Dude... you're just pulling our leg, right?
Dude... you're just pulling our leg, right?

L’S DEAD!?!?! No way!!!

L can’t be dead. He can’t be! He’s the best character in this whole show! There’s got to be some way out of this. This has to be part of his master plan. Come on, if Light was able to recover from comprehensive amnesia, then L’s got to find some way to bounce back from a heart attack.

Ack! Nobody’s safe in this show! And the worst part is that it’s all on account on that ditz Misa. I feel good for calling Rem’s death like I did, but man… it just HAD to be L and Watari’s deathes that got her turned to sand? That’s like being proven right in the worst way. Ack! What a dramatic scene though, with the slow motion and the fluorescent scribble. I guess if he has to check out, this was at least an artful exist.

So many questions… and a lot of them were brought up just before L bit it. Light, that bastard, actually brings up some of the most challenging ones. Do L and the state have the right to use the death note, while Kira does not? On what grounds can they even try Kira if they do apprehend him? There aren’t exactly precedents for this kind of case and it’d be tricky to establish guilt, because he wasn’t directly involved in the murders.

There’s that pointed question L asks Light.   “Since the day you were born, have you ever been honest?”

L knows. He has to know. And it seems like he knows he’s going to die, too, telling Watari that something’s wrong in the beginning and asking about the bells? His own funeral bells? Aaaaaaahhh… he has to be in on it, because I couldn’t help but see a lot of allusions to the Last Supper in that scene after he and Light step out of the rain - - L offering to wash the feet of his betrayer right before he dies on account of his scheming, and what not.  If it was intentional, it’d certainly follow all those other Biblical allusions with the forbidden fruit and what not.

I’m sure that scene fueled the imagination of thousands of yaoi artist, too.

Ack! L can’t be dead. He IS Batman. They even flashing glimpses of some childhood trauma at what looks like an orphanage in this episode. He’s got a plan… I know it.

You can watch this episode, “Silence,” here on Hulu and get worked up in your own way.  Read my comments about the previous episode, here.

you ever hear the saying "the best is yet to come?"
unfortunately, that isn't the case with this part of death note, the best is now behind you,
i'm not saying that you won't enjoy it anymore, because you will, its still gonna be a great show, but it wont be quite as good as it was just a few episodes ago

Christ, I remember this episode. You're right, L was the best character on the show. Not gonna lie, this was another reason that I dislike Light so much, he tends to off the best characters of the show. Although even I have to admit, Light's plan that led up to this point was brilliant. Still...messed up episode.

That's pretty much the spoiler that I didn't wish to ruin.....Well, one of them.
Actually, guilt is already proven in the Death Note itself. The hand writing. If you can prove Shinigami exist by touching the Death Note. Is it that much harder to believe that using it could kill someone?
There is even more proof when you consider the times where Light has used elaborate means to cause someone's death.
I can tell you this. I was originally watching the dubs of this series when I was watching it the first time.  It was after this episode I basically said, "Screw this."; and I started watching fan subs a couple episodes at a time. L was the only thing that had me interested in this show.
I just had to know what was going on.
I was looking through the screen shots on the Death Note episodes here on Anime Vice. Those pictures are absoluely tiny.

The last great episode of Death Note. The rest are good, but not as good as these 25. That's just my opinion.

Yes, Light wins!! Am I the only one who likes Light? Oh well..This was a brlliant episode where every (most) piece(s) of the puzzle came together. I never really thought about the Biblical aspects of series but I understand your thoughts Tom. The scene where L dies and Light is holding him is priceless. I was smiling and laughing long before Light got to doing so.
I love how no one is safe in this series. It's boggles my mind to think of how someone can come up with a story where significant characters are permanently, shall I say, wrote off. Also, while this is one of the best eps of the show (and I agree the best of the series was up to this point) I feel the best eps are the last couple. My thoughts on those will have to wait.

Ha, I was waiting for you to get to this episode. Your reaction was pretty similar to mine, which was basically 1. Not possible. 2. He has to come back, somehow. 3. NOOOO WHYYYYY!?

@FoxxFireArt: Don't forget that people can change their handwriting intentionally. I have changed handwriting styles many times in the past. I'm not sure how credible a handwriting expert can be in detecting whether someone intentionally changed their handwriting.
Well, I guess this is the moment we've all been waiting for. Light and his plans worked, but there are still 12 episodes left? What could possibly happen?

He had no reason to change his hand writing before when he didn't believe he could be caught or anyone was even chasing him.
It's actually far more difficult to change your own hand writing. Hand writing analysis is far more complicated then one may think. While it is possible to change the way your handwriting looks. There are ways to tell that someone is trying to mask their handwriting. It can be as subtle as the way the pen lifts from the paper. It's completely possible to tell someone is trying to change their handwriting.

Great episode.  I love the I told you not to f*** with me look on Light's face when he's holding L.  I was sad to see him go but I loved watching him leave.

@ninjadude853:  If L is gone for good, then the best will definitely have to be behind me.

@FoxxFireArt:  You didn't like the dub? I think it's really well-done. The guy playing L is fantastic.

@Necrotoxin: We'll found out. There's still, what, 12 episodes left?

Absolutely not. That wasn't it. I agree. The dub cast is excellent. If anything, I like the dub cast more then the Japanese. That is very rare.
I mean I was so infuriated that L was killed that I had to know as soon as possible what was happening. I still watched the dubs as they appeared on TV. I was just also watching the subtitles three at a time. I didn't see how you could make this story move and have the detective killed half way through.
I'm not going to ruin anything for you. I try to avoid spoilers. I'll just say that the twist coming is pretty cool, and we'll leave that matter at that.
