Spring is upon us again! Watch this space as we view new pilots from this season, and determine where they fit on the highly-scientific Rock-or-Suck Scale…

This episode’s packed with wizards, fairies, dragons and (a surprising number of) talking cats, but… it’s the episode number that strikes me most. Long, ongoing serials are always pulled between two interests when it comes to this stuff. How do you make the diehard mainstays feel validated while still keepings things accessible to newbies. ‘ONE PIECE Episode #636’ simply sounds a lot less inviting than ‘FAIRY TAIL Series 2 Episode #1” - - especially if you’re somebody like me, who’s only caught intermittent episodes, so far. I’d like to pick this series up without needing to do the homework.

I don’t know if this is really much of a jumping-on point, though. A little added research reveals that it’s actually Episode #176, and was labeled as such in Japan, so I’ll presume the ‘Series 2’ business was a local branding choice. If that’s the case, the localization really should’ve been taken a step further. A little editing, and this could’ve worked like the ‘first’ episode of DRAGON BALL Z. A ‘modular’ pilot.

As is, the cast has ballooned so far outward that it’s just impossible to tell which witch is which (or wizard, or whatever the term in this universe is). And the lore’s reached that stage where the character might as well be speaking a different language for all its invocations. To be clear, though, I’m not wagging my finger at the show itself. It’d be boring series if the canvas kept getting erased over five seasons and there was nothing actually built up by episode #164. I just question what the use was in the ‘rebrand.’

Would any of you more seasoned FAIRY TAIL fanatics care to clear this up for me?

Watch "King of the Dragons" and decide for yourself.

This "Rebranding choice" struck me as weird considering the break that Fairy Tale took and are now coming back into happened mid-arc. Sure it occurred right after a "major" battle and right before another "major" revelation (i.e. the whole dragon story). But this seems like a really tough turning up point. With the introduction of this arc they really brought in a lot of new characters (basically every major guild in the show from the past episodes AND ones never seen before) and they tried to write ways in which character X knows or knew Z about character Y which cause this great big web of character-relationships/histories that don't add too much to the plot but they do to understand character motivations. But this is a shonen anime so they will no doubt use plenty of flashbacks or explanatory monologues.

The number change was um dumb. Maybe a accident an they left of the other 2 numbers at 1st or something ? Tho i was pleased it mostly picked up where the last season left off.

Surely it had nothing to do with the animation change.I mean any reason to drop the series ongoing number seems dumb.Long ongoing shonen series fans would not want it. An new people for a long series will want to start at the start. So labeling this number 1 is a silly an week comic book trick. That is all to often used to fool people into buying more. Except you dont buy this you just watch it. So the number count change was silly.

This is episode 176.

The anime went on hiatus for a year and now it's back with a new character designer and animation studio (Bridge instead of Satellite) but everything else has remained the same. Because of the change some websites are calling it a new series.

Also, on the off chance you really are interested in picking Fairy Tail up, here's what you need to know:

Basic Facts

  • The series is set in the country Fiore, in a world called Earthland.
  • Like in Harry Potter, there are normal people and wizards who are naturally magical.
  • Each wizard tends to specialize in one type of magic; fire, ice, summoning, transformation, etc.
  • Wizards form guilds and take on job requests from the public to earn a living.
  • The talking cats are called Exceeds. They can sprout wings and fly.
  • The big bads are the dark wizard Zeref, who is apparently the source of all evil, and Achnologia, the only dragon known to still exist.

Dragon Slayers

  • Natsu and several others are "Dragon Slayers" - wizards taught Dragon Slaying Magic by dragons.
  • All of the dragons in Earthland mysteriously disappeared before the start of the story.
  • Each Slayer has a different type of Dragon Slayer Magic (Natsu's being fire)
  • Some Slayers can use two types (Natsu absorbed lightning from another Slayer and can use fire + lightning)
  • Slayers replenish themselves by eating their element (Natsu eats fire, but cannot eat his own fire)
  • There are also God Slayers. They use more powerful magic than Dragon Slayers. It's unclear where this magic came from as no gods have been introduced.

Current Events

  • Fairy Tail (the guild Natsu and co. are part of) was the most powerful wizard guild 7 years ago.
  • Fairy Tail lost its title because the powerful members (basically Natsu and co.) were frozen for 7 years. This caused a 7-year timeskip in the story.
  • To regain its title, Fairy Tail has joined the "Grand Magic Games" to compete against the other guilds. It's basically the magical olympics, but we're at the end which is just fighting.
  • Beneath the Grand Magic Games something much more nefarious is going on, which we're now starting to dig into.

There you go Tom, I did the research for you. That's pretty much all you need to know to jump in at this point :)

They should have use the same numbering since they're just picking off from where they left. Same thing happened to Magi.

Animation

The animation style is quite different. I agree with my partner, Marshal, that the old art style was pretty cute. For the new animation, it's more fluid and crisp. The coloring is like the movie. I find the new character designs focus more on the eyes and makes the bust and hips less emphasizing.

In case, Tom doesn't cover the series. Visit the Fairy Tail Discussion (Anime)

Yeah, that be confusing for newcomers. Crunchyroll should have continued with the episodes numbers

Any who, I really don't like this arc and it make me dislike Fairy Tail. I was kind of hoping they just skip it :)

You totally should have written a review-rito. Even though you're out of the country. It would've been honorary.

I'm interested in checking this out. I'm coming to realize that ironically I like a good fight scene but I really dislike standard shonen battle anime, the genre that delivers the most fights on a per episode basis. The ones I watch now fall into 3 groups:

  1. They mix up the tropes a little bit like Hunter x Hunter, although it seems like the longer it goes on the more and more generic shonen it's becoming along with the fights being less and less impressive on the animation end.
  2. They have awesome animation in basically every episode like Sword Art Online.
  3. I got into them early in my anime life when the tropes were new and fresh and now I feel some weird compulsion to finish them even though I dislike the bulk of the episode like Naruto and formerly Bleach

My main gripe with the original was that the animation didn't deliver a payoff good enough to make the insufferable elements tolerable. With a new studio involved maybe that will change. Plus I always did like Happy.

Calling it series 2 episode 1 makes little sense since "series 1" stopped right in the middle of a story arc. At Least Naruto went on break at a natural stopping point.
