Fairy Tail is a shōnen manga series written and illustrated by Hiro Mashima, well known for his work on the series Rave Master. Fairy Tail was first published on August 23, 2006, in Weekly Shōnen Magazine.

Volume 24 is bundled with a DVD that has a summary of selected characters.
Volume 26 is bundled with an omake bonus story (Fairy Hill Hills), a Happy collectible strap, and a DVD of Welcome to Fairy Hills OVA, フェアリーテイル.
Volume 27 is bundled with the Fairy Academy: Yankee-Kun and Yankee-Chan (妖精学園ヤンキーくんとヤンキーちゃん)'s omake manga story and DVD.

Plot

Fairy Tail focuses on the adventures of the Fairy Tail Guild, one of many organizations of magic users who take on jobs of a wide variety, anything from rescue missions to finding lost books. The stars of the series are Lucy Heartfilia, a young girl who has dreamed of joining Fairy Tail and has the ability to summon out spirits to fight for her, and Natsu Dragneel, a young man who is a Dragon Slayer mage and is capable of controlling fire spells. They are commonly accompanied by the other members of their team, Happy, a winged cat who speaks and was hatched from an egg, Erza Scarlet, the strongest woman in Fairy Tail who has the power to change into any kind of magical armor to give her a wide variety of powers for whatever situation may arise, and Gray Fullbuster, an exhibitionist who serves as Natsu's friendly rival and controls ice spells. These five make up only a very small part of Fairy Tail, but they have formed a team that has quickly gained notoriety around their world.

Together, this team takes on jobs given to the guild, ranging from large missions such as retrieving legendary magical weapons, to small jobs such as serving as temporary waiters for a restaurant. However no matter what mission they take on the guild usually finds itself being thrown into one chaotic situation after another as the Magical Council keeps trying to find a way to squash out the guild and the mythical dark alliance of guilds known as the Balam Alliance searches for the keys to this world's destruction. Then of course there are the threats from within the guild itself such as the guild master's grandson Laxus trying to take control, enemies from the past such as Erza's former friend turned vessel for evil Jellal, and the mystery of what happened to Natsu's mentor when he mysteriously disappeared years ago. But no matter what threats come their way the members of Fairy Tail always stay true to their code to protect each other and always celebrate every mission afterward with a joyful party (that usually turns into a fight).

The major protagonists are members of the titular Fairy Tail guild.

	The main female protagonist and viewpoint character of the series. Lucy is a celestial wizard who joins Natsu and Happy's guild, Fairy Tail. She can use her Gate Keys to summon various celestial spirits to aid her in battle and other tasks, she is also skilled with a whip which she occasionally uses to fight alongside her comrades.
	Natsu Dragneel (ナツ・ドラグニル Natsu Doraguniru) Hair Color: Pink, Eye Color: Black Primary Magic: Fire Dragon Slayer Magic Gender: Male
	The main male protagonist. Natsu, also known as "Salamander", is an excitable guy on a mission to find his adoptive "father" Igneel, a fire dragon who disappeared years ago. He makes use of fire Dragon Slayer magic, and he is able to "eat" fire to amplify his own powers, though he cannot eat his own fire. Natsu suffers from extreme motion sickness in moving vehicles.

	Natsu's partner, Happy, is an Exceed who can magically grow wings from his back and fly. He lives and travels alongside Natsu as his closest companion.
	Gray Fullbuster (グレイ・フルバスター Gurei Furubasutā) Hair Color: Black, Eye Color: Black Age: 18, Primary Magic: Ice-Maker Magic Gender: Male
	Gray is an Ice-Maker wizard who can usually be found fighting with Natsu. Due to how he was trained to use ice magic, he often strips his clothes subsconciously.
	Erza Scarlet (エルザ・スカーレット Eruza Sukāretto) Hair Color: Red, Eye Color: Brown Age: 19, Primary Magic: "The Knight" (Requip Magic) Gender: Female
	Also known as "Titania", Erza is a master of re-quip magic, which allows her to magically change her armor and weapons in battle. She is an S-Class wizard and is considered the most powerful female member of the Fairy Tail guild.
	Wendy Marvell (ウェンディ・マーベル Wendi Māberu) Hair Color: Blue, Eye Color: Brown Age: 12, Primary Magic: Wind Dragon Slayer Magic Gender: Female
	A former Caitshelter member and a Wind Dragon Slayer who joins Natsu's group after the Nirvana Arc.

	Wendy's partner whose precognition ability allows Natsu, Happy, and Wendy gain entrance to Edolas.

	She joins Fairy Tail after the Tower of Heaven Arc. Juvia is water mage who can change her body into water.
	Gajeel Redfox (ガジル・レッドフォックス Gajiru Reddofokkusu) Hair Color: Black, Eye Color: Red (originally green) Primary Magic: Iron Dragon Slayer Magic Gender: Male
	He is an Iron Dragon Slayer who is a former Phantom Lord member. Gajeel joins Fairy Tail along with Juvia.
	Pantherlily (パンサーリリー Pansārirī) Fur Color: Black, Eye Color: Brown Primary Magic: Aera Gender: Male
	An Exceed who is a former Edolas soldier and now, he is Gajeel's partner.

Supporting Characters

	Makarov Dreyar (マカロフ・ドレアー Makarofu Doreā)
	The Fairy Tail guild master who considers the guild members his own children. He is a short old man, but easily the most powerful member of Fairy Tail, and one of the ten wizard saints, the most powerful wizards recognized by the Magic Council.

	She is the poster girl for Fairy Tail and supports her guild.

	Romeo is the son of the fourth guild master, Macao Conbolt. He sees Natsu as a major role model, and learns fire magic and dresses like him.
	Mavis Vermilion (メイビス・ヴァーミリオン Meibisu Vāmirion) Hair Color: Blonde, Eye Color: Green Primary Magic: ? Gender: Female
	The founder and first guild master of Fairy Tail. Though she died years ago, she resides on Tenrou Island as a ghost, only visible to those who wear the mark of Fairy Tail. She first reveals herself to protect the members of Fairy Tail on Tenrou Island from the black dragon Achnologia, and later comes to the Grand Magic Games to cheer on Fairy Tail. Though dead, it appears she is still able to perform magic.

Jellal Fernandes - A fallen mage who preaches about freedom and a former friend of Erza.
Jose Porla - He is the Phantom Guild Master who opposes Fairy Tail.
Zeref - A legendary black magician, who is regarded as the origin of the magic.
Hades - He is the guild master of Grimoire Heart.
