Hello everyone, it has been a long time since I published the September Edition: 1st Week and 2nd Week. The reason is that I've been so busy with school, wiki, and now, wiki moderation. I'm changing the blogs to make things easier for you guys and gals and myself. I can't do tables since it takes so much time. I will post DVD and Blu-ray covers. To all major Asian culture/mythology/astrology fans, if you have watched certain anime shows then you probably have notice the inspiration behind most of them. For example, we can not have Dragonball and Shinzo without Journey to the West. Well I have discovered another famous piece of Asian culture that has inspired anime...the Four Symbols.

The Four Symbols
The Four Symbols

According to Chinese Astrology, four mythloical creatures - the Azure Dragon of the East (Qinglong/Seiryu), the Vermillion Bird of the South (Zhuque/Suzuka), the White Tiger of the West (Baihu/Byakko), and the Black Tortoise of the North (Xuanwu/Genbu) - represent a direction (like on a compass) and a season (dragon = spring, bird = summer, tiger = fall, and tortoise = winder) as well as their own individual characteristics and origins. In China, some say that they correspond with the 5 Elements (dragon = wood, bird= fire, tiger = metal, tortoise = water, and the center = earth). There is also a 5th beast - The Yellow Dragon of the Center (Huáng-lóng/Kirin). In Japan, they are known as Four Guardian Spirits of Kyoto (and the 5th beast doesn't exist). So how many anime shows were inspired by this concept? Here's the known list:

  1. Shinzo: Although the story was inspired by Journey to the West, the characters were inspired by the Four Symbols: Mursha = Bird, Sago = Dragon, Kutal = Tiger, and Bika = Tortoise (kinda).
  2. Digimon Tamers: Withing the 2nd half of the show, a group of evil Digimon calling themselves the Devas, who, serving the Digimon Sovereigns (also based on the four symbols), believe that true Digimon shouldn't pair up with humans (it is later revealed they were actually misguided). The Digimon Sovereign are named after their Chinese names. There is also a 5th Digimon that supervises the others...which is sort of explained in Digimon Frontiers.
Digimon Sovereign ( Ebonwumon, Baihumon, Zhuqiaomon, Azulongmon, and Fanglongmon)
Digimon Sovereign ( Ebonwumon, Baihumon, Zhuqiaomon, Azulongmon, and Fanglongmon)
  1. Yu Yu Hakusho: Within the first season, there was a third storyline called "The Saint Beasts", where Yusuke and Kuwabara travel to demon world with Kurama and Hiei to stop the Four (Saint) Beasts from invading the human world. They are villains in the show, AND are given there Japanese names than their Chinese names.
The Four (Saint) Beasts (Seiryu the Blue Dragon, Byakko the White Tiger, Suzaku the Lightning Phoenix, and Genbu the Stone Turtle)

Due to Kuma's recent Ranger madness on the forums i decided to upload something I'm pretty sure no one owns any more. When I was like 6 I often went along with my mom to the tobacco store and since begging for even more candy was out of the question, I turned my attention to magazines. And being a big Power Rangers fan I collected quite some Dutch Power Rangers magazines. These where still being produced in Dutch format for Holland but this was the 3rd and final season and for some reason they did not continue under the title of Power Rangers Zeo. So these might as well be the final volumes released in my country. What is a shame though is that it pretty much in unreadable to you people so its all just pretty and nostalgic pictures for you guys XD

I could not save them all because my mom threw away most of them and I wasn't exactly careful with them to begin with. Still I think they survived pretty well these past 14 years ^^  The last one features Saban's Masked Rider the raped version of Kamen Rider Black RX and an add for the shit fest that is the show with illustrations drawn by the master himself. (which is the only thing that saves it)

What I have next is something I was addicted to Sticker albums, Man I was nuts for this stuff you had big stickers sold in 10 packs for fl.1- and 1 sticker wrapped around a piece of gum for fl. 0.05,- and accompanying these where both big and small sticker books. I threw away most of those but I kept this one and my Digimon album too (though i never had the chance to fill it.) If you know French you might understand something on these photo's XD

Also something I wanted to show is my Battle of the Planets sticker album. Something which I found at a 2nd hand shop. Its basically an recap of the entire show but to bad for you guys this 1980's Sticker Album is in Dutch too. lol Some of the stickers are lose due to the glue being that old. I think that I lost a few since I last got it.
Next up is something that is of some use to you guys, I got this at a retro game store and the owner of the store told me how rare these are I immediately bought it. Its a official annual book also for season 3 of Power Rangers. And this one is an U.K release so you guys can actually read it XD
And last but not least my old poster which I had on my wall for at least 5 years XD. And as you can see its still full of stickers (I was addicted to that gum lol)
Sorry for all the hazy pictures, I wanted to make this as quick as possible and if I had used a scanner (which I don't own) it would have destroyed the books. :P

Formulas for different anime and manga series rarely ever change for a very good reason: they work. I know in the past I have mocked certain arbitrary parts of the anime formula, the harem and exploitation anime in particular but my reasons were quite clear. Harem relies on sexy girls (or guys) to keep your attention and exploitation with over the top violence. But the formulas that work in anime usually involve characters of the show fulfilling various character archetypes we’ve seen time and time again in the past. There is the “we were childhood friends growing up” formula, the “turn the cold, distant character into a loveable guy”, and more that I really can’t be bothered to list.

One formula I enjoyed as a kid growing up and still do to this day is a formula that, in my opinion, can be used in any anime or manga and still work: the teenage team.

The Teenage Team, as I like to call it, is when a group of adolescences or pre-teens get together in a group in order to save the world/an alien species/the evil dictator who wants to take over…put whatever antagonist you want, the team bands together against near impossible odds to triumph over the said evil. But why does it work so well?

For starters, the team will always have characters that you can honestly like. Of course there will be personality issues with one or two characters that you might not like and want to reach through the television just to punch them in the kidneys, but they always have a redeeming trait to counteract this off-putting trait about them. Let me pick a few examples. In Teen Titans, Beast Boy was an annoying, hyperactive prankster slob but when the time called for it, he knew how to be a real badass and a reliable ally. Tai from the first season of Digimon fell into a similar construct, but his abilities as a leader and as a friend and older brother really make you like him. And as much as it pains me to say this, Naruto can also be a genius when the time calls for it. Look at his battle with Pain. That battle had some clever thinking on his part mixed with three parts strategy, two parts strength, and a whole lot of luck.

As much as I hate this kid, I gotta give credit where credit is due.
As much as I hate this kid, I gotta give credit where credit is due.

The goals of the team are always admirable, if not amazing. Granted I feel a little sour at times when a group of teenagers is asked to rectify the issues of the area they live in since they may be the only ones to do so, but the fact that they go into battle with the idea that failure could occur and they themselves could be killed is quite noble and brave. Although you got to wonder what sorts of organization local armies have if they ask a group of thirteen year olds to combat monsters.

Growing up with shows like Pokémon, Digimon, Sailor Moon, and Yu-Gi-Oh! pushed the teenage team formula again and again and it never faltered to be awesome. I think it has to do with my love of Power Rangers before watching anime that made me enjoy a team, but that aside, with the small amount of nitpicking there is when it comes to the posse of kids in puberty, you really can’t discredit the notion. Hell, I admit all of you have at one point wished you were a part of one of the amazing dream teams. I know I wished I was a Digidestined when I was a kid growing up. But that’s another story…

I bought a 3 special pack this weeks, which where on sale for just €5,- pp 2 holding 4 booster and 1 holding 6 and 3 promo's, Very handy for people sick of buying separate boosters over and over. :P

Foils:
Starting with the foils, I've could have been more lucky, (Wanted a €75,- Charizard :P) but this seems fine. I'm very happy with the Sableye and Hunchcrow cards and i'm looking forward to more Dark Type cards very soon!! Also the two starter cards are promo's which came standard with the special packs (to bad i did not get a Turtwig card). I don't really know what to say about the others except that i don't know what the hell is up with the Dugtrio card lol.

Special Reverse Foils:
Okay now i FINALLY know what i'm dealing with here, Seems that in the years that i did not collect the cards there have been several variations of reverse foils, some of which are just like normal foil cards but with gold text! This was something a simple Google search could of fixed but now that i finally got that out of the way i can ignore that XD. I got pretty cool cards here in one pack i got both Duskull and Dusclops and with that i almost got an evolution complete :), Lugia is probable a pretty rare card since the seal is small and it got glitter unlike the normal reverse foils, I now got 2 Medicham so now i can trade that one for another cool card :P, and for some reason the Nidran Female card has a weird line in the foil itself so i'm pretty sure i got a printing mistake ^^

Normal Reverse Foils:
I don't remember which specific new cards i got, (well it was a few days ago) so i decided to add an update on my reverse foil album :)

Aside from that:
The 2nd hand seller i contacted with finally got a Dutch Venusaur in near mint condition for me, it costed just €3,- and i'm happy with it!! So i dumped my American Venusaur back in the album it belongs to and i put my new Dutch one where it belongs :)
And it looks waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better!! :D Now all i need is a Dutch Raichu!! XD

Aside from that i also found this awesome safe for just €5,- which i was planning to hang up and put some figures in it, but now i'm not that sure any more XD
Its a big safe but it does not seem to fit much, Maybe the candy toys can fit in there but i'm not that sure at the moment.

I also got a Agumon teddy bear and a Gabumon vinyl figure, both costed just €1,- which is awesome because the tag for Agumon is still on it after 10+ years!! :D
Also another person on the antique market wants to sell me a whole bunch of cards for really cheap, it seems her nephew wants to get rid of some of his cards and even though i said i only wanted rare cards she insisted on keeping the total price under €20,- so that's also a good score for me! i'm looking forward to buying it in 2 weeks :)

For some time now i decided that i needed to finish my collection of GB/GBC pokemon games and so i did. And i was very lucky because a few weeks back i went to the
I do own the Cardgame for the Gameboy i just can`t find it at the moment
I do own the Cardgame for the Gameboy i just can`t find it at the moment
old-school game shop and i found out that they owned all the games i needed to complete my collection. So yesterday i went back and bought most of them, i said most of them since apparently Silver and Crystal weren't on stock at the time. So now i`m 2 games short of a full collection, 3 if you count the Pokemon Green version (eng) which is a bootleg. (if it ain`t French or Spanish ect,) So with the extra money i decided to also replace my old Gameboy with a  new ugly green coloured Gameboy Colour and i don`t care about the ugly green part. It works fine the only thing that doesn`t work is the audio box and that doesn`t really effect my gameplay because i like it better with earplugs which work fine on the Gameboy. So now i`m paying more attention to my new Gameboy then i give to my NDS Lite and that doesn`t bother me a bit!

 Two weeks later......
 Two weeks later......
Now i know what you are thinking how nerdy is that? i can top it easily! well that wasn`t the nerdy thing the blog title refers to... See i also went to an collector`s shop and
I wish it was Digi-Battle 3 but it ain`t happening
I wish it was Digi-Battle 3 but it ain`t happening
bought an entire box of Digi-Battle 2 boosters for €25,- unopened for at least a decade. I did this several times before with Yu-Gi-Oh cards and Pokemon cards but this is the first time for Digimon and i`m proud to add it to my collection.

Well that`s it €85,- well spend! (that extra 10,- is from my hardcover Spider-man: Kraven`s Last Hunt) i do hope i come across the other games soon enough so i can start on the GBA and DS games and i`ll post another blog as soon as i again do something as stupid and nerdy as buying a whole box of TGC boosters with the intention of not opening them EVER!. XD

Just a little something I got curious about with the recent theatrical release of Ponyo. After checking Box Office Mojo, I made this video featuring the top 10 highest grossing anime movies in America. Considering the licensing muscle and promotion that these movies had, you shouldn't be too surprised over the totals. Here's the video:
