Afraid for his life, Ganta discovers that he is a "Deadman", a person who can manipulate their own blood as a form of attack. @Sonata

Colleen doing Makina's voice should be natural for her since she did another strict yet cool military lady, Riza Hawkeye. Though, she won't be sweet like Riza. I love her role for Riza Hawkeye which reminds me to finish her story arcs this week for the community spotlight. FoxxFireArt helped me improve Riza's page from a blank slate to a beautiful wiki page.

Micah Solusod does the voice of Soul in Soul Eater. It's too bad he is doing a character who dies in the first episode. I hope he does more.

Questions

  • I wonder who will sing Shiro's woodpecker song?
  • Is Monica Rial's voice going to be high pitch and cute?
  • In the Japanese version, Romi Paku who voiced Ganta also did Edward Elric in Fullmetal Alchemist. I wonder how would Vic Mignogna fit Ganta's persona?

FUNi has been on a roll with using the first 4 VAs listed (and that isn't exactly a good thing). Being oversaturated by certain VAs can be bad, especially when they use the same voice they've done for every character they have ever done despite each character being quite different.

As you can tell, dubs have been on my nerves recently. But what bothers me so much more is Deadman came out last year and FUNi is still sitting on series from a few years ago with no announcements on what will be done. I need to call FUNi up since there seems to be no answer anywhere.

For the series itself, though, I was disappointed. I haven't read the manga yet but a buddy loves the manga and was upset with the anime. Ganta really reminds me of Shinji and I really dislike such characters. I'm not sure how to pinpoint what I would have liked to of seen in the series but I feel it just could have been better.

Oh, I see your point with the dub voices. Besides the voices, I'm disappointed with the anime because it got cut short. Plus, they forgot to include Azami Mido. I want to restart the whole anime series from scratch to include her because she's really important in the story.

Being a Deadman Wonderland fan who has never watched the anime but read the manga, what do you think about the dub cast?

Greg Aryes is one of those voice actors who knows how to make things works. Honestly surprised they didn't get Johnny Yong Bosch for it. Monica and Colleen would probably work as would Aaron.

Although I will go ahead and say this for the record: I am not looking forward to Toonami if Deadman Wonderland is on the schedule. I don't even want to be called a fan. DMWL is a series that after you leave it, you don't want to go back to it (kind of like me and Elfen Lied or Hellstar Remina). The series is at times pointlessly cruel, I honestly feel bad for Ganta as he didn't deserve anything nor did anything ever turn out good for him, as well as the antagonists make me angry (as a teacher, I honestly hate it when adults abuse kids; even in anime, it rubs me the wrong way).

I know you didn't ask for me to go on a diatribe but this has been on my mind since I saw the listing the other day. I'm going to sum up my feelings of Deadman Wonderland by paraphrasing an anecdote Yahtzee Croshaw said the other day: I can compare Deadman Wonderland to eating a super-sized bag of Skittles. When you dig into it, it's sweet and amazing. But once you're finished, you'll get a sour taste in your mouth you can't get rid of.

@Wales:

I'm the same with not going back to Deadman Wonderland and also when I watched and read Seikon no Qwaser for the first time. I stopped reading Seikon no Qwaser up to Teresa Beria's origin story. For Deadman Wonderland, I probably watch the dub anime once. That's it.

Sorry for calling you a fan. I should have rephrased that question. I was just curious on your opinions on the dub cast. Thanks for your comment.

You don't have to apologize. It's not as if you slandered my family name and now we must duel with a children's card game. It was more of an "answering the question turns into a rant" sort of issue where it starts out simple enough then devolves into a somewhat related subtopic.

Here's a clip on Youtube.

If it doesn't work or got removed, here is the original link on adultswim.com

I think Ganta's voice is too girly.

Edit: Back up Video

You can never be too safe.

Yeah, I change my opinion on Greg Aryes. If anything, he should sounds somewhat akin to Renton Thurston. Hell, Vic Mignogna would have done a better job.

@sotyfan16: Yeah I think they were trying to go for the whole Shinji, boy forced to do crazy things character development, but they failed. The events and story moved too quickly, and went for too many cliches to make that character development work. Also Ganta's japanese voice actor sucked and showed almost no range of emotion. But I really can't blame him because the animators also did a crappy job animating Ganta. Seriously, half the times where he was supposed to be crying it looked like goo was coming out of his face.

@takashichea: Lol wow he does sound like a girl.. with a cold. I guess it can't get any worse? Right? *worried*

Hi everyone. I could not find a video or a written list of Shiro's song in the Funimation dub. I don't remember the exact lyrics, but the Funimation's version lost all of its cryptic message about Shiro's alter ego "Forest God" and Ganta's Woodpecker allusions. I recall there was no mention of the forest god. I could be wrong since it was so late last night.

Shiro's Japanese Woodpecker Song Translation

One mischievous little woodpecker... Another day, poking your holes, ruining the woods, tree wrecker. The angrey old forest god´╗┐ turned your poor beak into a poisen knife. Poor little woodpecker, your nesting holes are all tainted... Your food, with toxins rife. Touch your friends, and they well die, falling at your feet. Oh, sad little woodpecker. Poisonous tears, shining brightly, as they stream down your cheeks.

@takashichea: Please no more english Ganta!

Makina seems to have an okay voice.

Damn, now I'm interested. I want to know how the other characters turned out. I really want to see what they made Nagi sound like. His voice actor in japanese did a great job, and it would be pretty hard to give the same sort of performance in english.

@AURON570:

Sorry, I just can't stand the guy's voice while everyone on twitter doesn't mind his voice. They're crazy.

How do you feel about Shiro's voice? I find it's okay, but the Woodpecker song is ruined by the translation and her voice. It's not innocent enough yet eerie.

Edit:

Shiro is fine when she talks, but she doesn't need to sing. Someone else should do the singing.

I hope they bring a good voice for Nagi. He and Crow are my favorite male characters.

It's funny you say that. From what I heard from a friend, the Japanese version cut and censored a lot of stuff. I'm honestly not too surprised about the Lullaby (which is the proper name for it since its the thing that helps keep Red Man in control) being messed around seeing that they added in things they didn't need to as well as from the looks of it, they excluded Azami Mido from the season; a fact I was unaware of until you pointed it out.

And while we're on the subject, I didn't watch the whole episode since a) I really didn't care b) I read the manga so going through a cut/incorrect anime doesn't help either (i.e. first series of FMA) and c) Yeah, Greg Ayres is too high pitched. Mind you, Ganta Igarashi is near identical to Renton Thurston (serious, look at them and tell me you don't see it) and in my opinion, they should have got Johnny Yong Bosch on it since I think he would have been a good fit. That or Vic Mignogna. I didn't hear Monica Rial do Shiro but I've seen Monica's work in the past and met her in person (I witnessed her and Travis Willingham have a drinking contest at AWA one year while Travis and I had a taller-off) so I'd give it some time.

@takashichea: I can't watch the dub because I live in Canada. So no Toonami for me and I don't know what Shiro sounds like. But I can imagine how strange the Woodpecker song sounds in english.

@AURON570:

I will find you a clip on Youtube.

Edit:

Sorry, I didn't know that. Damn, it's hard to find Shiro's lullaby in dub. I will find it for you.
