They're just sitting pretty there, aren't they?
They're just sitting pretty there, aren't they?

Anime Los Angeles actually happened a couple weeks back, but we held off on posting my interview with fantastic funnyman Spike Spencer until today to get the doubly-auspicious timing right. Spike’s best known role in anime is, of course, Shinji in EVANGELION and I’m just now about to head off to catch an LA screening of EVANGELION 2.0: YOU CAN (NOT) ADVANCE. Unfortunately, we aren’t getting the triply-auspicious trifecta because this won’t actually be the American dub… but close enough, right? There was some confusion last week that led me to miss the premiere of the GANTZ movie, but you lunatics have my guarantee that I won’t be missing this for the world.

You might recall that I did an (excessively long) review of the EVA 1.0 Blu Ray last summer with my pal, Metal Mike. I’ve been waiting almost half a year now to find out what will happen next in this rebuilt now that Kaworu has been introduced at a much earlier point in the plot’s timeline. My understanding is that these new movies will be taking events in a progressively different direction as they go along.  I’ve heard talk of a fourth (or fifth?) pilot joining the regular crew, as well as drastically more menacing reinterpretations of the angels. Also, my dirty mind is curious to see how much farther the sexual tension between Shinji and Misato will be pushed, since it was a lot more blatant in the last movie.

Well, I’m off. Stay tuned for my on-camera review of this flick!

I'm ready to see this as well. Just recently watched 1.11 and found it to be pretty good. With the direction the rebuild is going right now I might actually end up liking the series. But as for now I hated the episodes and End of Evangelion was ok so I need to be impressed further.

As far as I understand it these rebuild movies are going in this manner
  • Evangelion 1.0
  • Evangelion 2.0
  • Evangelion 3.0
  • Evangelion FINAL
That is providing there has been some news I missed.

I could probably write a thesis about the potential of these movies and what it could mean for a finale. My only concern is if this will all just be another roundabout way of coming to the same end as End of Evangelion. I get that because of the way they followed episodes.

I'm actually a little curious about what the introduction of Kaji will mean for what's been happening with the change in Shinji's relationship with Misato. When Kaji appeared an in the anime is when much of the Misato and Shinji tension lost steam until his death. I can say I'll be disappointed if that all gets pushed away.
Kaji's whole story purpose was to reveal Lilith to Misato and make her realize the conspiracy around her, but she started these movies knowing that secret. Kaji's plot purpose has been removed.

Mari Illustrious is also being introduced and she's suppose to have some kind of past with Kaji.

Have fun!!

@haseo_yashimora:
DVDs can be pre-ordered now on Amazon and is released on March 29th.

A tip on pre-ordering. If you pre-order things on Amazon at any time. After you placed your order and the price drops for whatever reason. You will only be charged for the lowest price it goes. At least, that's what it said to me when I pre-ordered Summer Wars.

Speaking as a someone who saw it a week ago, you'll love it the and the more people you have in the theater the better it will be.

@Tom_Pinchuk: I hope you like it.  2.0 was exactly what I was hoping these movies would be.

@ryozakiL: That's probably the first time I've heard someone compare watching a good TV show to being raped or having to face their rapist...

You should probably read the cover-story article in Otaku USA magazine's April 2011 issue on Rebuild of Evangelion 2.0.

This movie Rocks, I saw it almost when it came out, and I loved it, Shinji grows a pair, and that more than a reason to see it. The scene with the Falling Angel is perfectly displayed, the music and the action fuse in harmony.

Just so long as they don't mess with Asuka's introduction too much, that's such a great episode.

You may be slightly dissapointed. Asuka plays a much different part throughout the movies
