So there was this one time when a fox spirit fell in love with a high school student and merged with him then showed their love to her brother by blasting him with a giant blue fireball. So yeah this wasn’t the most serious of first episodes. But let me go back to the beginning. Kanokon starts with our two jolly protagonists meeting in the street, there is Kouta a first year transfer student that looks more like a seven year-old. Then there is Chizuru a second year student who is a fox, in more ways than one. We are then quickly introduced to four other first years and given a defining trait for them all, these include;
You are not the only one.
- The short haired funny girl
- Long haired friend of short haired funny girl
- Brother, with a voice way to deep to be a first year.
Prudence gets pissy about Chizuru’s affection for Kouta and the others tease her about it then they head to school. The school day passes seemingly normally, one guy might have super speed and Brother is pissed about this. Chizuru gives Kouta a love letter, which she kept in the depths of her bosom. Where does she decide to reveal this? In the lunchroom full of people of course. At the end of the day, Kouta goes and meets Chizuru in a music room they kiss and she turns into a fox-girl. Strangely he takes this well and after a small amount of resistance is willing to “ Go the whole way”
. Brother turns up before they get “ down and dirty
” and is all kinds of mad at Chizuru. So she kisses Kouta again, merges with him and then promptly kicks Brother’s ass with a giant blue fireball. After they demerge, and get back to “ driving each others cars
She's one "foxy" lady.
The art in this episode is nicely animated and other than the fact that Kouta looks like he is seven, all the characters look quite nice and expressive. Chizuru is sexualised but not in a creepy way (even if I picked the worst picture on purpose). In fact, her scenes are some of the funniest in the show because she seems like a total parody of the sexy teen girl found in most hentai and ecchi anime. This idea could be taken throughout whole episode, as unlike most Rom-coms that build up to the eventual partnership, Kouta and Chizuru “ Rock the boat” in the very first episode.
I seriously hope that the rest of Kanokon is more of the crazy over the top antics that the end of episode one was showing rather than the normal, will they? won’t they? Than most other Rom-coms turn out to be.
