A popular anime series based on an adult visual novel in which an amateur mechanic/high school student finds himself to be the master of Saber, a female 'servant' in a deadly secret war between magi.


This series originally a adult visual novel is made up of 7 games on multiple systems the first in 2004 as well as a manga illustrated by Nishiwaki Datto which ran from February 2006 to December 2012 , an anime series directed by Yuji Yamaguchi in 2006, an Anime Film directed by Yuji Yamaguchi and written by Takuya Sato in 2010 and a 12 minute OVA in 2011.


Shirou Emiya lost his parents in a fire when he was young and was later adopted by a sorcerer by the name of Kiritsugu Emiya. Although he was full of admiration for his adopted father and yearns to become an ally of justice, Shirou has limited powers and was unable to become a strong sorcerer like his father. That is until one fateful day, he was drawn into the Holy Grail War and had to summon a female "Servant" known as Saber in order to protect himself. It turns out that the Holy Grail War involves a series of battles among powerful sorcerers to fight for the possession of a relic that will grant one's wishes, the Holy Grail. There are altogether seven "Masters" who can summon their respective "Servants" from different classes known as Saber, Archer, Rider, Berserker, Lancer, Caster and Assassin. These "Servants" have to hide their names in order not to reveal their weaknesses to the enemies. The story revolves around Shirou and his entanglement in the Holy Grail War.


Main Characters

Shirō Emiya (衛宮 士郎)

Gender: Male
Shirō who is nice high school student and he is always willing to help out others. He lost his parents 10 years before in the last Holy Grail War suddenly finds himself with a servant of his own. Saber is powerful though Shiro is unskilled in most traditional forms of sorcery, and therefore focuses on two minor abilities the first is tracing, the power to analyze the structural composition of objects, and the second reinforcement, the power to increase their structural integrity. He has a strong sense of self and dreams of saving the world his main drive is wanting to protect everyone.
Saber (セイバー)
Voiced by: Ayako Kawasumi Kate Higgins (TV) Michelle Ruff (UBW)
Gender: Female
Saber is Shiro's servant while she seems cold on the outside to others its actually just to better focus on the battle before her. She is a Saber type and fights at first with an invisiable sword that later fully manifests. She is truly Arturia Pendragon or King Arthur who gave up her humanity for the sake of her people.
Rin Tōsaka (遠坂 凛)
Voiced by: Kana Ueda Mela Lee
Gender: Female
Rin a Magus, and a Master in the Fifth Holy Grail War and Archer's master she has been preparing for the Holy Grail War for 10 years instructed by her father, Tokiomi Tōsaka, to prioritize sorcery over her own interests.. She got Archer although she wanted a Saber. Her guardian, Kirei Kotomine is the moderator for the Holy Grail War.
Archer (アーチャー)
Voiced by: Junichi Suwabe Liam O'Brien
Gender: Male
Archer is the Servant of Rin Tōsaka. He has a crass personality and doesn't believe they should be trying to save everyone and is the is a living incarnation of the "Hero of Justice". Archer is a Faker, an individual skilled at creating imitations of objects through the use of tracing and projection of mental images to form tangible objects. His epic hero identity is the "Hero of Justice".
Sakura Matō (間桐 桜)

Voiced by: Noriko Shitaya Sherry Lynn

Gender: Female

Sakura who has a crush on Shiro and has been taking care of him since he got hurt in a accident even though he was fully healed. While she seems quiet and timid she has a lot of heart and when she is determined she has no problem standing up for herself.

Kiritsugu Emiya (衛宮切嗣)
Voiced by: Rikiya Koyama Kirk Thornton
Gender: Male
Kiritsuga is Shiro's adopted father, he saved Shiro when he was young and then adopted him. Shiro took his striving to be a hero to heart and worked to be like him. At age 29, he becomes Saber's Master for the fourth Holy Grail War, the events of which are covered in Fate/Zero. He later dies from a curse that was a result of that war at the age of 34.
Taiga Fujimura (藤村 大河)
Voiced by: Miki Ito , Julie Ann Taylor
Gender: Female
Taiga Fujimura is an English teacher at Shirō's school, and homeroom instructor of Shirō's class as well as the supervising teacher for the archery dojo. After Kiritsugu dies Taiga becomes Shirō's guardian.
Shinji Matō (間桐 慎二)
Voiced by: Hiroshi Kamiya Doug Erholtz
Gender: Male
Shinji Mato is Sakura Matō's older brother, and a long-time friend of Shirō. Shinji is very popular as vice-captain of the archery dojo. He is Riders master and he tries to get both Rin and Shiro to join him and then tries to kill them when they both refuse. He is cowardly and can produce no magic on his own.
Rider (ライダー)
Voiced by: Yu Asakawa, Karen Strassman
Gender: Female
Rider is the Servant of Shinji her weapon of choice is a pair of long iron nails fastened to opposite ends of a single chain. Her epic identity is Medusa.
Illyasviel von Einzbern (イリヤスフィール・フォン・アインツベルン)
Voiced by: Mai Kadowaki , Jennifer Sekiguchi
Gender: Female
Illyasviel who is deceptively sweet looking has great magic powers and wields it with her servant Berserker. After Berserker is killed she goes to live with Shiro. She is in fact a homunculus and was made to die after the end of the 5th Holy Grail War.
Berserker (バーサーカー)
Voiced by: Tadahisa Saizen , Michael McConnohie
Gender: Male
Berserker is the Servant of Illya he wields a colossal axe-club.Berserker needs to be killed 12 times to be eliminated, one for each of Hercules's twelve labors as his identity is Hurcules.
Kirei Kotomine (言峰 綺礼)
Voiced by: Jouji Nakata , Taylor Henry
Gender: Male
Kirei Kotomine is the moderator of the 5th Holy Grail War due to an agreement between the Mages' Association and the Christ, that the Holy Grail Wars are moderated by a priest. His father held the position before him. He is a master from the 4th Holy Grail War.
Lancer (ランサー)
Voiced by: Nobutoshi Canna Tony Oliver
Gender: Male
Lancer is a fierce fighter and is one of Kirei's servants. He fights with a long, red spear which inflicts wounds that do not heal. He enjoys a fight against a good opponent and has no problem with his name being known. Lancer was Cúchulainn in his previous life.
Gilgamesh (ギルガメッシュ)
Voiced by: Tomokazu Seki Grant George
Gender: Male
Gilgamesh Archer-class Servant to Kirei is egotistical and believes Saber to be his property. He repeatedly asks her to come and be his wife which she adamantly refuses. He can draw swords out individually for close combat, or fire them out of his gate like bullets. He possesses an immense number of Noble Phantasms so that not even Saber knows his identity.
Soichiro Kuzuki (葛木 宗一郎)
Voiced by: Kazuhiro Nakata , Patrick Seitz
Gender: Male
Sōichirō Kuzuki appears to be an impersonal teacher but he is actually a highly trained assassin who has no qualms about letting his servant Caster do whatever she wants.
Caster (キャスター)
Voiced by: Atsuko Tanaka Tara Platt
Gender: Female
Caster unlike other Servants, does not wield a weapon for physical combat, but her rank allows her to manipulate Mana and perform magic. She takes in souls to make herself stronger in order to extend her time with Kuzuki.
Assassin (アサシン)
Voiced by: Shinichiro Miki David Vincent

Gender: Male
Assassin is a solitary Servant due to not having a master he must depend entirely on Castor for mana cannot move freely beyond the grounds of Ryuudou Temple.
Zoken Matō (間桐 臓硯)
Voiced by: Masane Tsukayama
Gender: Male
Zōken is a ancient sorcerer who is patriarch of the Matō family and is known to be the grandfather of Shinji and Sakura. He was also one of the three original masterminds behind the Holy Grail system.
True Assassin (真アサシン)
Voiced by: Tetsu Inada
Gender: Male
True Assassin is Zokens Servant the designation of "True" is meant to distinguish this Assassin from another Servant that has usurped his place in the current war. His epic identity is that of the legendary Persian "Old Man of the Mountain" , Hassan-i-Sabah, the leader of al-Assasīn

This franchise was originally a Japanese visual novel developed by Type-Moon, which was originally released as an adult game for Windows on January 30, 2004.

Fate/stay night Réalta Nua (2004)

A version of Fate/stay night rated for ages 15 and up titled Fate/stay night Réalta Nua which features the Japanese voice actors from the anime series, was released for the PlayStation 2 and later for download on Windows as a trilogy covering the three main story lines.

Fate/hollow Ataraxia (October 2005)

On October 28, 2005, Type-Moon released a sequel to Fate/stay night, titled Fate/hollow Ataraxia which takes place half a year after the events of Fate/stay night.

Fate/tiger colosseum (2007)

A fighting based game, based on the Franchise, for the PlayStation Portable by Capcom was released in 2007.

Fate/tiger colosseum Upper (August 2008)

The sequel to Fate/Tiger colosseum which is Fate/Tiger colosseum Upper was released on August 28, 2008

Fate/Unlimited Codes (December 2008)

Another fighting based game by Capcom Fate/Unlimited Codes was release on December 18, 2008 in Arcades. A pre-order version was also available which includes a limited edition Saber Lily figure.

Fate/Extra (July 2010)

An RPG game that was called Fate/Extra was originally schedualed for release in March 2010, the release date was pushed back to July 22, 2010 for further testing. In July 2011, Aksys Games confirmed it would be publishing Fate/Extra in North America.


Fate/Stay Night (January - July 2006)

A 24-episode anime series adaption by the name of Fate/Stay Night was created by Studio Deen and aired in Japan between January 6 and June 16, 2006. An OVA created by Studio Deen and was released in Japanese theaters on January 23, 2010.

Fate/Kaleid liner Prisma (2013)

Anime adaptation of the Hiroshi Hiroyama's manga series.

Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya 2wei! (2014)

It's the sequel to Fate/Kaleid liner Prisma and introduces Chloe von Einzbern.


Fate/Stay Night (February 2006)

A manga series adaptation also called Fate/Stay Night illustrated by Nishiwaki Datto was serialized on February 2006 and December 2012 in Kadokawa Shoten's Shōnen Ace magazine.

Fate/Kaleid liner Prisma Liner (2007)

Living a normal life, Illyasviel von Einzbern wishes that she could be something more in life. Enter the powerful Magical Ruby Staff, fresh off of deserting Rin due to constant feuding between it's former master and her teammate and who is looking for a new person to align itself with. Offered the chance to become a powerful magical girl who will be the defender of all that is right not only in this dimension, but in the alternate dimensions as well, Illyasviel accidentally "accepts" the contract by grabbing the staff in anger and becomes a magical girl.

Unlimited Blade Works (January 2010)

An Anime film called Unlimited Blade Works written by Takuya Sato and directed by Yuji Yamaguchi was released on January 23, 2010 and had a run time is 105 minutes.


Fate/Prototype (December 2011)

An OVA called Fate/Prototype written by Makoto Uezu and directed by Seiji Kishi was released on December 31, 2011 and had a run time of 12 minutes.
