So You Can (Not) Advance is great for fans of the franchise but not that great for people unfamiliar with the franchise....

So in other words the pope is a Catholic and the sky is blue.

I was completely underwhelmed by the first movie, and have no real interest in this.  I used to really like Eva, but I think that ship has sailed for me.

The implication of Mari Makinami Illustrious being in the same image as you in your bathtub is almost inappropriate. At least you have your clothes on! Speaking of Mari, was she singing during that very first scene right before she fights the Third Angel? The song she sings in the Japanese film is a significantly cultural Japanese song that can actually be considered an allegory for what NGE is all about, so I was wondering how the English translation would approach that little bit.

I agree that the casual watcher shouldn't start here. It's imperative that people watching this start with the first film at least, Neon Genesis Evangelion being the macrocosm it is between the anime and film series. Like the Kara no Kyoukai anime film series in Japan, it's intended to be a very continuously woven work and none of the films can really stand alone. Watching Evangelion 2.0 without any prior experience with the franchise is like reading a book after important moments of exposition - it won't feel complete.

Nice review! I'll be sure to pick it up once it hits shelves on Blu-ray.

I did not watch the EVA anime, so my introduction to this franchise was You are (Not) Alone. I wonder if I am going to be lost when I see it...
I am not that okay with the over the top fan-service though, I wonder if the Dub will change anything... The EVAs look amazing though! Kudos on the review Tom

@sora_thekey: As long as you watched the first film in the series, you should be able to appreciate this entirely. In fact, having watched the TV anime won't help you with any background past this film, anyway, since it's starting to diverge significantly from the path that the TV anime series did. They intend for everything past the 3rd movie to lead to a completely new ending.

Nice review. :D I'm diggin' the techno EVA theme in the background. I was thinking of watching this, and I have mixed feelings. :P But I'm thinking of watching it when I get around to it.

Tom, I hate to tell you this, but revealing outfits and panty shots of a 16 year old is only scratching the surface of fan service. If you intend on sticking this anime thing out, you're going to have to be a man and take it!
As if a characters age ever meant anything in anime to begin with anyway. Nine times out of ten a 14 year old looks more like an 18 year old.

Heaven forbid you ever watch an episode of Strike Witches. You might punch a hole through your screen.
sickVisionz moderator on Feb. 9, 2011 at 4:34 p.m.
I totally agree with Tom's views on it not really being a standalone product, or if so an extremely confusing one and the out of place pop ballad making one of the most intense scenes from the show kinda comical.

I believe that the preview for 3.0 listed up to like unit #8.  My hope is that all of these pilots being introduced means that there will be crazy insane fights in the last two films and their sheer number means that not everyone has to come out alive in order to keep the cast up.  I wouldn't mind seeing some epic Eva vs Eva free-for-all with the pilots and the dummy plug half bird Eva things from End of Evangelion.

As far as fan service on Asuka, you haven't seen anything yet in the grand scheme of anime.  Eva only showing fanservice on high school kids is more restraint than I've seen elsewhere.

So the 4th movie is when all of the AVA fans will begin to scream out in terror... Got it!

There's nothing wrong with fan-service... Just don't take it over the top!

Actually, the 3rd movie itself should be almost entirely new, as well. So they might even be able to begin screaming out in terror, then. I'm actually looking forward to it, even after being ingrained with the original series.

If you have seen Gantz, then you know the bathtub is not a safe place to review things.

About the figurines - this came up on Anime News Network's Hey Answerman column a while back. Basically, you know the quote from Spaceballs from Yogurt? You know the one. That basically applies here, particularly with figurines.

@EquitasInvictus: It's good that you are open to the change! Should we expect volatile screaming from you after you watch it?
EquitasInvictuson Feb. 9, 2011 at 5:28 p.m.
@sora_thekey: I assure you I won't be reacting in screaming at all. At worst, I'll either twitch or cringe!

I'm new to the series too and I didn't find it that bad and as far as the fan service goes, they put it all into the fist third of the movie so it's kind of condensed.  If you want to see a clip of the dub and dealing with fan service Click Here (click 2 more videos and pictures and then Eva Amazon trailer)

Also I did find some of the J-pop they used in the most dramatic scene pull me out of the movie because I felt like I was watching Eva but I was listening to the soundtrack of K-On!!

You should have ended the vid by saying "Now witness the firepower of this fully armed and operational video clip"

I completely agree with you. Only after i saw the entire series and movies did i understand basically what was going on the entire time. But in my option it's hard to even understand Evangelion 100% lol.  Also to those who do...i am impressed.

It's funny you say that, since that is a very accurate statement.

One of the songs used in 2.0's climax, "Tsubasa wo Kudasai," is actually covered by Houkago Tea Time  in one of their soundtracks.

Thanks, I knew the song sounded familiar!  Glad to hear that I wasn't just slowly going insane at the time!
