Welcome, my fellow AnimeVice members, to this my fifth installment of the Weekly Figure Preview feature here on the Vice. Last week, we previewed three anime figures (Hitagi, Saber Alter, Erica) along with one nendoroid (Kuroneko), and this week will feature the same preview formula. All of the figures/nendoroids that will be featured in this preview can be found on Play-Asia's site. If there are any figures that do not appear on Play-Asia's site, then I will provide a link for the product at the end of the figure's respective article. The line up for today, as follows:

I will give the readers a preview of each figure, complete with two images, descriptions, price, and my overall thoughts on each figure.

Fate/unlimited Codes 1/8th Scale PVC: Saber Lily (Gift Version)

Produced by the Gift Company in a distributive deal with Good Smile Company and licensed by TYPE MOON and Capcom as a official product from their hit fighting game Fate/unlimited Codes on the PS2/PSP, the 1/8th Scale Fate/unlimited Codes PVC Saber Lily figure is expected to see global market release around June 2011 in Japan and on Play-Asia's site for roughly 9,570 Yen (excluding taxes). It was sculpted by the talented figure sculptor Toda Satoshi in cooperation with figure painter Saura for the Good Smile Company.
Earlier this week, I decided that this week's preview would feature at least two figures from one particular anime/manga franchise, and after some thought, I decided on featuring two figures related to the Fate/stay Night franchise. This special version of Saber is her new Saber Lily form from the hit Arcade/PS2/PSP fighting game Fate/unlimited Codes (Which saw release in 2008 in Japan and made it's way to the western audience in September 2009) produced by Capcom. I was unsuccessful in locating much information regarding Saber's Lily form (spent several hours on Wikipedia, Giant Bomb, and various game sites), so I can not elaborate fully into what makes this version of her so special compared to her standard form. What I like about this figure is the attention to detail that Gift and sculptor Toda Satoshi has put into this figure, from her overall appearance to the detail on her armor plating down to the confident smile on Saber's face. As a fan of both the Fate/stay Night anime as well as the manga series, that is perhaps the single biggest reason that I chose to feature this greatly detailed Saber Lily from Gift and Good Smile. She would make a great addition to anyone's figure collection that is looking to add a good quality figure to their expanding collection that will not hurt you in the pocketbook as some figures of the same quality can.

Okami-San and Her Seven Companions 1/8th Scale PVC: Ryoko Okami

Produced by the ALTER Corporation and licensed by the joint association of ASCII Media Works and J.C. Staff as part of their officially licensed Okami-san line of products, the 1/8th Scale Okami-san and Her Seven Companions PVC Ryoko Okami figure is expected to see global market release towards the end of this month (February 2011) in Japan and on Play-Asia's site for roughly 7,070 Yen (excluding taxes). Unfortunately, I was unable to discover exactly who sculpted this figure, but it was done for the ALTER Corporation.
Since I am new to the entire Okami-san and Her Seven Companions anime as well as the Okami-san franchise, I had to at first research more information regarding the Okami-san anime as well as it's main female protagonist, Ryoko Okami on both AnimeVice and AnimeNewsNetwork. I first came across this figure when browsing the line up of upcoming figure releases on ALTER's site (through Google Translator, since the site is in Japanese), and had originally intended to feature her two weeks ago, but I decided to wait until a later date closer to the actual release date. Scowling at those who dare to look her in the face, Ryoko Okami shoots a cold, intense glare at all who attempt to make eye contact with her. The intricate detail and care that ALTER has put into her is nothing short of amazing, from the details on her school outfit down to the stern expression she has on her face. She comes with her infamous Neko Neko Knuckles on her belt and to my knowledge, she has no swappable/removable parts on her. I am not 100% sure what about this figure captured my attention to the point that I decided to feature her, but in the end, I know a good figure when I see one, and with ALTER behind the reins, this figure is sure not to disappoint whoever decides to add her to their expanding collection. She would make a great addition for the figure collector who is looking for a high-quality figure that will not break the bank in the process. Perhaps one of these days I will look into Okami-san and Her Seven Companions, especially after reading the good things that FoxxFireArt had to say about it in his earlier blogs.

Fate/stay Night 1/8th Scale PVC: Rin Tohsaka (UNLIMITED BLADE WORKS Version)

Produced by the Good Smile Company and licensed by the joint association of TYPE MOON and the Fate-UBW Project as part of their official line of products related to the hit anime movie Fate/stay Night: UNLIMITED BLADE WORKS, the 1/8th Scale Fate/stay Night PVC Rin Tohsaka figure is expected to see global market release in May 2011 in Japan and on Play-Asia's site for roughly 8,730 Yen (excluding taxes). It was crafted by the talented figure sculptor Ken Yokota for the Good Smile Company.
As a fan of the Fate/stay Night franchise (having both read the entire manga series and completed 70% of the hit anime show), I was interested in the fact that there was a movie that re-told part of the Fate/stay Night story, so I decided to take a deeper look into it. After browsing around for several minutes, I came across this amazing figure of female character and powerful magus Rin Tohsaka, surrounded by various swords and holding her red pendant in her hand as her long brown hair swirls around her. She comes with a swappable sword Azoth that replaces her pendant on her left hand and to my knowledge, that is the only part of her that can be changed. Seeing the great quality that both sculptor Ken Yokota and Good Smile have put into her is amazing, from her flowing brown hair to the swords sticking out of the base down to the overall appearance of her outfit, this is one figure that is sure not to disappoint whoever adds her to their collection. She would make a great addition to the figure collector that is looking for a high quality figure that will make a eye-catching and interesting addition to their collection.

Nendoroid Corner: Fortune Arterial Nendoroid Non-Scale PVC: Erika Sendo

In this installment of the Nendoroid Corner, we will be looking into another of Good Smile Company's amazing nendoroids. This week, we feature Erika Sendo from the popular Fortune Arterial franchise, known for it's Japanese adult visual novels and the recently released anime show. Produced by the Good Smile Company in cooperation with Nendoron and in the joint association of ASCII Media Works, AUGUST, and Zexcs as part of their official line of Fortune Arterial products, the Non-Scale Fortune Arterial Nendoroid PVC Erika Sendo figure is expected to see global market release around June 2011 in Japan and via Good Smile's site for roughly 3,500 Yen (excluding taxes). It was crafted by the talented figure sculptor JUN (E.V.) for the Good Smile Company.
Being new to the Fortune Arterial anime as well as the Fortune Arterial franchise, I had to spend some time researching this franchise on both AnimeVice and Wikipedia at first so I could learn more information regarding 5th-year student Erika Sendo, the main female lead in both the Fortune Arterial anime and visual novels. She comes with multiple swappable arms and legs that allow for various poses, as well as a chair along with her white tea cup and saucer to pose with. Erika comes with 3 faces, her winking face (pictured above), a smiling face, and her red-eyed serious vampire face that can be changed to the collector's preferences. I am still not a big fan of these nendoroids, but with each one of these Good Smile nendoroids that I feature in every new preview, I am slowly becoming more and more interested in these mini figures and their unique appearances compared to normal scale figures. Once again, Good Smile along with Nendoron and figure sculptor JUN have done a incredible job with this nendoroid, from her overall appearance down to the colorful details on every visible part of her. She would make a colorful and cute addition to the collector's expanding nendoroid collection who is looking for a good quality figure that they can purchase for a decent price and make the centerpiece of their collection.

Bakemonogatari 1/8th Scale PVC: Hitagi Senjogahara (Good Smile Version)

Produced by the Good Smile Company and licensed by Shaft Studios as part of their official line of Bakemonogatari products, the 1/8th Scale Bakemonogatari PVC Hitagi Senjougahara figure is currently available on the global market since January 2011 in Japan and on Play-Asia's site for roughly 9,900 Yen (excluding taxes). It is sculpted by the talented figure sculptor Hironori Tokunaga with cooperation from Takayuki Kawahara for the Good Smile Company.
Being new to the Bakemonogatari anime as well as the Bakemonogatari franchise from Shaft Studios, I had to go and research more about the franchise and for Hitagi Senjogahara, the main female protagonist of the Bakemonogatari franchise. I came across this unique figure on the Good Smile Company site several weeks ago when looking up additional images for the Black Gold Saw preview I did two previews ago, so I decided that I would get around to featuring this figure, which caught my attention with all of the stationary falling out of her lifted skirt. She comes with a second swappable skirt as well as swappable hands that allows her to hold two staplers in her hands and the cascading stationary can be removed to how the collector wishes to display it in their collection. I really like the amount of effort and detail that both sculptors Hironori Tokunaga and Takayuki Kawahara along with Good Smile have put into this figure, from the flowing purple hair of Hitagi to her overall outfit and to the cascading stationary that rains down from beneath her lifted skirt. She would make a wonderful addition to anyone's figure collection who is looking for a high quality figure that is both eye-catching and unique to all who lay eyes upon it. Bakemonogatari was on my "To Watch" list in 2009, but sadly I never got around to it. Perhaps it is time I looked into it after all...

Fate/Stay Night 1/7th Scale PVC: Saber Alter (Vortigern Version)

Produced by the Good Smile Company and licensed by TYPE-MOON as part of their official Fate/Stay Night line of products, the 1/7th Scale Fate/Stay Night PVC Saber Alter figure is expected to see global market release in April 2011 in Japan and on Play-Asia's site for roughly 9,490 Yen (excluding taxes). It is crafted by the talented figure sculptor Hiroshi (Sakurazensen) for the Good Smile Company.
For the first time since the 2nd preview, I am finally doing a preview on a figure that I am somewhat knowledgeable about, having read the Fate/Stay Night manga and watched some of the anime show last year. This figure's take on the lead female protagonist Saber is her Alter version, which is what Saber becomes when tainted by a evil shadow that corrupts her standard form. Filled with dark energy and poised to strike at her enemies with her powerful sword Excalibur, Saber's face is covered with a wicked mask that adds to the incredible job that both Hiroshi and Good Smile have put into this figure, from the details of her overall armor to her sword Excalibur down to the rugged terrain that makes up part of her base. She also comes with the Vortigern, the wicked blade that forms when Saber Alter summons up all of the dark energy in her system that can be swapped with her Excalibur and the mask on her face is removable to reveal the sinister glare in her now golden eyes. If you are a Fate/Stay Night fan or not, she would make a great addition to your growing figure collection due to the amazing job that Good Smile did in producing this incredible figure. This is the next figure that I will be investing in later this year, and hopefully you too will add her to your collection. I should get around to finishing the anime one of these days...

Strike Witches 1/8th Scale PVC: Erica Hartmann (Re-Run of May 2010 Figure)

Produced by the Kotobukiya Corportaion and licensed by AIC Spirits Studios as part of the line up of official Strike Witches products, the 1/8th Scale Strike Witches PVC Erica Hartmann figure is currently available on the global market since January 2011 in Japan and on Play-Asia's site for roughly 7,010 Yen. Unfortunately, I was unable to locate the information regarding who crafted it on Play-Asia, Neko Magic, or on Kotobukiya's own site (it seems that they removed their Strike Witches section from their site), so sadly I do not know who exactly crafted her.
Now, I know that some of you that read last week's preview might be thinking "Hey, another Strike Witches figure? We saw the ALTER Corporation Charlotte Elwood Yeager one last week!", but one of the reasons that I choose to feature this Strike Witches figure is to compare it quality-wise to the incredible figure that the ALTER Corporation established in their Charlotte figure. I am not knocking on the quality of Kotobukiya Corporation's figures, but I am trying to compare their offering of a figure from a hit series to another figure of the same series from another company. Having roughly educated myself last week about the Strike Witches franchise and Strike Witches anime through research, I was aware of who Erica Hartmann was, but needed to look up more info regarding her character before previewing this figure. As stated in a prior preview, with me being a certified sucker for anime girls with guns, that was probably the main reason I first decided to feature Erica in this week's preview. She comes with swappable blades for her striker unit (one pair of stopped blades and a pair of spinning blades), the military hat on her head is removable to whatever the collector wishes to display her with, and her position can be altered slightly from the support that rises from her blue base. The detail that Kotobukiya has put into her is respectable, from her black military outfit to her machine gun that she wields into battle with the Neuroi forces. She would make a great addition to anyone who already owns Strike Witches figures or for anyone who is looking for a good quality figure that is not big of a hit to the wallet as some other figures can be.

Nendoroid Corner: Non-Scale Ore no Imouto ga Konna ni Kawaii ga Nai! PVC: Kuroneko

For this week's installment of the Nendoroid Corner, we will be looking into the other nendoroid featured by the Good Smile Company from the hit anime/manga series Ore no Imouto ga Konna ni Kawaii ga Nai. Today, we will be previewing Kuroneko, one of several female characters from Ore no Imouto and the otaku friend of Kirino Kosaka, who was featured in last week's preview. Produced by the Good Smile Company in cooperation with Nendoron and officially licensed by the joint association of Aniplex and ASCII Media Works, the Non-Scale Nendoroid PVC Kuroneko is expected to see global market release around April 2011 in Japan and on Play-Asia's site for roughly 3,460 Yen (excluding taxes). She is crafted by the talented figure sculptor Maruhige for the Good Smile Company.
Still being relatively new to the Ore no Imouto anime and the Ore no Imouto franchise, I had to look up more information regarding both the franchise and Kuroneko, one of the female characters of the popular anime franchise that Good Smile decided to make a nendoroid for in a collaboration with the Kirino Kosaka nendoroid that hits the market later this month.  She comes with several swappable facial expressions (Happy, Relieved, and Concern), a attachable set of kitty ears, as well as several swappable arms and legs to change up her pose to what the collector wants her displayed with along with a DVD case of her beloved "MASCHERA: Lament of a Fallen Beast" for her to hold in her hand. As I have stated before, I am not much of a fan of nendoroids in general, but Good Smile is slowly winning me over with all of these high quality nendoroids that I have been featuring lately. She would make a great addition to the nendoroid collector that is looking for a great quality figure that is both eye-catching and customizable to their needs. Still don't think that I will ever give the Ore no Imouto ga Konna ni Kawaii Wake ga Nai anime a try, but at least you can own part of it...

With the recent launch of a new Fate/Zero website and the impending February announcement that Fate/Zero will be a 2011 anime series to be produced by Aniplex (studio responsible for both anime series Shiki and another Type-Moon film series, Kara no Kyoukai), Fate/Zero has the potential of being among the best anime series of the year.
 
Those familiar with the original visual novel and franchise of Fate/Stay Night may also be aware of its prequel series of light novels by the title of Fate/Zero. Even if you aren't familiar with the franchise, you might recognize this infamous moment from the anime adaptation (produced not by Aniplex, but Studio DEEN): 

Memes and terrible moments in anime aside, I actually appreciated the anime series of Fate/Stay Night and the interesting universe it established. It was also my first glimpse on the works of Type-Moon. Because of this series, I actively began to look out for what works might be adapted from Type-Moon next. If it wasn't for my interest in the publisher coming out of the Fate/Stay Night anime, I never would have known the exceptional anime film series Kara no Kyoukai - my all-time favorite completed (Rebuild of Evangelion may challenge this over the next few years when it concludes) anime film series. 
 
Kara no Kyoukai is, essentially, a series of seven feature-length supernatural, psychological thrillers following the story of Shiki Ryougi, a teenager gifted with the ability of visualizing every living thing's mortality in the form of lines. By cutting those lines, she able to instantly kill any living thing. While most of the film series follows her work in assisting an agency tied with maintaining the balance of magic's delicate existence by investigating unusual, supernatural occurrences, there are some very profound conflicts in these cases and even underlying the core of this series of films. As I've said, this film was done by Aniplex and is among my favorite profound anime series of all time.   


Because of how much I loved Kara no Kyoukai and the fact that Aniplex will also be responsible for producing the Fate/Zero anime, I have high expectations. 
 
If you're getting turned off that this risks being another Fate/Stay Night, I'll present a little background that may dismiss your low expectations: this prequel follows the story of Kiritsugu Emiya, who much unlike his son Shirou, doesn't mind adopting questionably underhanded strategies such as taking advantage of technology to exploit the weaknesses of competing magicians. Kiritsugu lacks the idealism of Shirou and doesn't mind being a coldblooded killer to achieve his ultimate end of defending humanity. 
 
He has the potential of being a refreshing, anti-hero of a protagonist, something I haven't seen in an anime of this sort for a while. Aniplex has done an awesome job with developing morally ambiguous characters (once again, I cannot praise Kara no Kyoukai nor Shiki enough, here) and I expect Kiritsugu to be one my favorite anime protagonists for the upcoming year. Not to mention, I am also excited in seeing more of Saber!
 
I am definitely looking forward to the upcoming Fate/Zero anime series. Are you?

Super Duper Mini Review

 


  Kurokami, aka Black God and aka Kurokami: The Animation, is an anime based on the ongoing manga of the same name, which is written by Dall-Young Lim and illustrated by Sung-Woo Park.  There are 23 episodes and one OVA created by Sunrise.  The show was directed by Tsuneo Koboyashi and written by Reiko Yoshida.
 
 
Genres: action, drama, fantasy
 
 
Plot Summary
 

In this world, there are three identical looking people in existence who split between them an energy-like force called “Terra.” This energy can be attributed to the amount of “Luck” or “Life Energy” that an individual possesses. There also exists beings who observe the human world, maintaining the balance of Terra, known as the “Coexistence Equilibrium.” These beings possess ability that surpass that of a normal human being and reside in hiding in places known as the “Pure Place” in tribes. They are called the Terra Guardians. This is a tale of battle that begins with a chance meeting between a human boy named Keita and a young Tera Guardian girl named Kuro.

 
Pros:

• A solid cast of characters.
• The art style kinda has a dark/griddy feeling in some spots and light/happy in some spots.  It was a nice blend of the two.
  
• Really interesting concepts used in the show like the Doppeliner System and the whole contract thing was neat.
  
• Tons of fight scenes through out the show which aren't to shabby.
• Some nice twists as the show progresses.
  

Cons:

• A slow start.
• While some of the twists were nice, some of them have been done before.
• Some events in the show were predictable.

 
Fun Facts & Notes:

• In the manga Keita is a 19 year old freelance computer programmer.
•  The manga is created entirely by a Korean manhwa team led by both Lim and Park. They would occasionally make fun of the fact that none of them were fluent in Japanese in omake segments drawn at the end of each manga volume.
  

 
 
If you are into modern day action/fantasy shows like Shakugan no Shana or Fate/Stay Night, I say give this show a try and see how you like it.

What's a Super Duper Mini Review? Well, since I'm taking a break from written reviews, I decided to put a short list of what I liked and didn't like about the shows I review and put down some notes and fun facts as well. For some info about the show like genre, plot summary, etc., I borrow some info from Anime News Network, Wikipedia, and of course our wiki here on Anime Vice.

I <3 them and thought some others may want to see them on here as well.

Plot Summary: Shirou Emiya lost his parents in a fire when he was young and was later adopted by a sorcerer by the name of Kiritsugu Emiya. Although he was full of admiration for his adopted father and yearns to become an ally of justice, Shirou has limited powers and was unable to become a strong sorcerer like his father. That is until one fateful day, he was drawn into the Holy Grail War and had to summon a female "Servant" known as Saber in order to protect himself. It turns out that the Holy Grail War involves a series of battles among powerful sorcerers to fight for the possession of a relic that will grant one's wishes, the Holy Grail. There are altogether seven "Masters" who can summon their respective "Servants" from different classes known as Saber, Archer, Rider, Berserker, Lancer, Caster and Assassin. These "Servants" have to hide their names in order not to reveal their weaknesses to the enemies. The story revolves around Shirou and his entanglement in the Holy Grail War.

After a long wait, I have finally seen Fate/Stay Night.  This show was actually on the top of my "to watch" list but, I kept putting it off.  With nothing to watch, I finally decided to check it out.  Fate/Stay Night was a very good show.
 
The best thing about this show was defiantly the story (look at top of this blog).  It can get a little confusing and over the top and times but, I thought it was very interesting and kept the show going.  In a weird way, it kinda felt like Zach Bell.  Don't ask my how or why, it just did to me with all the "Masters" and "Servants" things but, this show was way better then that one.  Another great thing about the show was the characters.  Shirou, Saber, Rin, Archer, Illya, and many more.  It seems like the whole cast of character were very good.  The only thing I didn't like was Shirou.  Well, his outfit.  While everyone is dressed up in some fancy way, most of the time he was just wearing a plain shirt and jeans.  Real original guys.
 
Fate/Stay Night was a very enjoyable show.  It has a great story and a great cast of characters.  This is one of the shows that seems like it could have been a little longer or maybe make another series.  As some of you may know, this show is based on a adult visual novel of the same name.  It would be cool if they picked a different story ark and made it into another season but, only a fan can wish for me.  If you enjoy action/fantasy shows, give this one a look.
