Least Surprising Surprise Ever: FUNi has Dragonball Kai

Everyone knows that FUNimation loves its Dragon Ball licenses-- it's like printing money. People will keep buying Dragon Ball Z and its cohorts until the end of time, when it's been remade with all of the characters as cockroaches.

So I don't think any of you will be surprised that FUNimation has licensed Dragon Ball Kai-- an HD remastering of Dragon Ball Z, with all of the filler episodes and even filler moments cut out for a streamlined DBZ experience --and will be releasing it in the latter half of this year, presumably once they're done releasing the Dragon Box (an uncut version of the series).

I, for one, am looking forward to actually having a shot at entering into the Dragon Ball franchise, which has eluded me for years because, frankly, watching the original series is a rather daunting task. Any of you feel the same?

AHAHAHAH! I'm sorry, but I can't help but laugh at the fact that as soon as FUNi finishes one DBZ series release, they immediately start on another with hardly any gap.

Cool I played through Dragon Ball Z:Budokai Tenkaichi 2 back in the day and figured out most of the DBZ story that I knew bits and pieces of [before] (along with some cool what if ones) so having all the filler stripped out in it's anime form would be awesome as well.

I really saw the series once before. It was a fun ride and there were a lot of cool moments. I just don't feel the need to go again just because it's in HD. It's perfect for uber fans who are really into HD.

I'd be more interested in Ghost in the Shell: SAC in HD. I'd like that series on Blue Ray.

Dragon Ball is probably what's keeping that company afloat.
They've got to be on the ball with that, when their main competition has Bleach and Naruto.  That's a lot to keep pace with.
I'm not a fan of DB myself, but if the sales from that let FUNi give me stuff like Romeo x Juliet and Beck...well they can keep pumping it out forever.

@Kris: Well-put! ;)

I'm on your boat, Gia-- hard to get into a show that's old and really long. But I doubt I'll get around to buying DBKai, unless someone sits me down to watch it and I get really into it.

@gia: No, not at all. I just find it humorous how FUNi keeps releasing a new DBZ series right after another.

Going back and stripping out the filler is a fantastic idea. I hope that they do this in the future with other long-running series. (cough Bleach cough Naruto cough)

And this is why I held off on buying the Dragon Ball Z boxsets ;)

That's the point of Dragon Ball Kai, since it redubs and hyper compresses the action of the original Z. Getting, say, the entire Raditz arc done in like, an episode, not 4

You know, now that its happened, I wonder what we'll have to heckle them with now. Oh, oh... Wait, we can do Kai as normal, DVD releases (like, 1/2 season boxes). Then we can do Blu-ray versions/Full Season re-treads. I guess they have a couple of cycles left. By then releasing a HD versions of the normal Dragon Ball will be novel
