watch closely, he eludes to that in the anime.

If he gets even more badass than UBW, then I absolutely can't delay the next path anymore. I'm certainly looking forward to it :)

oh he is, let just say GIlgamesh fight weren't all that "good" (GIl didn't pull up say EA)
I promise you after this thing, if you keep visualizing Shirou as Sanger Zonbolt it is not that far off
