Erza is a powerful S-Class mage and one of the main characters in Fairy Tail. She's part of Team Natsu and uses Requip magic to change into different suits of armor, each with it's own unique properties.
As a child Erza was enslaved and forced to help build The Tower of Heaven. She was blinded in her right eye after being injured while building the tower. During that time she became friends with a boy named Jellal who taught her about magic. One day she, Jellal and the other slaves tried to escape from their captors but were overpowered by their magic. It is then Erza's magic abilities awaken and is able to kill all of her enemies. After this she lost Jellal in the scuffle and went looking for him. When she found him he was not the same. He became influenced by the dark mage Zeref and became evil. After knocking Erza unconscious he sent her flying across the ocean, and forced the free slaves to continue building the Tower of Heaven.
After gaining regaining conscious she went looking for the Fairy Tail Guild in hopes of asking them for help. When she arrived at the guild she was welcome in with open arms. She then started to wear armor as it made her feel safe. Later on the guild master Makarov took her to Porlyusica to get a artificial eye due to her right eye going blind. As the years went by Erza became an S-Class mage of Fairy Tail, making her one of the four S-Class member of the guild. She become an older sister figure to Natsu and Gray, being the only person able to force the two to get along. Natsu constantly wants to challenge her to a fight to test his strength but so far has not won a battle against her.
The initial idea behind Erza was always to have a female character that Natsu and all the other characters would be afraid of, according to Hiro Mashima. Because of this his initial design of her was much more wild and jungle-girl like, always being accompanied by a pet hawk. Many people have since pointed to her Edolas counterpart, Erza Knightwalker, as a character who resembles her old design. However her look was changed to be a tad more similar to the character Mammii from Monster Soul also created by Mashima. Many of the characters from Fairy Tail resemble or borrow things from Mashima's other works and Erza is no exception. Her name comes from "Eru" a character in a short story Mashima wrote called "Fiary Tale" and her powers resemble those of Leopard from Rave Master (in fact her Flight Armor comes with a pair of leopard ears as a possible reference to this character). Even her gambling talents are reminiscent of Elie, from Rave Master, who herself was a gambling master.
"A person isn't supposed to die for one's friends. One has to live for one's friends. Because that is the path that leads to a happy future."
- Erza Scarlet, Episode 41 and Volume 12, to Natsu Dragneel
"Bury the pain of losing your loved ones into the arms of your friends."
- Erza Scarlet, Episode 68, to Wendy Marvel
"All I need is the power to be able to protect my comrades. So long as I can have the strength to do that, I don't care if I'm weaker than everyone in the world."
- Erza Scarlet, Chapter 236, to Azuma.
Erza usually wears a custom-made Heart Kreuz armor which she only occasionally takes off because she feels uncomfortable and insecure without it. Because she specializes in Requip magic, she has the ability to change not only her armor and weapons but also any of her clothing. Throughout the series she has worn various different costumes and attire fit for the occasion whether it be for a race, a sleepover, or for a beauty pageant. Her favorite outfit to wear is the bunny suit because she finds the ears "cute".
Erza is very strict and impatient who dislikes those who don't reply to her questions immediately. She also criticizes the bad habits and behaviors of her fellow guild members, causing them to apologize, in fear that she would invoke her wrath. But despite her tough persona, she can be clumsy at times and has a very strong sense of justice and pride in being a member Fairy Tail. Although she is "strong, mean and scary" (in Natsu's words), deep down she is kind, warm and full of passion. And throughout the series, as she grew closer to her friends she has become more open and less stern towards them and has come to completely trust and love them. That said, she still maintains her harsh and serious attitude (especially towards Gray and Natsu who always fight) and uses her exceptional leadership qualities to keep everyone in line.
After being away on a mission Erza returns to the guild, and enlists the help of Natsu and Gray (with force) to help her stop the Eisenwald Guild whose leader, Erigor who was planning to use the flue Lullaby. The flute has the ability to steal the souls of whoever listens to it. While on the train she told Lucy and the others of what she heard and Gray told her his story of the encounter a member of the guild. Meanwhile Natsu complains about his motion sickness, which Erza quickly knocks him out to "ease his pain".
Once the train stopped, Erza forgot Natsu was on the train and he was on his way to the next station. After catching up to the train she beat Natsu for falling asleep and discovers a member of the Eisenwald Guild named Kageyama attacked Natsu. They then followed the Kageyama to the Oshibana train station. They think Erigor is going to use the Flute on the town but discovering he has other plans. After Erigor disappears she sends Natsu and Gray to catch Erigor, meanwhile, she and Lucy fight with a the other members of the Guild. Lucy then witnesses Erza Requip ability.
After Gray discovers Erigor true plan he rushes to tell Erza but discovers Erigor has sealed them off with a powerful Tornado surrounding the station which is impossible to go through except for Erigor. Erza soon discovers Kageyama knows how to break the barrier and rushes too find him. They soon find Natsu who just defeated Kageyama. They begin to interrogate him but one of his teammates stabs him from behind to prevent them from figuring out how to leave. Erza rushes to save him but see his wound is pretty deep soon Erza discovers Lucy's Virgo key and uses her ability to dig under the barrier. Once free Natsu rushes to catch Erigor with Erza and the others following him.
Using her energy to drive the four wheeler again she finally finds Natsu who just defeated Erigor. They find Lullaby laying on the ground next to Erigor but Kageyama snatches it from them and heads to the Guild Masters meeting to finish what Erigor started. They soon arrive and discover Makarov convinced him to end his desperate plan. She becomes quite pleased with Makarov after this but freaks out when she finds that Lullaby moves on its own and has turned into a large demon. Erza uses her Requip ability and begins to attack Lullaby with Natsu and Gray. They seal all of Lullaby holes to prevent him from using his ability which makes him furious. She requips again and all three of them finish off Lullaby but destroy the Guild House during the battle which makes all the other Guild Master angry.
When Natsu, Lucy, and Gray go off on an S Class mission on their own, Erza arrives to stop them. She discovers that they are trying to save an island from a curse and a great monster, and at this time Erza had yet to begin to warm up, and she showed how cruel she could be by saying she didn't care what happened to the island. Gray stands up to her and tells her he doesn't care if she punishes or even kills him, that he is going to save this island and stop this monster from coming back. After this she is so shocked that someone stood up to her (which could be the beginning of why she began to warm up to the rest of her guild members) that she decides to help save the island. She uses her Giant Armor along with Natsu's help to destroy the illusion that had been put over the island.
Upon returning home from the Galuna Island Erza and her team learned that their guild had been attacked by the rival guild Phantom Lorde. The guild fights back but their leader Makarov is incapacitated so Erza steps up to serve as the guild leader alongside Mirajane and Cana until he recovers. But Phantom Lorde isn't done attacking yet, their walking guild comes to life and aim's its destructive cannon directly at Fairy Tail. Erza is able to stop the blast by blocking it with her Adamantine Armor, which has the highest defense of any of her armor. After blocking it she falls unconscious before the actual battle begins. She wakes up in time to defeat Aria of the Elemental Four who was in the middle of fighting Natsu.
Once the battle is over and the guild is saved, Erza assist in the cleanup process of their old guild. Through this crisis she has warmed up to the rest of her guild members and is no longer the impersonal and distant warrior she once was.
Erza and her team are given free tickets to an expensive resort, and while spending time in the resort's casino they are attacked by a team of mysterious opponents. Erza quickly discovers that these assailants are her childhood friends and former fellow slaves, Simon, Wally, Shou, and Millianna, come back to recapture their "sister." To spare her friends she agrees to go with them and is taken back to the Tower of Heaven, a building she was held captive in as a child where she was forced to work to build the tower for the purpose of reviving the dark mage Zeref.
While held captive she fights back and frees herself of her restraints, and battles herway through the tower to find Jellal, who was once one of her closest friends as a child in the tower, but was brainwashed and possessed by evil spirits, and was now working to once again rebuild the tower. As she fights through guards she is reunited with Natsu and the rest of her team, but she tells them to go home, that this is something only she can do and does not want to see her friends get hurt and that it has always been her destiny to fight Jellal. As she reveals the truth about her past and Jellal her old friends don't believe her, until Simon comes forward and says she is telling the truth. Shou is overwhelmed by this and he captures Erza in one of his playing cards to protect her, and says he will fight Jellal instead.
As Shou moves through the tower he runs into the leader of Trinity Raven, Ikaruga, who is working for Jellal to help bring back Zeref. She makes short work of Shou, but he still refuses to let Erza free, saying he won't let anything happen to her. However it is soon clear that Ikaruga can attack her even through the card, but Erza is able to fight back and break out of the card. The two of them do battle and Ikaruga makes short work of every armor that Erza summons forth. Eventually Erza thinks about how she has been relying too much on her armor, and she summons out a plain fighting robe that has no extra powers whatsoever, it simply comes with two sets of swords. The two of them charge at each other and in one last clash Erza defeats her.
She finally makes her way to Jellal and after fighting him she gets him pinned down, but when he asks her to finish him off she refuses. She knows that the tower is about to be destroyed by the Magical Council sending a mighty bolt from the sky, and she decides it is her destiny to die alongside him. She holds him one last time as the tower is struck by this mighty attack from above, only to be revealed this was all part of Jellal's plan. The tower was made to absorb this blast so it could be used to summon Zeref, and not only is Erza and Jellal safe but the tower is now glowing ready to be used as his ultimate weapon. Jellal throws Erza to the ground and uses a spell to incapacitate her, but Natsu shows up to save her and take her back to Fairy Tail, leading into the final battle between these two.
Natsu eats some of the magically charged Lachryma that made up the tower and it gave him incredible power for a brief moment, just long enough to defeat Jellal. Erza watched this and realized the burden she had been carrying for eight years was now finally lifted from her shoulders, however this relief didn't last for long. Without Jellal to guide it the magic absorbed in the tower had nowhere to go and was about to explode and take all of them with it. Erza realized she loved her friends too much to see that happen, and she merged her body into the Lachryma of the tower, redirecting that energy away from where it could do any harm and destroying the tower.
Erza awoke withing an abyss, just floating aimlessly. She looked down and saw that she was above her own funeral, where she watched her friends mourning over her, except for Natsu who continued to scream that she wasn't dead, perhaps his own form of grieving. She felt guilty for the misery she was putting her friends through, when a force grabbed her and pulled her back. She awoke in the arms of Natsu who had gone back into the Lachryma and pulled her out of there. After the battle was finally over, all of Erza's childhood friends departed, ready to find out what they had been missing in the world. Erza and the others threw a fire works bash for them as they left. The next day Erza and the others happily returned back to fully rebuilt Fairy Tail Guild.
After the chaos of the past few battles, it is time for the guild members of Fairy Tail to relax with the annual Harvest Festival. This includes the Miss Fairy Tail contest that Erza competed in, dressed in a rather frilly dress to try and get more votes from the crowd. However, unknown to her or the rest of the Guild, Laxus and his team were planning on overthrowing the guild and were going to use this festival as the setting for their coup. The Fairy Tail member Evergreen, who was part of Laxus's forces, used her gorgon like eyes to turn all the members of the contest, including Erza, into stone. Laxus said that the only way they would be freed if the other members agreed to battle one another in a tournament to see who would be the next master of the guild. While the males of the guild fought to save them, Erza was able to break free of this enchantment because she has a fake eye, meaning that since the petrification magic was absorbed through the eye, she only absorbed half of it. Using her fake eye to see she was able to defeat Evergreen without being petrified again, and once she was defeated it freed the other members of their team.
Once Evergreen was out of the way, Erza took the fight strait to Laxus. When she arrived she found Mistgun already fighting him, and saw his mask removed to reveal himself to look just like Jellal. He then left realizing he couldn't let Erza see him like this, but told her that he was not the man she thought he was. She began to fight Laxus but soon realized the entire town was on the verge of being destroyed by a seal set up by Laxus's subordinate Fried Justine known as "The Hall of Thunder." This seal consisted of several bombs that even if destroyed would then electrocute the one who destroyed the bomb. Relying on the psychic powers of Warren, a fellow Fairy Tail member, she sent out a call to all the members of the guild to help her crush each of these bombs, for if even one remained it would destroy the city. Erva took out dozens of these bombs while the rest of the guild members only took out one, but when it was all done the town was saved even though Erza now was out of commission from all the electric shocks the bombs delivered to her.
Despite the incident involving Laxus and his battle for Fairy Tail, the festival continued and Erza participated by performing with her swords while Mystogan watched her from afar.
When the dark guilds were proving themselves to be rather active of late, the members of all the legitimate Guilds knew the reason for this, they knew it was because of the Balam Alliance, a group that controlled all the Dark Guilds like a crime syndicate. Makarov had made an alliance with the other guilds and decided that it was time for them to finally fight back against them, and the first step was to stop them from reaching Nirvana, an ancient city turned into a weapon capable of changing the alliance of a person's heart from good to evil and vice versa. Erza and Team Natsu were chosen to represent Fairy Tail on this mission, and they joined forces alongside members from Lamia Scale, Blue Pegasus, and Cait Shelter, including Lyon, Sherry, and Jura from Lamia Scale and Wendy and Charle of Cait Shelter. As they began their march towards Nirvana, they ran into one of the three main Guilds of the Balam Alliance and the ones they had to face if they wanted to reach Nirvana, the Oracion Seis.
Erza switched into her flight armor and battled Cobra, only to be bitten by his poisonous snake, Cuberos. The poison was visible on her immediately and began to spread quickly. Being the warrior that she is, Erza took Lucy's belt and wrapped it around her arm and told them to cut her arm off. Lyon stepped up to take care of the job, but in the end he couldn't. Erza passed out and Lucy stayed by her side to take care of her until she recovered. Natsu eventually returned with Wendy who could use Sky Magic which had healing properties. She healed Erza but she had yet to wake up, however as she started to come to she heard the group talking about how Jellal had been revived and while they weren't looking she snuck off to find them.
Erza tracks down Jellal and quickly learns that he no longer has any memories of who he is or what he has done. She tells him the truth, not leaving out any details of his awful history and it causes him to break down in tears. He tells her that he has placed a self destruct spell on Nirvana so that it will explode, but after hearing what Erza has said he has placed one on himself as well so that he can kill himself to make up for what he has done. However, the leader of the Oracion Seis, Brain, appears and says he knows the spell as well and cancels it out on both of them.
Erza and Jellal grab a hold of Nirvana as Brain makes it transform and grow legs that allow it to start walking to it's path, the Cait Shelter guild. Aboard Nirvana they run into Midnight, who quickly defeats Jellal. Erza tries to attack him but all her spells are deflected. It is then that Erza realizes how his powers work, that it is the magic of deflection and he has the power to bend other people's magic to his whim. She swaps out her armor for her Robes of Yuen, an elastic armor that won't be able to be bent by Midnight's magic. She begins to defeat Midnight, causing him to lose his cool and transform into a great beast. However Erza uses her artificial eye to see through this as an illusion and defeats Midnight easily.
Erza informs the rest of her team that Nirvana is being controlled by six legs, each with it's own operating system. They must destroy the systems all at the same time or else they will be able to repair each other. Erza finds one of them and waits for the signal to attack it, and once Natsu finishes fighting Brain they are able to destroy the operating systems all in one attack. It looks like they have saved the day, only to see that the Magical Council is none too pleased about the return of Jellal and their adventure ends with Erza watching her old friend being taken away to prison.
Following their adventures in Edolas, the guild celebrates their reunion and the return of Lisanna while Erza tests Pantherlily's strength and swordsmanship abilities. The next day, Erza is seen alongside Makarov during the announcement of the S-Class Wizard Promotion Trial. After the master nominates the participants for the trial, he explains that Erza, Mirajane and Gildartz will be participating as well with the main objective of preventing the teams from advancing to the next part of the exam.
In the first round, each team had to select a path to pass through where they either had to face an opponent(s) or walk through a clear path without interruption. Erza's path, Path D, was chosen by Juvia and Lisanna. Although the duo put up a valiant fight, with Erza's Sea King Armour which nullified all water magic, the team didn't stand a chance. After their battle, they rested at a camp on the island. While Erza was cooking, Mirajane told her that Elfman and Evergreen told her they were getting married which shocks Erza and prompts her to send a barrage of questions. Soon after, she wonders why Mest and Wendy haven't arrived at the base and decides to go search for them, along with Juvia.
While in search of the missing team, her and Juvia find an injured Levy and asks who did this to her. Not too distant, Yomazu states that the Seven Kin of Purgatory are en route to the island and that they won't stand a chance against them. Erza immediately launches a flare into the sky, signifying the temporary halt of the exam as well as an enemy attack. She then walks over to Yomazu and asks what their goals are. After refusing to answer, she gives him a beating and the beaten mage finally reveals their plan to reawaken Zeref who is located on the island. Conflicted over whether to believe him or not, her and Juvia are then attacked by an army of mages from the Grimoire Heart guild. Once they easily defeat them all, Meldy shows up and confronts the two.
After she gives them a more detailed summary of Grimoire Heart's plans regarding Zeref, she immediately launches her attack, which creates numerous magical swords, towards Erza and Juvia, managing to pierce Juvia's water body. She then continues to assault the water mage, stating that she'll be "13th place". Erza tells Juvia to stand back while she takes care of her, but Meldy interrupts saying that Erza will be in "4th place". Not understanding the rankings, Meldy explains that its the order in which she has decided to kill them. She then goes on stating that Gray will be "1st place" because he killed Ultear's mother which sparks the attention of both Erza and Juvia. As Meldy was about to use her magical blades against Erza, Juvia uses her water magic to surround the swords and knock them away. She then gets up and with a disturbed face says that she can't forgive Meldy while a nervous Erza tries to calm her down.
Juvia proceeds to attack Meldy with tremendous force and power, which shocks Erza since she hadn't fought like that during the exams. After watching her fight, she came to understand that Juvia's strength was her need to protect a loved one. Juvia then tells Erza that she should look for Wendy and the others while she handles Meldy. Erza concurs with the decision and as she runs from the battlefield, Juvia defends her from Meldy's attack. As Erza runs in search of her guildmates, Azuma appears from a tree and calls out to her and states that he had already taken care of "that little girl", referring to Wendy. Soon after, she senses an immense magical power from Bluenote.
As their fight begins, Erza is seen requipping to her Flame Empress Armor to negate Azuma's explosion attacks. After requipping into several more armors, the two battle a little while longer, with Azuma commenting that she is just like him who seeks a strong opponent. However, Erza replies that she does not care for the enemies' strength as long as she has the strength to protect her friends. Intrigued, Azuma decides to put her claim to the test as he activates his Lost Magic and uproots the entire island's tree which bestows divine protection on and enhances the magic of those who bear the crest of Fairy Tail. He then states that without the tree's powers, her friends will lose their lives, however, he continues, if she defeats him, he will restore the tree, hence their lives will be spared. Without a choice, Erza makes the first move, requipping into her Heaven's Wheel Armor and attacking Azuma only to be easily blocked. She then requips again into her Flight Armor which allows her to land a hit, however her second attempt fails as Azuma captures her and uses Tower Burst, inflicting heavy damage on the female armored mage. With Erza running out of armors, she decides to put all her magical power into one powerful attack so she requips into a mere sarasi and a single sword. As she charges at Azuma with her Crimson Cherry Technique, Azuma easily ensnares her and casts "Cry of the Earth", defeating her. Meanwhile, an imprisoned Jellal says her name as he no longer feels her presence.
Upon hearing his voice, Erza wakes up and tells herself that it must be her imagination. She then wills herself to get up and tries to maintain her focus on Azuma as she charges towards him with her sword. Although he blocks her first attack, it manages to graze him. However, as Erza continues her assault, Azuma binds her arms and legs with his wood magic, completely immobilizing her. Struggling to get free, she begins to recall memories of when Jellal gave her the name "Scarlet" which was giving her the strength to move. But Azuma, attempting to reassure his victory, casts "Cry of the Earth" again. Erza, who believes that this is the end for her, hears Natsu's voice asking if she's given up already. She then sees a vision of him and the rest of her friends standing behind her, giving her the resolve to fight back. After apologizing to them for thinking that she was protecting them when in fact she was the one being protected, she emerges from Azuma's attack with newfound determination and charges towards him, ready to land the finishing blow. Azuma, who is shocked to see that his spell, which is the fusion of all the magic of Tenrou Island under his control, is protecting Erza, comments that her guild is truly amazing as he is cut down by the female mage.
Erza's primary magic ability is called "Requip". This allows her to store weapons or armor in a pocket dimension with which she can switch any of her weapons for the other at any time. She is also able to equip armor to her body and create different armor with different abilities. Erza says she has over 100 types of armor.
Heart Kreuz Armor
This is Erza's casual armor that she wears most of the time. It was made by Heart Kreuz.
Heaven's Wheel Armor (天輪の鎧 Tenrin no Yoroi)
This armor allows Erza to face multiple opponents. She can summon hundreds of floating swords that can be fired at enemies.
Black Wing Armor (黒羽の鎧 Kureha no Yoroi)
This armor gives Erza one sword, a revealing outfit and devil like wings. This armor increases the destructive power in Erza's attacks.
Flame Empress Armor (炎帝の鎧 Entei no Yoroi)
This flame resistant armor makes fire-based attacks half as effective against her. In this form, she has no armor on her shoulders but more on her limbs. The boots resemble dragon feet/claws.
Giant's Armor (巨人の鎧 Kyojin no Yoroi)
A yellow and blue colored armor that increases Erza's throwing power. She used this to destroy the moon for the villagers of Galuna Island.
Adamantine Armor (金剛の鎧 Kongō no Yoroi)
A high-level defensive armor used to withstand extremely powerful attacks.
Purgatory Armor (煉獄の鎧 Rengoku no Yoroi)
Little is known about this armor, Erza simply says that no one has ever seen it and lived, but it was quickly destroyed before she could use it in battle. The armor design is highly demonic looking implying it may enhance her strength or provide some sort of dark magic abilities.
Normal Fight Robes
This armor has no special powers or properties, it simply consists of pants with flames on them and sarashi (bandages) over her chest along with two long Katanas.
Farewell Fairy Tail Armor (unofficial name)
This unnamed armor was shown when Erza bid her long time friends from The Tower of Heaven farewell by reciting the rules of quitting Fairy Tail. Nothing is known about this armor except that it is accompanied by a lance (a spear in the manga) on which the Fairy Tail flag is attached.
Lightning Empress Armor (雷帝の鎧 Raitei no Yoroi)
This armor is used against Laxus, it reduces damage she takes from lightning based attacks. She can also fire lightning from the end of her spear.
Robe of Yuen (悠遠の衣 Yūen no Koromo)
An armor made of an elastic Kimono that is able to prevent it from being manipulated by other's magic, it also gives Erza a boost in strength and speed.
Flight Armor (飛翔の鎧 Hishou no Yoroi)
This Leopard print covered armor is used to increase Erza's speed and agility but at the cost for defense.
Morning Star Armor (明星の鎧 Myoujou no Yoroi)
A similar design to Heaven's Wheel Armor which enables Erza to fire magic blasts.
Armadura Fairy Armor (妖精の鎧 Yousei no Yoroi)
This armor is only seen for a moment when she uses it to clash with Edora's version of Erza. The armor is hinted to be her strongest but when she clashes with Erza Knightwalker's strongest weapon both are shattered, proving both to be on equal levels.
Sea King Armor (海王の鎧 Kaiō no Yoroi)
This armor was designed to nullify water magic and was first introduced in the S-Class Exams when she battled Juvia and Lisanna.
Seduction Armor (誘惑の鎧 Yūwaku no Yoroi)
A newly bought armor and as the name implies, is used for seduction.
Erza has appeared in two Fairy Tail video games to date, and one crossover as a support character.
