Death Note is a class act all the way through and a great example of an anime that dose not need any giant robots, sword fights, or super sayins' to generate genuine suspense. The story is remarkably tense right from the start when a young man named Light comes across a note book with the power to kill anyone who's name is written inside and before long is testing this grim god like ability on wanted criminals, Light seeks to create a new world free of evil with himself as a its ruling god under the public alias Kira. This dose not sit well however for the worlds greatest detective known simply as "L" a highly eccentric and brilliant man who sees this Kira as nothing more than a serial killer with a god complex. the two scheme and plot against each other in what I can only describe as the most gripping showdown of intellectual bad asses' since "The Seventh Seal". The show even manages a bit of dark humor by way of Light's shinigami sorta sidekick Ryuk, who was also the death note's previous owner,. Overall the show looks great its moody use of red and blue shading alone is dam near poetic and some how they made the mere act of writing look gloriously epic. The soundtrack follows in much the same league with one of the most haunting chorus chant's since "Akira".
All in all Death Note is a dark twisted masterpiece,
side note/ I can not say the same for it's lame live action counter part
