Celty gets intimate with the Slasher
During the night in Ikebukuro, Celty chases after a mysterious man holding a briefcase to his chest. With her scythe drawn out, her job is simply to retrieve the package for the client. However, during the job, she is attacked by surprise from an unknown assailant who is referred to by people as the Slasher. With a katana through her arm, the Slasher knocks off her helmet as the man is able to escape from the situation. Celty notices her wound was shouting at her, calling her a monster. The man who stole the briefcase also shouts out monster as we see Masaomi and Mikado cornered by a group of Yellow Scarves and use the cry for help as a distraction to escape. Masaomi wonders why the city is so dark and mysterious and he reflects on current affairs.
When Celty gets home, she asks Shinra if he knows anything about what might have happened. Shinra tries to figure it out as Celty worries that it might have been an alien attack; something that Shinra can't figure out if she's joking or not. The next morning, Masaomi walks home with Anri and Mikado as he thinks about how cute Anri is and how she is better off without him. He fells for her the moment she saw her and Seiji arguing the first day after school and tries to horn in. He also is shown helping Anri get away from one of their teachers, Takashi Nasujima, who was making advances on her. Masaomi tries to woo Anri but ends up wrestling with Mikado. At the park, the three eat ice cream as Masaomi warns Anri that Nasujima did have a relationship last year with a student Haruna Niekawa who transferred out. He assures her though that he and Mikado would protect her.
Mikado asks bout the girls that were bullying her as he deduces correctly that they were from her middle school and someone used to be around to stick up for her. Anri explains that her friend Mika Harima disappeared a few days before school started, stating she was going on a journey to recover from a broken heart. Mikado tries to convince her that Mika is fine when Anri also says that Mika was stalking Seiji, which provides explanations over a few things as of late. Mikado and Masaomi both gather that Mika was using Anri to make herself look better, something Anri knows about and admits to being a leech as well. Mikado tells her that she wasn't and she has the power to be her own woman as she agrees. She thanks the two for their help and leaves.
Elsewhere in Ikebukuro, Shuji Niekawa is asking people about who the toughest person in Ikebukuro is. The group of ganguro high schoolers talk about the Headless Rider and then mention how the Dollars are the toughest in the city. Another group of thugs mention how Simon and Izaya are pretty badass. However, they all agree that Shizuo Heiwajima is truly the toughest man in the city.
As Masaomi heads home himself, he laments on how he cannot let his best friend see the darkness Ikebukuro has to offer and will protect Mikado from anything. However, he feels that with Mikado by his side, he is less lonely and more courageous about facing problems and life in general. He stops by the corner of a hospital where he looks up at the window of Saki Mikajima, a girl he knows but feels odd about going to see. Saki sees him out the window and thanks him for coming to see her even if he doesn't actually come inside. Masaomi continues home before he is intercepted by a group from the Yellow Scarves demanding something from him.
Mikado wanders the streets after getting some groceries as he sees Seiji with a girl. Rushing after them, thinking the girl is Mika, he stops the two and finds out he was wrong. He asks Seiji why he was acting so weird and he should come back. Seiji appears to have no desire to and not to interfere with any activities he has with the girl he is with. The two walk off as Mikado notices Masaomi getting pushed into an alley by the Scarves. He rushes in to help Masaomi and encounters the thugs. It is shown that all of this was a flashback as the events from the start of the episode repeat themselves with Masaomi and Mikado evading the thugs. The Scarves chase them but are met and attacked by the Slasher instead.
Masaomi jokes about the situation as he finally heads home. At the hospital, Saki is visited by someone who is shown to be Izaya. Izaya asks if Masaomi has been by which Saki replies that he was there earlier, outside the window where he always is. In her hands, there is a cell phone with a picture of her and Masaomi, indicating that she is his girlfriend and she wound up in the hospital as a result of something Izaya had a say in.
The episode is narrated by Masaomi.
