Oof... we’ve just gone from the some of the best filler to some of the worst. Better hold on tight to your seat, lunatics, because the praise train’s about to take a stop.

Tien and Chiaotzu are two characters I never really got a proper introduction to. They might as well be background decorations in the intro as far as I'm concerned. So I have no attachment to them, and maybe that’s why I’m viewing them much less charitably than I view the rest of the Z-Fighters I grew up with.

No… I’m not going to be conciliatory this time. Look, last episode, we got a complete narrative wherein two bad guys demonstrated exactly how evil and powerful they are by blowing up an entire planet. This time, a full 22 minutes have been devoted to characters training. And the majority of that training’s being done by ancillary characters who aren’t even that interesting within the pantheon.

Yeah yeah… we’ve got to understand this in the greater DRAGON BALL sweep. Perhaps their inclusion stresses how ominous a threat the Saiyans pose. Vegeta and Nappa are so bad, we need to pull literally every character out of the woodwork to band together against them. Even if that’s the case, this still feels like an also-ran inventory story, and it’s really puzzling how Toei would’ve run out of source material this quickly into the season. And again, by comparison, at least when the crew pulled Yamcha back into the fold, the recruitment was tied up in a baseball game that was quite amusing on its own merits. All the shenanigans with “Launch” or whatever her name simply plays rather ho-hum.

In simpler terms, I feel like I just bought a trading card deck and all it turned out to have were the same duplicates for lame characters that everybody already has.

Watch this episode, “Global Training" here and decide for yourself, then read my comments on the previous episode here.

I always liked Lunch, I prefer Dragon Ball to Z, so I have a fondness for some of the wacky, lesser characters.
Toriyama actually forgot that Lunch existed, literally, she was brought up in an interview and Toriyama had no idea who she was.

I know you're a TREMENDOUS fan of the gone but not forgotten Jersey Shore, Tom. In that series, they had a phrase: DTF.

In Dragonball, you get my respect as long as you're DTF: down to fight. Tien and Chiaotzu are DTF all the time, and I think that it's good that even in the face of overwhelming odds, the weakest fighters are willing to pay any price to protect their planet.

I feel like the "F" stands for something different on Jersey Shore...

That's absolutely hilarious. Goes to show just how many characters he just cranked out, week to week.

The reason why you didn't get a proper introduction to Tien and Chiaotzu is because your watching Dragon Ball Z without seeing Dragon Ball. In case your wondering Dragon Ball Z is a sequel and wasn't meant to be watched first. I don't even get why so many people think Z is the main series and only watch that one.

Yeah, Tien and Chiaotzu play bigger roles when they're introduced in Dragon Ball. Their strange powers (Chiaotzu has psychic powers and Tien introduced the multi-form technique) actually made them pretty interesting, and Tien was one of Goku's biggest foes.

I know you took at look at the original Dragon Ball manga in a retro review, but maybe at some point you should try watching some Dragon Ball episodes. Might help fill in a few gaps, kind of like how you're reviewing both old and new episodes of One Piece.

Dragon Ball Z pretty much left the non Saiyan characters behind. Dragon Ball had a good grip on showcasing characters.

I know you're not a DBZ fan, Tom, but I thought you would at least be aware that the Dragonball series had a lot of characters before DBZ started up. It's not off limits for some of them to show up again in DBZ. Technically you shouldn't have a connection to ANY character the first time you see them, so just give them a chance for now.
