In my opinion this is the best Dragon Ball Z movie of all time. It revolves around an initially cold blooded low class Saiyan warrior named Bardock who also happens to be the father of Goku and Raditz. Though being a lower class soldier Bardock and his teammates took on missions that even the elite warriors refused to be assigned to causing Bardock's power level to rise exponentially rivaling even that of King Vegeta. Throughout his merciless conquests in the name of the tyrannical Frieza, Bardock is cursed with clairvoyance and is forced to witness the future destruction of his planet. Frieza noticing how fast the power levels of the Saiyans are rising especially Bardock's, Frieza becomes worried that a Super Saiyan (A Saiyan of legend that possesses extraordinary power) might emerge among the Saiyans driving Frieza to the point of paranoia.
Frieza devises a plan to kill the most powerful Saiyans which are Bardock and his crew. Bardock was given orders to carry out a fake mission on Planet Meat however unfortunately he was ambushed by Dodoria and his henchmen. His teammates were brutally killed by Dodoria and Bardock himself was nearly killed as well but managed to survive while Dodoria believed him to be dead and so returned to Frieza. Sadly observing his fallen comrades Bardock has one final conversation with his best friend and from then on begins wearing a headband stained in the blood of his friends. Bardock came to the conclusion that Frieza has realized the threat the Saiyans pose to him and becomes aware that it was he who ordered Dodoria to kill him. With this knowledge Bardock returned to Planet Vegeta in a heavily injured state where he once again began having visions of the future.
On Planet Vegeta he attempted to warn his fellow Saiyans of Frieza's betrayal and fear of them however Bardock's warnings were simply laughed at and mocked forcing him to face Frieza and his entire army.. alone. Having had a change of heart Bardock realizes the error of his ways and that working for Frieza, conquering planets and killing all of those people was a mistake and so he despite his physical state fights off Frieza's army and yells out to Frieza himself ready to confront the tyrant.
In space face to face with Frieza, Bardock states that he will kill Frieza and save his race from possible genocide however Frieza simply forms a Death Ball and kills Bardock and destroys Planet Vegeta wiping out nearly all Saiyans with the surviving Saiyans being Vegeta, Nappa, Raditz and Goku and later it was revealed that Broly and Paragus had survived as well. Mere seconds before his death Bardock had one final vision of the future and sees his son Kakarot (Goku's Saiyan name) face and defeat Frieza causing him to die with a smile on his face and his only regret being that he didn't have enough time to spend with his son.
I enjoyed this movie a lot. Though Bardock failed to save his people he did however function as a message of hope that Frieza will fall at the hands of a Saiyan. The story was excellent and original. The voice acting was good, the battle scenes were epic and the animation was good as well. Though Bardock never seemed to be particularly evil he was very cold and heartless however nearing the end of the movie he becomes warmer and more caring. I give this movie a perfect 5/5.
