 Dragon Ball SD - cuddly
 Dragon Ball SD - cuddly
Do you remember back in the days when Dragon Ball was just about a happy fun-loving kid with a tail going on adventures, and wasn't about the insane power levels Over 9000!!? If you are just the kind of person that the FUNimation company almost seems to depend on who just can't get enough Dragon Ball merchandise. I think you are going to get pretty excited about this news. This is an actual new manga that is due for release in Japan on December 3rd in the new magazine titled Super Strong Jump (Saikyō Jump). This publication will be dedicated to some spin-offs of some super popular series. One of which will be called Dragon Ball SD by Naho Ōishi. (SD stands for Super Deformed. Also, sometimes called Chibi.)

This new Dragon Ball SD will be filled with...

....comic misadventures of young Goku, Krillin, and other Dragon Ball alumni. They're also being a bit coy about hinting around another character who will be appearing. It makes me think it will be someone we wouldn't expect. I'm kind of hoping for Vegeta.

Included in the magazine will be more than just Dragon Ball SD. Other Shounen Jump series will be getting SD spin-offs. The list includes titles:
  • (Naruto) by Kenji Taira
  • Chopperman (One Piece) by Hirofumi Takei
  • (Katekyo Hitman Reborn!) by Toshinori Takayama
  • Toriko (Toriko) by Akitsugu Mizumoto

Also included in this magazine will be posters of the next Jump Heroes Film, a stereoscopic 3D double-billing of One Piece 3D: Mugiwara Chase and Toriko 3D: Kaimaku Gourmet Adventure!. Sadly, no information about the releases for the U.S., but keep your hopes up. The SD genre has been doing really well in America recently. Odds are pretty good we will get these.

What do you think about this news? Are you excited for some spin-off of some pretty cool characters?

I'm always excited about any new Dragon Ball stuff, looks like a bit of fun.
I'm guessing since these are categorised as "spin-offs" they won't be canonical?

I like the idea but I'm not too sure about the presentation.  I've never had much of a taste for the "SD" design except for the most brief of appearances.  It works okay for a limited gag in the series, but to tell a whole story that way doesn't appeal to me.  Still, I wish them the best of luck and I do love the pre-9000! Dragon Ball more than what it eventually became.

Your opinion is not misplaced but I have to say SD Goku looks an awful lot like normal young Goku and so does Krillin lol

hmm, seems interesting, although the images gave me the impression of crossover spinoffs, which would be crazy fun if someone actually did one.

UPDATE!!

I'm not sure why, but the titles of most of the extra series, other than Chopperman, are missing from the article.  I know they weren't edited out. They were missing from my original article submission after I hit send. I know I typed them, but Chopperman was the only one appearing. I don't know why they disappeared.

These are the full extra titles:
Rock Lee no Seishun Full-Power Ninden (from Naruto) by Kenji Taira
Chopperman (One Piece) by Hirofumi Takei
Vongola GP Kuru! (from Katekyo Hitman Reborn!) by Toshinori Takayama
Gourmet Gakuen Toriko (Toriko) by Akitsugu Mizumoto

@Halberdierv2:
I think these new manga have a lot of potential. It can take Dragon Ball back to when it was just about a fun adventure. Rock Lee's series could be a lot of fun. Chopperman has had cameos in the anime, and they are pretty silly.

I believe Chopperman has already been scanlated.  And from what I gather these spin-offs are dedicated to a much younger demographic.  However, from what Ive seen should still be a fun read, especially for the fans of those series.

This may seem kiddish with the whole chibi thing but these series will surely be entertaining.

@coonce:
Thanks. I'm rather pleased with how well my articles have been going on the front page. Just don't ask me why I'm putting in so much work. I'm still trying to figure that one out.

@zaldar:
Come now, it's normally my bit to be so pessimistic, but even I see some potential in these series. It's not as if they are trying to treat these as canon. They're just suppose to be fun little side books.

My only problem is that when these are coming to the US. It will be from my most despised publisher, VIZ.

can't wait for it... sounds fun....
I think the new character is gonna be Goku (from android saga) because remember they go back in time and Goku meets him self in the past...... that was funny....

I wish they made a spin-off with characters on the other side of the universe.

This is the opposite of what I hoped for.

@SasukeRules:
It's explained in the article at the end of the first paragraph.
