Duo is one of the five pilots involved in Operation Meteor. He pilots the XXXG-01D Gundam Deathscythe and calls himself the God of Death.
Duo Maxwell was a war orphan raised on the streets of the L2 colony cluster. As a child, he survived by stealing food from colony and Alliance warehouses and food stores with other children. One day, after the they were caught and their home (a dilapidated shelter) is destroyed, Duo and the other orphans are taken in by the Maxwell Church. There, Duo meets Father Maxwell and Sister Helen, who try to teach him about God. However, Duo proclaims that he does not believe in God, only the God of Death, because he has never seen a miracle, only dead people. It is also at the church that Duo gains his trademark braid -- Sister Helen was trying to cut his hair, but as Duo protested, they settled on braiding it instead to keep it out of his way.
Eventually, war returns to the colony and the church becomes a refuge for rebels after a battle against the Alliance. After Father Maxwell gets into a disagreement with the rebels, Duo runs off promising to return with a mobile suit because the rebels claimed that that would change everything. After successfully securing said mobile suit and returning to the church, however, Duo finds the building on fire and everything dead or dying. With her last breath, Sister Helen tells Duo that he has God's blessing. The incident is later called the Maxwell Church Tragedy where over two hundred people were killed. Duo is the only survivor and it's at this point that he takes Maxwell as his surname.
Later, after being discovered on board a shuttle, Duo meets Professor G, who is impressed with his stealth skills. He becomes involved with Operation Meteor after that.
