Good to see that the man's got his dignity back after this. Man, this was a sad scene to watch.
Good to see that the man's got his dignity back after this. Man, this was a sad scene to watch.

“Frenzy,” indeed. DEATH NOTE hasn’t been this race-against-the-clock intense since that episode that introduced the second Kira. The moment  when Aizawa and his fro reappeared - - that was up there in the “goose bump-inducing category” with that scene where the cops erected a human barricade to shield Chief Yagami. Seeing as how I gave Matsuda respect earlier, I’ve also got to give some to the Aizawa-man. Even when L warns him not to intervene for his own safety, he’s still committed to seeing this manhunt through. That takes resolve.

Admit it. You'd be freaking out, too.
Admit it. You'd be freaking out, too.

Actually, this whole episode was just filled with sharp moments. Higuchi’s fake-out with the dummies… well, there’s not much to say about that aside from commenting on how tense it was, is there? The part where all the cops start seeing   Rem, one after the other, was cccreeepppyyy,  too. This giant demon’s just… standing there, like some optical illusion you can’t ignore. It sort of goes back to what I was saying earlier about how this series’ approach to “magical realism” reminds me a lot of Stephen King’s work.  I wonder how L’s going reconcile this bit of fantasia with his rigidly-logical view of the situation. He did freak out something fierce over the mere mention of Shinigami before.

Speaking of L… he’s definitely getting his hands dirty in this episode, letting the traffic cop die like that. Sure, maybe the task force didn’t have total comprehension of the death note's powers, but still… that hesitation introduced even more gray morality into this already murky conflict. You can make valid criticisms of Light, but L can’t play the card of being flawless, either.

And, of course, there’s that other great moment in this episode when all the Kira memories come flooding back into Light. I knew it was going to happen eventually, but that chain-lighting slideshow was still powerful enough to light-up a city. This changes everything, all over again… AND I WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS NEXT!!!

You can watch this episode, “Frenzy,” for yourself on Hulu here, and read my comments about the previous episode here.

This does kind of remind me of Stephen King. Back when he was good and writing actual thrilling novels. Now, he seems to be just going through the paces. Feels more like he's selling books off his name.

Now, this is where I have to respectfully differ with you slightly. L had no idea Higichi had the Shnigami Eyes. Let alone it was some kind of option. He never showed that ability before. If he did have it. From L's perspective, why didn't he use it before? He could of killed Matsuda much earlier. He had no idea that this officer was in such danger.
In this situation, you are putting all the responsibility on L to of known Huguchi would suddenly get the powers of the second Kira. When all evidence prior suggested he didn't have that power.

I just ask this of you. How can you blame L for not predicting the unpredictable? It's sort of akin to what I asked before. How could they of made a fake death note if they don't know what a death note even is? In this episode they only thought it was a note for later.

This did have a really good ending. I completely agree with you on that. It shows why the death note was to be directed to someone who was greedy and a business man. Light needed someone who would have a pattern that he could find. A pattern he knew his pre-death note self would look into.
Light now even has a fall guy, but L has a death note and will learn what it is. That's information he didn't have before.

One of the greatest lines in anime history.

Arguably the most chilling moment in the series.

It's been quite a while since I read Deathnote, but this moment (along with about four others) still stands out strikingly vividly in my mind.

Is this a combined review of episodes 23 and 24? The description in the last paragraph don't apply until the next episode.

Also, L doesn't really know the rules/limits of the Death Note and the user's abilities. I'd say he made the proper precautions to go against Kira, but supernatural powers were too much for the task force to comprehend at the moment.

@ZachTheAnimeGeek:
Don't worry, its not really a spoiler. Its the first thing that happens in the next episode, and like Tom said, we knew it would happen eventually.

And so ends the worst arc in the series. It's got a pretty intense ending though that does get quite better.

I think I might've got a little too excited after I watched the preview for the next episode on the DVD. Forgive me guys. I was just in a frenzy.

I too was confused with all the talking about ep 24 when this was supossed to be ep 23. But I will stick with talking about ep 23. You're glued to your seat in this one as you watch Higuchi race to find out Matsuda's name. Nonetheless of course he makes the 'eye deal'. I really don't know if I would make that deal. I mean, half of life is gone. Poof! I agree with Light on relying on your own abilities. Now that Higuchi has nowhere to run, what will he do?

This reminds me of Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality.
