Dr. Subari

Overview

Dr. Subari is a bedridden old man who lives with his son, Nutal. Dr. Subari wishes to die in peace without a struggle which puts him at odds with his son, who does all he can to prolong the impending doom that their planet is facing. Although called a doctor, Dr. Subari admits that he is little more than a metal welder.

Origin

The citizens of the armored planet were originally kindhearted people who didn't want to see the weak preyed on by the strong. To make this a reality, they covered every life form on the planet in armor. While this indeed protected the weak, it led to a situation where no animal was preyed on and all life on the planet began to wither away due to a lack of food sources.

Creation

Dr. Subari was designed and created by Shingo Araki and Shigeru Kogawa during the late 1970s. He appears in the Galaxy Express 999 series, which was created by Leiji Matsumoto, creator of the popular Captain Harlock franchise.

Major Story Arc

The Armored Planet

When Maetel is critically wounded during a layover on the Armored Planet, Tetsuro seeks out Dr. Subari to help her. When Tetsuro finds him, he discovers that not only is he in no condition to help anyone but that he doesn't have the training to help her either. Dr. Subari tells Tetsuro to leave before his son Nutal arrives, who would try to sacrifice Tetsuro to save he and his father's life. Nutal arrive before Tetsuro can leave and Dr. Subari tries to restrain he to give Tetsuro time to escape.
