    Fairy Tail? Over my Gum Gum body!

    Ever since Bleach ended as an anime I figured Fairy Tail was more popular and took its spot to join One Piece and Naruto in the trinity.

    I think Soul Eater had the potential to be a long running shounen...it was sorta like bleach and naruto combined (in a sense) a shame the tv series went in a diff direction that the manga....who knows they might pull an FMA brotherhood on that show.

    As for fairy tail, almost everybody i know to have seen it has called it just above mediocre at best so i have neva been in a rush to check it out but someday i will.....just hasn't seemed like something to go out and rush to see and after how naruto and bleach went i'm not sure i'm even ready to watch another hundred+ episode running series unless it feels unique....but hey saying all that im still staying open minded about possible shows, just gotta be weary on what you spend your hours on watching

    The HST is top ranking Shonen Jump titles, Fairy Tail is from a different magazine (so it don't count)

    Next HST, who knows!?

    I do hope he get more rest then that

    Oda did have time off, two years ago. (also he is known to tell jokes, so this might be one of them) Anyway, Oda said he is done with manga after he get done with One Piece.

    Here is Oda's desk

    the top manga have become the forerunners in halo, they must pass the mantle of responsibility down every generation:

    1st Gen: Dragon Ball Z

    2nd Gen: One Piece

    3rd Gen: ???

    Wit the pace One Piece is going, they shall hold the mantle a long time xD

    And yay my question was answered! :D

    I can only hope that JoJo's Bizarre Adventure anime does well enough that they continue animating it past Parts 1 and 2. It is one of the longest running Jump titles (1987-2002 Weekly Shonen and monthly Ultra afterwards, still ongoing). The fact that it doesn't get recognition outside of Japan is criminal, but that's probably due to it being a copyright minefield. It and Hunter x Hunter are leagues better than Fairy Tail, Naruto and Bleach. And the HxH manga has its major problems with Togashi's constant hiatuses.

    My feelings on FT are mixed. I've read a bunch of the manga but am over half of the current chapters behind, I think. But I didn't make it past episode 10 of the anime because I thought it was just poor. I'm sure it's improved but I'm SO FAR BEHIND already.

    But really what I want to say is that dammit Tom, download some fansubs of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure's current anime and do some commentary on that. 2 months/9 episodes on and nobody has even tried to get it legit streamed. You love making wrestling comparisons, you'd get a kick out of early JJBA.

    I watched FairyTail until episode 62 i believe...NO NO NO NO. it can't fill that space..whatever problems we had with bleach it was still far above fairytail. I like the idea of fairytail I like the main characters and the setting and such but its wayy too light for me the excution of the series is poor to me. I'm not super violent but i at least think they should have blood in the anime its kinda ridiculous that someone gets slammed int rocks or cut with sharp objects and they just have dirt on their face.

    I have a feeling something really original is gonna come along sooner or later and feel that spot.

    I really wish soul eater got the chance its a great manga and the anime was alright except when it went down the same path as the original FMA and made its own ending.

    You never know about Oda's schedule. He was able to find a wife and have kids while working on this series.

    BLEACH has been confirmed to be ending, but I haven't heard any official word about a NARUTO finale. I wouldn't be surprised though. This war arc is summing up so many loose ends.

    I like FAIRY TAIL, but it seems to be a tad too similar to ONE PIECE.

    As much I love Fairy Tail, it doesn't have that impact like Dragon Ball or the other three Shonen titles. The popular shonen series all make their big debut in America. Toonami immensely boosted Dragon Ball, and when 4kids try to do the same with One Piece, they fail. Newcomers, veteran, and fans of all ages will know Dragon Ball is. Fairy Tail only aired on the Funimation channel, and not everyone has cable or internet.

    In addition to publicity, the anime needs to win its audience and make them loyal. Fairy Tail doesn't have that staying power like DBZ or One Piece. I see people dropping Fairy Tail faster than Dragon Ball, One Piece, and etc. (Though, One Piece is more popular in Japan than the U.S.) Plus, it's execution in story's objective and characters are bland enough. New folks keep confusing Fairy Tail with One Piece and saying it's a big rip off. Though, like what sickVisionz and the rest of the crew said, it's recycling shonen material and being inspired by popular, successful series.

    A possible show in the HST is Gintama, an anime that has multiple genres from action and drama to slapstick and parody. It's like Family Guy and South Park mixed in with old school samurai with aliens. Yet, Gintama series never got dub, but its first movie was dub interestingly enough. Gintama is over 200 episodes and an ongoing manga series. The only problems that stand in its way is translating the pop culture jokes. These jokes often poke fun at Japanese politicians. No one will understand the jokes.

    Right now with the current anime series, none of them are big enough like One Piece and its companions. I think this concept will die because anime is more becoming accessible through internet, but the internet is not enough. The power of television has the potential to make one series big like DBZ.

    @Destinyheroknight:

    Fairy Tail is from a different magazine (so it don't count)

    I made that same mistake. It has the characteristics and stereotypes. Regardless, it will never be one of HST.

    @Donwun:

    If Soul Eater didn't start the anime sooner so it won't catch to its manga counterpart, it would have done better. I feel that Soul Eater's audience is narrow and limited. You can recommend Dragon Ball and One Piece to anyone regardless of gender and age.

    I have a feeling something really original is gonna come along sooner or later and feel that spot.

    Nothing's original. A new series will always recycle the old stuff. It'll look new, but it's just a gimmick. Take Bleach for an example. It was damn popular with its use of Shinigamis helping the spirits cross over and fighting Hollows. In the end, it was just a DBZ clone with swords.

    Edit:

    Replace modified version with gimmick

    When those three series end we won't have another trilogy and those series won't be replaced, at least not that early. I mean, maybe in a near future (three or five years after One Piece, Naruto and Bleach end) a new shonen manga will become as popular as this series are right now, but it won't be Fairy Tail or any other shonen that's on stores right now. If Fairy Tail have to be as big as this three (and Dragon Ball), it would be already.

    @takashichea: I agree but i dont agree about the originality point. Regardless of similarities that all shohen manga have they are always different enough to be their own series. I wouldnt call bleach an exact clone of dbz because i mean they arent destroying worlds and fighting aliens and such. Something original is like death notee even though it was short and sweet. To say nothing original is not gonna happen again is kind of losing hope dont you think?

    I think Blue exorcist had the potential but the story seems to be lacking a bit..and the anime also suffered from the Original FMA "lets make up an ending" syndrome.

    Post by YotaruVegeta (595 posts) See mini bio Level 12

    @jj_jackson: Nah, Blue Exorcist isn't going to do it. At least not as an anime.

    @jj_jackson:

    Dang, I was too pessimistic. I do see your point. I just got tired of shonen series since I read a lot of Shonen Jump and Shonen-like manga series two years ago. Things got stale. I finally went out of the genre and explore other anime series a few months ago. I tried Slice of Life, ecchi, and one romance (Natsuyuki Rendezvous). I found I was craving action when comedy wasn't enough for me. Went back to shonen to find something I haven't read, but I couldn't find anything good without too much repetitive stuff.

    I'm hoping a new series will come along and does a better job of distinguishing itself from its predecessors.

    I like what @tximinoman said:

    One Piece is setting the bar too high for HST. These series are just too long and keep running. I see HST as an endurance run for shonen series. It got to keep running to keep its crown. Once One Piece ends, hopefully the standards for HST changes. I would love to see shorter series. It's such a shame that shows like Fullmetal Alchemist and Death Note are excellent series and have ended.

    I agree that Blue Exorcist had potential. It died because it had an early anime adaptation and too much hype. Plus, it has Christianity, Buddhist, and Judaism references that people stated it has mixed up on. I haven't read the manga yet.

    Last I recall, wasn't Bleach dethroned from its perch among the HST by Toriko earlier in the year due to the former's loss of popularity?

    Im a big fan of history's strongest deciple, but it might not count.

    Post by Petiew (244 posts) See mini bio Level 14
    The big three are shonen jump series. Fairy Tail isn't normally included since it runs in a different magazine.
    @Dream: I'm not sure exactly, but Toriko is at least very close to Bleach in sales. There was some kind of Shonen Jump game announced recently and the three main series they used on their announcment were DragonBall, One Piece and Toriko. Toriko looks to be the next big manga they're going to push.

    I still think that Toriko would be apart of next big 3.

    If you check some of the issues front covers, you see Ichigo in the back, while Toriko & Naruto & Luffy are in the front, I think WSJ is probably trying to boost Toriko's sales, b/c it already surpassed Bleach in rankings and now, in sales.
