X-Men Shoujo Manga Cover Revealed

I've got to admit, I've had a hard time remaining optimistic about Del Rey's upcoming X-Men: Misfits manga, particularly thanks to the Totoro-esque appearance of Beast (even if he does share Del Rey rep Ali Kokmen's love of ties). The newly-discovered cover doesn't do a lot to alleviate my fears.


That said, I can't entirely agree with Topless Robot's case for what he considers the imminent failure of the series-- he suggests that there's no market for such a book, because it's too girly for X-Men fans, and shoujo fans will favor established series from Japan over an OEL.


Even though I'm not totally fond of the cover (...it's a little busy, and the color mix seems odd, although that could just be the scan quality), I'm interested in buying the first volume. I think a lot of people, including girls, remember X-Men from the '90s animated series and more recently the films, and I'm betting that manga fans who enjoyed the films and cartoon but couldn't find a time to dive into the intimidating volume of American comics will consider it, too.


How about you? Would you buy an X-Men shoujo manga in concept? Seeing the cover now, will you buy this particular book?

I'd give it a flip through to see how it is. I'm not so skeptical about the concept, as I'm sure it'll be better than the Marvel Mangaverse. Must admit I did lol at Totoro-Beast when I first saw him.

No simply because I cannot imagine the shoujo-tizing of Rogue, Gambit, Wolverine *shivers*, Storm, and the rest of the X-Men crew.  Also, I grew up watching X-men on Saturday mornings (shown on Fox channel 32 in my hometown of Chicago) and it brings some fond memories.  It looks like this series may have brand new characters that are not a part of the X-Men universe.    The X-Men comic books I own are illustrated by Jim Lee, Andy Kubert, John Romita, Jr., and Joe Madueria.  I simply don't like American comic book characters illustrated manga style.

Ruby: Well, I'm not sure if this makes it any better to you or not, but the story of X-Men: Misfits actually revolves around Kitty Pryde as the first (and only) female student at Xavier's academy. So no Rogue or Storm, and probably no Gambit or Wolverine.

@Gia:  I see.  Kitty Pryde/Shadowcat is going to be the only female in X-Men: Misfits.  I was wondering who was the female in the front cover.  I initially thought it may be Jubilee or a character similar to her.  I guess the guy in the white hair is suppose to be a teenage Iceman and the guy with the flames is Sunfire or Sunspot.  That's good information to know.  Now I'm wondering how the creators are going to pull this off.  Oh well, I look forward to your review of the manga. ^_^

Not interested. (Which is sad, because I used to buy a lot of X-Men books and there are a ton of shoujo manga titles in my collection.)

Ruby: I'm guessing there'll be other female characters, including possibly some of the older generation as teachers, but we haven't seen any or had any confirmed yet to my knowledge.

Not to sound like a total internet-bum, but this cover's been out and around since late July of last year.

That said, it still certainly doesn't scream X-men to me at all. With all the plot and character changes, it seriously makes me wonder why they just didn't build from the ground up. Sure it can take place in a Marvel-esque universe with mutants and a school but I don't see why it has to take original characters and change them behind recognition. What's the point? o.o

To be honest, this book caught my eye on the shelf at Border's by chance. I love X-Man and Kitty Pryde as the main character sold me (she's my favorite X-man). The art's a bit frilly and the story is a bit silly, but the revamped, shojo-esque representation of all my favorite X-men is ensnaring.  Sometimes I would stop and go, "Wow, what a great revamped portryal" and othertimes I would almost cringe, but I'm sold on the series as it is goofy, but still sticks to the general spirit of the X-men while creating a story line that is new (reinventing Xavior's accident, etc.) and accessible to new and old fans alike.
