@secretzfan: It doesn't really deviate from the normal Shonen pattern and the characters are cliche.
Love this series, in my top three of all time. The characters are unique and well designed for there archetypes, and the art-style is cute enough to fit the humorous undertones, and serious looking/realistic enough for the serious parts of the plot. The plot is pretty classic, but not so much generic as it seems.
