Ha ha… what a dumbass.
Some of you lunatics have praised this series for letting Renton actually grow as a character, both inside and outside. While his features do look sharper, I find it darkly amusing that the central threat of this episode - - Renton suffering from a wilderness infection - - arises simply because the kid cut his own arm up in an emotional fit last episode and didn’t realize he ought to put a bandage on it. Other may see this one of those ever-so-hard-to-evade plot holes, but said viewers would be seriously underestimating humans’ capacity for stupidity.
Seriously, think about all the classmates and co-workers you’ve had, and all the stupid things they’ve done. You can explain away anything in a story to people being dumb, if only for fleeting moments.
Speaking of which, I feel pretty stupid for not calling the nature of Eureka’s transformation right off the bat. She’s shedding her human-skin pupae? Well, that actually should’ve been pretty obvious considering how she emerged from the subterranean goo way back when in a very larvae-like state. I probably should’ve been even more obvious given how she’s supposed to be part of the same species as all those swarms of flying protozoa.
As accepting as Renton’s been so far (and, good lord, is the kid a good sport) he better hope, wish and pray that her mutation doesn’t progress any further. Their relationship already hangs on such tenuous thread… I don’t think it can survive inhuman physiology.
We’re getting down to the nitty gritty and, while this did certainly feel like the calm before some sort of storm, I’m just a little apprehensive that this may run into the same difficulties that mega-shows usually run into when it comes to the ol' climax. That is, you really do need a double-sized episode or a movie to deliver on the sense of build-up that this many episodes has ramped to. We’ve got the sucidial battle against the fleet coming sure, but I have the suspicion that this will go the obfuscating route and devote the penultimate chapter to Renton simply playing catch-up with his big sis or some such.
