Fairy Tail Vol. 1 JPN

Fairy Tail is written by Hiro Mashima, well known for his work on the series Rave Master. The series was first published on August 23, 2006, in Weekly Shonen Magazine, where it still runs.

Lucy Heartphilia was an ordinary girl who had a dream: to join the famed magical guild of Fairy Tail. She receives that chance when, quite by accident, she encounters one of its members, Natsu Dragnil. Now, she's off on wild adventures with Natsu while battling all sorts of creatures and wicked mages, as well as meeting up with a cast of wild and colorful people.

Publication History

Kodansha is the publisher of Fairy Tail in Japan. Fairy Tail first appeared in Weekly Shonen Magazine on August 23, 2006. The first tankobon volume was released on December 12, 2006. Currently, 25 volumes have been released, with the latest being published on February 17, 2011. There are currently 228 chapters.

In 2008, a special crossover with the series Flunk Punk Rumble was released in Weekly Shonen Magazine.

The official guidebook, Fairy Tail , was released on May 17, 2010.

Del Rey was the first publisher of Fairy Tail in North America, with the cooperation of the Kodansha company. They licensed the first twelve volumes, with the first being printed on March 25, 2008, and printed the twelfth on September 2010. Kodansha USA will resume publication of Fairy Tail on May, 2011, with the thirteenth volume.

Alterations

Certain jokes and puns in Japanese had to be re-translated for English-speaking audiences.

The spelling of certain character names is at odds with the spelling used in the Fairy Tail anime.

Characters

Lucy Heartphilia ルーシイ・ハートフィリア
The main female protagonist of Fairy Tail. Lucy is the cheerful, upbeat newcomer to the Fairy Tail guild, a guild which she has dreamed of entering for a long time. Lucy isn't above using her feminine charms to beguile people, but often her charms fall short of actually convincing people. Lucy uses Celestial Keys to summon spirits to do her bidding.

Natsu Dragnil ナツ・ドラグニル
The main male protagonist of Fairy Tail. Natsu is an excitable guy who is on a mission to find his adoptive "father", the dragon Dragnil. Natsu is easily excitable, but unfortunately summons from motion sickness in moving vehicles. He makes use of Dragon Slayer magic, specifically that of a Fire Dragon, and he is able to "eat" fire to amplify his own powers.

Happy ハッピー
A talking blue cat and Natsu's closest companion. Happy has the power of flight, and often assists Natsu and Lucy on their various missions. He also likes to make comments about various happenings during missions, or backs up Natsu.

Grey Fullbuster グレイ・フルバスター
A member of Fairy Tail. He and Natsu are rivals, although they have worked with each other on occasion in the past. Grey has a tendency to take of his clothes with no warning, as a result of his training as a child. He makes use of "Ice Maker" magic.

Erza Scarlet エルザ・スカーレット
A member of Fairy Tail, licensed to undertake S-Class Missions. She is a no-nonsense, very serious person, although she does care for her fellow Fairy Tail members. She makes use of Armour based magic.
