Hey everyone, welcome to the Toonami's discussion thread for Deadman Wonderland. I know it's a bit late, but I wanted to keep the hype and the momentum that Toonami and Richie Branson left high as possible in this community.

For those who are new to the Deadman Wonderland franchise, here's a synopsis written by the Anime Vice wiki editors.

The Tokyo Quake. A devastating disaster that left the city in ruins, and is the setting of our sordid tale.

The Deadman Wonderland. A prison where only the worst of the worst go. But Ganta Igarashi has found himself falsely accused of murder and sent to this terrifying prison. Afraid for his life, Ganta discovers that he is a " Deadman", a person who can manipulate their own blood as a form of attack. Now, Ganta and his new friend Shiro must find a way out of the prison, or else fall victim to the sadistic Director and his diabolical plans.

Questions for Discussion

I'm just adding these to promote the discussion.

  • What do you guys and gals feel about the dub? What characters' voices were good and what were bad?
  • Do you feel that Toonami did a good job in airing Deadman Wonderland?

I'm going put my thoughts into this spoiler box and comment later.

Pros:

It was a hell of roller coaster ride. Lots of tension, violence, and profanity. I could have sworn it had a lot of bleeps. It was funny at some times.

I remember Minatsuki had a lot of bleeps when she shares what really happened in the past. I love her voice acting.

Crow and Owl's dub voice are cool.

Cons:

Due to the dubbing, Ganta's voice actor makes it hard to take him seriously. I haven't watch the sub yet, but I have seen some clips. Shiro's dub voice is okay, but she does sound innocent and eerie when she sings in the sub version.

Like most violent anime shows, there is a lot of censorship. What they do is make some areas black. During the first episode and Crow's first fight with Ganta, it's really hard see. In Ganta's first meeting with Crow, it's hard to enjoy the action when everything is too damn dark.

Thank you everyone for sharing your thoughts.

Notes: I usually record Adult Swim on my VHS tapes since I usually wiki edit late on Saturdays. Since May of 2012, I recorded Deadman Wonderland up to Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood. I'll start up a discussion thread for Casshern Sins but not for Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood.

I've rather enjoyed deadman wonderland and have seen both versions of the show, personally I kind of like the Sub better purely because gantas voice is TERRIBLE in the dub, however Shiro and Crow are perfect in the dub probably better then the original at playing off that character. Toonami was smart to add this to their line up I mean a better acquisition would be to try and dub mirai nikki but I dont know if thats a fiscal possibility for them, its something toonami has and only has (in terms of dub) and for the most part of interest for me when it comes to toonami and without something like this i think Toonami would have sank out right. Casshern is at least something new but I just think they need a heavy hitter like mirai nikki.

@Elfenlied1012:

I haven't heard of Future Diary. After looking it up, it's pretty bloody just like this show. I do agree Toonami needs more shows to fill the rest of the 3 hours which is currently used for reruns.

There were times when things got serious and Ganta's voice just ruins the tension by making me laugh.

Here's a video of how many bleeps I heard.

Edit:

Could not find a video for Owl's dub voice.

The show is bloody but no more so then Deadman wonderland I really think it would be a smart acquisition, plus Future dairy can be entry level for mature audiences in my opinion.

As for deadman the cursing is a bit... much but its been better about it.

@Elfenlied1012:

What other shows did you want to see?

Post by Elfenlied1012 (557 posts) See mini bio Level 15

@takashichea: On toonami? Like I said Future Diary. Other then that I think .hack/roots is a nice call back, but realistically fate zero maybe, maybe madoka but thats not really entry level. What about you?

@Elfenlied1012: I would love to see Future Diary myself, and maybe Shiki as well on Toonami.

As for Deadman Wonderland it is definitely the show eaglerly await on Saturday nights. Just wished we get more of Makina though:)

Wonderful. Just wonderful. It's my thing Saturday nights/Sunday mornings, when I'm not otherwise occupied. But I can record it anyway, so it's all good. I should probably go back and start from the beginning, but I like this Crow guy.

@Sonata: how is shiki? it's on my list?

@Tiferet: crow is f@#king awesome.

@Elfenlied1012:

These are my choices.

Most of these came from Tech TV's Anime Unleashed. I remember they were good dub, but that was back when I was a middle schooler (11 years ago).

@Sonata:

I prefer more Minatsuki. :)

@Tiferet:

Crow is a cool guy. He and Owl are my only favorite male characters who aren't cowards like Ganta.

@takashichea: picks are interesting but you got to remember toonami's thing is action and entry level anime, so chobits just does not fit with that motif

@Elfenlied1012:

Oh, I was going for something random because Toonami aired Hamtaro back then. I need to think up some anime series for space besides Outlaw Star. Outlaw Star is a great anime.

Even though I haven't tried Black Lagoon, that show seems to fit Toonami.

Post by Elfenlied1012 (557 posts) See mini bio Level 15

@takashichea: From what I hear about Black Lagoon its a perfect fit. well thats when they were clawing at any acquisition they could get and before they were aiming for a teen-adult audience

@Elfenlied1012: Well of course he is. He wears an eyepatch. In anime, eyepatch = I'm gonna fuck shit up and be awesome.

@takashichea
Crow probably takes the cake in my book. There's also Hummingbird(that girl's just too funny for me) and the uber monk (he plays a guitar, so he automatically gets a pass, plus he's funny), but I don't think I actually hate anyone, except that crazy dude who betrayed them.
Post by Elfenlied1012 (557 posts) See mini bio Level 15

@Tiferet: uber monk makes me mad every time I have to see him on screen I dont know why

Jason Douglas did a good job in acting Uber Monk. I haven't read the manga past the anime yet to see the full story behind Owl and Uber Monk's pasts.

@Elfenlied1012: Ah what? I can't help but laugh at the guy! Even when he does bad things. I was really upset when he got his guitar broken. Guitars are expensive.

Deadman Wonderland 12 -
Deadman Wonderland 12 -

Toonami did a great job of airing it, just like most say the cursing is much, but in my own opinion; I know I am only speaking hypothetically. In a real world experience there would also be a lot of it. For those that are not within' the limit of understanding the profanity that may be used in the show shouldn't be watching it if it bothers them. Look at Dragon Ball Z originally it has cursing and nudity, but it was edited out once it hit television, but you can also catch a few that were missed. Point being, it is an awesome show and they are doing great with it right now. I'll continue to follow if you keep giving good topics like this appreciate it. Almost forgot, as for the dubs Hummingbird was not so....for that character but when she used her branch of sin now that dub was excellent, Ganta and the rest of the characters dubs are good so far, but I will post more after a few more episodes. Once again thanks for the great topics takashichea.

@LordDeadMan:

Thanks for heart warming comment. It's all for starting up discussion in this community.

Yeah, I guess the bleeps sound so foreign to me. I liked Minatsuki and Shiro. Both of them have a dark side to them that makes them interesting.

Welcome to Anime Vice! I hope you enjoy your stay. I'll try to start up the rest of new summer anime discussion threads. I'm a bit behind.

If you have questions, please ask my teammates or myself.

I want to see more of Deadman wonderland like a second season that follows the rest of the chapters.
